Cold, blustery, and relatively busy loop with John and Meia. We managed to get separation from the crowds on the north side, where the views were great as always. But the sun on the south was a welcome change!

Started after lunch, so pretty much full sun this time around. Seemed like a normal amount of people out; I expected more being the day after Thanksgiving. After doing this weekly for the last month, I'm going to have to start stepping up the pace to make it a better workout.

Arrived at the Meridian Trailhead a just shy of 6 a.m. Dark with only one other car there. Brought my headlamp, but mostly preferred to hike without it. Enjoyed the hooting of owls and yipping of coyotes.

Headed out on the Pass Mountain Loop counterclockwise. At the saddle, decided to climb up to the point to see the sunrise. Then decided to improve the view by gaining the neighboring highpoint to the east. Then, before I knew it, I was committed to completing the Peak 3004 ridgeline. Turned out to be more up and down than I recalled from hiking around it in the past. Great views, including a nice "window" on the east side of the ridgeline.

Returned on the Bulldog Saddle Trail.

Saw a tarantula, but he crawled into his burrow before I could get a photo.

Beautiful sunrise and beautiful morning.

Decided to try a short hike I could finish before things heated up by midday. Left from Meridian trailhead and headed up to Bulldog Saddle, passed one other hiker going the same way. On arriving to the saddle decided to head up to peak 3125, on the way up kept thinking this is not gonna be fun going down , it wasn’t. Steep, loose rocks and plenty of cholla , one section of about 15 to 20 feet had cholla carpeting requiring careful foot placement, pleased to only collect two jumpers along here. Of course a bee had to start buzzing around my head and ears thankfully didn’t bring any friends. Must have finally decided the stinky red flower was no good. I had forgotten I was wearing a red bandanna :D .Good views from 3125 but not sure I’ll do a repeat.Back at the saddle continued on the the loop over to connect to Pass Mountain Trail. Passed by and chatted with a nice couple from Green Bay visiting since a week ago. Uneventful trip back to the lot after a snack break at the saddle. It was warming up by time I returned .

Sunny day. Started a little after 3:30. Other than the initial climb up to the Bulldog saddle (East side of 3004), was in shade the entire hike.

On the Northside of the peak, the official track for this hike deviates quite a bit from the trail. I don't think the trail existed when the official track was created.

Views into the lower salt river and on are a real highlight, as are the views up to the ridge to the east (3125, hippy hill, etc.)

On the trail around 8 and welcomed with a nice breeze and light traffic. Didn’t even see anyone on the North side. Had Meia off leash and she stayed right behind me the whole time. Great workout for us both!

Pass Mountain loop from Meridian TH, adding peak 3004 loop and tacking on an up-and-down to the Wind Cave. With an early start, we managed to hike much of the trail on the west-face shade of the morning. Add to that a gentle breeze, and the hike was quite pleasant for late August.

Quite a few folks on the Wind Cave Trail, but fairly light on the loop. For the first time in several hikes, didn’t cross paths with any snakes.

I had not been to the Meridian TH at the north end of Meridian Rd in almost a year, so I decided this would be good little exercise hike to do in hot weather.

This was a hike that was a combination of two loop hikes: The Peak 3004 Loop and the Pass Mountain Loop.

From the TH, we went north on the Bulldog Saddle Trail up to Bulldog Saddle, between the Peak 3004 Ridgeline and the Peak 3108 Ridgeline. Then we took the good use trail down into the valley north of Peak 3004, and looped around back up to Pass Mountain Saddle. Once at the Pass Mountain Saddle, we took the Pass Mountain Trail and did a CCW loop around Pass Mountain. Once at the Pass Mountain TH, we continued on the Pass Mountain Loop Trail, and then about 1/4 mile from the TH we took a use trail into and out of ravine and continued on to the TH.

The view of 4 Peaks was crystal clear today...a week ago you would not have been able to see 4 Peaks at all for all of the smoke.

On the way up to Bulldog Saddle we saw a couple of deer who were not camera shy at all.

Quick morning hike with Bill. Good to get on my feet this late in the year. Pretty dry but nice shade on the way up.

Driving out on Bush Highway my throat was already raw before I reached Granite Reef picnic area so I made a quick u-turn and headed out for AJ, surely I can find something over that way, and the Goldfields should provide a nice barrier to the smoke.

I began at the Meridian TH and headed for to the saddle east of Peak 3004. At the saddle with a pretty good view of the extent of the Bush Fire I could tell this was going to a long-burning and wide-spread fire. I decided I'm here, I might as well complete the loop, which seems to take a wider jaunt to the north than I recall, but then it was 7-8 years ago when I last hiked it.

Took the shortcut down a minor drainage into the wash, following it most of the way back. Warmed quickly but humidity already in single-digits and brisk breeze I felt nice and cool.

Early am start led to late morning finish so temps never felt uncomfortably warm, started counterclockwise from the Meridian road trailhead to get the climbs out of the way while still cool. Only saw 3 hikers heading down toward the parking area on the way up and 3 more met on the portion of the loop all the way to the viewpoint of Fountain Hills, also passed by 2 runners and 2 bikes on this stretch. There was a ruckus at the Wind Cave TH, parking area was lit up like Christmas with several law enforcement plus fire and rescue vehicles, 5-0 was discouraging use of Wind Cave Trail , was not planning on adding it today anyway. By time I was into my loop extension past Cat’s Peak I could see a helicopter and then another hovering near the ridgeline above Wind Cave Trail. Not sure what happened but the level of response would suggest something bad, hope all are ok. No wildlife except rabbits and lizards were seen ,none of Gummo’s pets were seen slithering along the Meridian washes , so will post a couple of distant helicopter photos instead. Vegetation and wild flowers are drying out as cactus flowers are taking their turn.

Rare Thursday afternoon hike for me. Arrived at the trailhead about 4pm... I would have been there sooner, but I was way into a podcast in the car and only realized I'd overshot my exit when I saw a sign for Idaho Road.

Meridian trailhead was packed, but I only saw four people total on this loop. People must be taking the "back way" into Usery Park.

Around the north side of Peak 3004 I passed through an area of pure owl clover. It must have been grand in its prime.

I think this was the latest I've been on these trails and they never disappoint. Golden Hour out here is exceptional.

Had plans with a friend to hike Peak 3125. I've been dealing with a sinus infection all week, so I knew the 3004 loop could be a backup option if I didn't feel like continuing up to the peak. And I didn't. Getting out for a stroll in the desert was good for my lungs though.

Extremely windy day, lots of people out. Superstitions looked pretty cool in the haze and the overcast lighting. Maybe my memory is fuzzy, but the trail on the north side of peak 3004 is a lot more defined than 9 years ago.

Wanted a close by hike with no route finding needed or vegetation obstacles, this one filled the bill nicely. Started from Meridian Trailhead and headed out past the Meridian Mystery Trail toward the saddle to complete the 3004 loop first. It was sunny and a little breezy at the start but soon a dark gray sky blanket came along with a cool breeze and distant views became hazy. Passed a couple of hikers coming back down from the saddle and on the other side 3 more coming down from Pass Mountain trail. Back on PMT still only a few other hikers until the Windcave trailhead , a full lot there, only a couple of bikes today. Decided to take a break near the Maricopa Trail junction , went uphill from there toward the route for the ridgeline hike. This area can be good for wildflower viewing maybe in a couple of weeks and contains obvious remnants of prior target range use. Went up to a highpoint there ,which route scout indicated as 2525, by the way also a top hit about the time of the first lunar landing, had a snack break there. Surprised not to see the fountain display in Fountain Hills despite it being on the hour, had to settle for the entertainment of automatic weapons fire from the Usery range. Proceeding on I noticed more Chuparosa along this west facing stretch. As far as trail tread my favorite stretch is from the Wind Cave Trailhead to the Pass Mountain trailhead, least favorite from Pass Mountain trailhead to Meridian trailhead. Taking another break at the Pass Mountain trailhead , sat at one of the picnic tables and from there decided to bypass PMT ,take a mileage penalty and to go back via Blevins and Meridian Trail, even though it required 1/2 mile road walk. Enjoyable day , changing direction of travel or adding variations can refresh a familiar hike.

Nice and cool cloud covered day , enjoyed the solitude on this loop not easy to find now with school being out. Took a look up 3125 , not a fan of the scree on the descent. No bikes until on pass mountain trail on the way back, did see a group of 3 hikers pass the Bulldog saddle as I was slowly descending 3125. Need to figure out a way to combo this with a bigger loop.

This and the ridgeline hike are my favorites in this area. I like the fact that you get two good view points since it has two saddles in the hike. The main downside of this hike is that the trail is almost entirely rocky with various size boulders.

This hike appears to be gaining in popularity also, ran across about 10 folks even though we started at 6:45am and finished about 9:15am.
