This is the last of my alpine lakes, after a brief interruption for big hills. It was meant as an overnighter, but a front was moving in from the west and was more successful in cresting the range than I hoped. The hike in was cloudy and cool, through thick woods. Elk were bugling all the way, but nobody else was around to hear them.

The sun broke through as I reached the treeline, giving hope for a pleasant afternoon. Some of the lakes were dry, but the big one rippled blue in the wind. A coyote fled from the shore as I approached. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that the sun was shining in from above the rain clouds, which suddenly burst like a black curtain over the lip of the cirque, pelting me with rain and hail. Being so exposed, I decided to hike right back out at almost a run.

I felt much safer once I was well down into the trees, and the rain let up a bit now and then. I toyed with the idea of camping at the TH, but it was cold and I decided to go back Salida and embark on new wanderings. I'm glad I did, because it ended up raining for almost two days.
