A nice, easy run through the lower section of Usery with lots of wildlife activity. I saw a desert tortoise on Blevins, a diamondback on Spillway and two javelinas just outside the park along Crimson Road.

Last minute decision to go here today, started at Meridian TH, before starting the loop took the short hop down Meridian road to begin on Meridian trail then Blevins , Vista, and Merkle trails finally joining the loop at pass mountain TH ,also added a short trip up toward the ridgeline at the Maricopa Trail junction . Poppies, lupine still blooming but drying out, may last a couple of more weeks, hedgehogs coming out now with there beautiful magenta colored flower. Saw a Gila monster in thick vegetation, no reasonable photo possible. Nice new restroom at the Pass Mountain Trailhead no more port a potties, would suggest a good workout by parking here and hike up to the wind cave via windcave trail and return on the gentle downhill slope on this portion of the loop trail , avoids the crowded small wind cave lot, adds about a mile to the wind cave hike. Cloud cover and breeze kept it cool until midday, trails were populated also until then , only saw 1 hiker on the way down from the saddle to the trailhead. Weekdays are nice as only came across 2 mountain bikers and that was on Blevins.

I planned a family hike for this Sunday, but my wife was kind of sick, so I took the kids out in the Sunday morning drizzle. A bribe of MOD Pizza for lunch afterwards was enough to quell any complaints. Dmitri was still tired for the first mile and a half, but after that he started talking and was in a better mood. We started off with rain gear, but after about 3 miles we shed all of it. The rain began to pick up the last mile, but not enough that we really got wet at all.

From the trailhead/staging area we took the southern part of the Pass Mt. trail out to the Meridian TH. I found a couple other trails there that head to the north. the one trail that's closer to the deep wash also heads south and appears to parallel the Pass Mt. Trail for a little while.

After that, we headed back on the Pass Mt. Trail, then did a 3 mile loop of the Cat Peaks/Blevins/Spillway/Levee/Noso Trails. Actually saw quite a few other hikers while we were out. We made much better time on the Usery Park trails than on the Pass Mt. Trail with less rocks to walk over and around.

The low hanging clouds over Pass Mt. made for some interesting and unusual scenery than what we normally see here. Trails were pretty muddy with lot of puddles. Nice to get out in the weather for the morning.

I had originally planned this as a family hike, but my wife had to attend a rehearsal and my daughter had a Saturday night sleepover at her friend's house, so it ended up as another father and son hike. The Chainfruit Trail is another very new trail in Usery Park that wasn't there last October when were there last. This was a great excuse to go hike so close to home.

We started at the parking lot at the southwest corner of the Blevins Drive loop, and took the Blevins Trail to the southern terminus of the Chainfruit Trail. Heading NW along the Chainfruit, we hiked the two spur trails out to the campground areas. The second spur takes you to an RV campground, which has a half mile interpretive Nature Trail. You have to walk about 100 yards along the asphalt to get to it from the spur trail, but we didn't mind. The RV grounds were full of snowbirds. All the plates were out of state. The Nature Trail was interesting. There were 18 different plants labeled, which I took note of. they even had a Christmas cholla.

After we completed the Chainfruit Trail, we took the Lost Sheep Trail south to the Moonrock Trail, and did the spur trail that heads into the subdivision to the west. After getting back on the Moonrock, we took it around back to the Blevins again, then headed east and took the Amigos Wash Trail north, and headed back to the car on the Blevins. Totaled out at just over 7 miles, very respectable for Dmitri, who was able to keep up with no difficulties (and minimal complaints, other than the chilly weather early on).

In the Amigos Wash Trail we heard sirens from emergency vehicles driving by the park. that usually sets off the coyotes that are nearer than you would think, but we didn't hear any.

Saw about as many hikers as bikers. Finished by 11:30am and headed out for lunch. The weather was clear and very nice, but I still didn't take many pictures. Nothing to see that we hadn't seen before.

We started at the Buckhorn Campground, rode down to the Chain Fruit Trail (not yet in trail guide as the trail is only a month old), headed northwest toward the Lost Sheep Trail. We rode north on the Lost Sheep Trail out to the Nature Center and then back to the junction with Chain Fruit. We continued down Lost Sheep until we ran into Moon Rock Trail. We continued south on Moon Rock Trail until the trail turned around toward Blevins Trail. We headed north on Blevins Trail until it met back up with Chain Fruit. Returning on Chain Fruit, I took the wrong campground trail and ended up at the group campground. We turned around back to Chain Fruit, continuing until we reached the correct campground trail back to Buckhorn Campground.

Lost Sheep is a fun downhill trail from the Nature Center to Moon Rock. Moon Rock has turns with rocks that were more than my limited skill could handle without slowing down quite a bit. Blevins Trail was very sandy and a workout climbing back up to Chain Fruit in that sand. Chain Fruit is nicely packed. It was a pleasant climb with slight rolling dips along the way.

Started at Area 10 and headed out west on Blevins Trail to Chain Fruit. Off Chain Fruit, we took the spur out and back to the Buckhorn Campground. Back at Chain Fruit, we continued north toward Lost Sheep Trail. We headed north on Lost Sheep toward the Nature Center. We interrupted a family photo shoot on the trail just outside the Nature Center. We turned back around and took Lost Sheep down to Moon Rock Trail. On Moon Rock, we headed east toward Blevins Trail. At Blevins, we headed north back to Area 10. Nice bike ride and first time on Chain Fruit, Lost Sheep, and Moon Rock.

With the weather getting a little bit cooler and a Sunday night Steeler kickoff, this was the perfect chance to take the family out for a local hike. We haven't been out for a hike as a family since April. I saw Cannondale Kid's description for the new Lost Sheep Trail at Usery Park and that seemed like the best bet.

We started along the Blevins Trail and headed over to the Moon Rock Trail on our way to the Lost Sheep Trail and up to the Visitor Center. Up there, we hiked the Desert Hawk Loop, which is no longer a proper loop. One section of it has been closed for some reason. We hiked the entire open section, basically doing two out and backs to the closed section on either side.

After that we hiked back to the Moon Rock Trail, and hiked all of that back to the Blevins Trail and back to the car. The clouds began to roll in after an hour or so which helped to keep the temperature cool. Nice to get out with the family again for a hike.

I didn't know about this little trail. I read Cannondale's write up and thought I would check it out. Walking up to the visitor center the trail is right of the building. Very nice trail. Although there is no sign at the north beginning, there is one at the south end where it connects with Moon Rock Trail. There is also a sign at the Desert Hawk Loop intersection. I hiked it south to Moon Rock and followed it to Blevins. Turned off on area 10 and walked the road for awhile. Then went into the group camping areas and found the Desert Hawk Loop and took it back to Lost Sheep and back to the car. Trail is in good shape for bike riders as well. The last years rains have put so much sand on Blevins in many area that the bike riders are probably not enjoying it nearly as much as before.
