This spring has provided a series of systems that have skirted north of Arizona, kicking up the wind and providing just a few sprinkles in the higher elevations. On Monday Snowbowl reported 7" new and it snowed all day yesterday so I figured a trip to the peaks would be ideal.

By this morning the total had notched 15" so I packed all my gear with plans to bag the Ag, but it became apparent that winds that often follow a storm here would make that an endeavor in stupidity.

Alas it was a beautiful day for riding and sliding below 11k, with none of the effort or reward of the high peaks.

Prime conditions on this beautiful Wednesday. Temps in the 20's and 30's, no wind and 41" of fresh dumped snow over the past week. Met up with Patrick and Jib in Phoenix around 5:30am and drove up north. Longer than expected lines due to spring break crowds.

Took advantage of a good late-season snowpack to bag Agassiz before the route melts out and the permitted oversnow travel becomes impossible again.

Microspikes were my method of traction today as the late morning snow was still hard packed and crispy. The ridge was bare, so I had to swing around and traverse up the more protected bowl side to maintain a snow-covered approach.

A couple of snowboarders beat me to the summit and headed down into the inner basin where they had stashed their mountain bikes for the shuttle back.

After a good break on the summit, I clicked into my bindings and began the absolutely delightful 1100-foot descent through the bowl, making sweeping turns in fantastically ideal spring conditions before reaching the groomed trail at the bottom of the catwalk. The rest of the day was spent making runs and enjoying the conditions on the peaks.

Previous two nights dropped total of 19 inches of snow. Needless to say, the powder was sweet. Runs felt creamy and smooth. We ran several routes from the Sunrise, Grand Canyon and Agassiz lifts.

There wasn't much confidence in the forecast models, but I decided that Tuesday would be good even if only a few inches of new snow fell. As things came together I decided I had to get up there Monday night to avoid a really slow and snowy drive Tuesday morning. Woke up to 16" in town and more on the hill.

One of the chair lift rides featured a guy who was calculating the odds: a once in ~ten years snowpack plus a once in ~five times per season storm of 20"+. The result was a pretty spectacular day. Low winds and light snow all day. Flagstaff closed school and NAU canceled morning classes. Even so there were no lift lines and fresh tracks even on the last run of the day.

I had contemplated hiking to Agassiz and skiing down the bowl, but all the new snow had closed access due to avalanche danger. Maybe next time.

I was camped in Hart Prairie and trying to decide what to do for my Sunday. Having camped two nights above 8000 feet I figured I was acclimated enough to attempt Humphreys. I estimated it would take me more than half an hour to drive to Snowbowl, so I decided to just start hiking from camp. Hart Prairie in the morning was peaceful and serene. I must have seen over 100 deer in several herds each counting in the dozens. :)

Eventually I hit the AZT, and then the Nature Loop, though I cut a few of those useless switchbacks. The parking lot was busy, but the trail wasn't, which was nice. The register had 96 entries from Saturday. Presumably that would mean more than 300 people had hiked this trail the day before :o I was only the 8th entry at that point Sunday.

I made great time up the mountain, getting from the trailhead to the summit in 2.5 hours. From the saddle to the summit and back I wore hat, gloves, and a windbreaker as there was a cool breeze. The clear skies of early morning had turned to ominous clouds and it snowed for a few minutes while I was on the summit. I absolutely love dramatic clouds. I had the peak to myself but didn't stay more than 10 minutes before heading back down.

On the return trip, I took the higher traverse to the Agassiz Lodge where I was startled to find a line of people at least 200 deep waiting to ride the scenic chairlift. :o

I followed the maintenance road that traverses the ski slopes to the maintenance yard and continued down the powerline road. From there I turned downhill on an old road cut until it met up with the Kachina Trail and then did a little off-trail exploring in some nice glades with plenty of aspen. My route brought me out at Aspen Corner which was in absolutely prime color, and apparently half the population of Flagstaff was there to enjoy it.

I skipped the actual road/trail down Aspen Corner/Polar Aspen Alley to avoid the people and just dropped straight down toward camp below Alfa Fia for a fantastic day. There are some beautiful areas south of Snowbowl on the east side of the road, but it's easy to get caught in the wrong drainage too. There are a bunch of mountain bike paths too. I'd like to explore some of this area and get routes on a map as I'm sure there are some pretty good loops to be made in the shade of these pines and aspens.

After the unfortunate circumstances at Veit Springs Loop, this was all of this trail that she was willing to muster.

I'm sure you've been there... No snow at all that I could see. I did see some glinty looking objects and wondered if they were the plane crash site.

Woke up in Sedona. No snow on the red rocks above town. :(

5" in Bellemont. 10" at Snowbowl. Snow on the webcam at NAU. So I drove uphill to go skiing.

Got to Snowbowl only to learn that the lift was on hold due to 90mph winds at the summit. :o

Drove over to Kendrick and started uphill. Only 3-4" there. Perfect temps and scattered flurries.

2 miles up, Snowbowl tweeted that they were opening the lift. Wind gusts were down in the 40s. I turned around and headed back down.

Snowed all day on the peaks. No ice, no spring slush. Deep stashes in the trees. As good an April day on the mountain as you could imagine. :y:

I've been itching to get this one taken care of, and the stars aligned with a huge, bright moon to make this one happen!

Warm weather has compacted all the snow, and the two recent days of cool weather froze everything up again, making for a pretty nice firm surface to move on, and a subsequently stable snowpack. I did posthole one time, and it was all the way! I had forgotten to swap on the snow baskets on my poles, which would have been helpful, as I was able to push the poles their full length below the snow.

Originally my plan was to hit Humphreys first, and I decided that after a month of no snow the trail should be broken and well-traveled. I skipped the bottom part and joined it on a switchback just below the top of the new Humphreys quad. There were a few places where the trail breakers went wrong, and it was a choice of repeating their mistake for the sake of broken trail, or breaking a new one on the correct route. Either way, everything always got back on track after a few hundred yards. Until I hit the bottom of the switchbacks to the saddle, and then it was a total loss. I just climbed straight up. Damn that is steep!

Great views of the inner basin, moonrise, Humphrey's and the ridge over to Aggasiz. I headed that way and enjoyed the relatively low grade to begin with, before making the final steep push to the summit, which was much shorter than I had mentally prepared for. I snapped some photos and began to head down toward the top of the chairlift. The weather was pleasant and nearly calm for most of the night. But the breeze picked up on the peak and ridges either side, maybe 10-15mph, but when it's only in the 20s, that's chilly.

Back below the treeline, calmness ensued, and I was treated to 2000 feet of absolute bliss on freshly cut corduroy illuminated only by the moon and reflection off the snow. :D

Found a couch to crash on for a couple hours and my breakfast included a surprise puke. Not too bad! ;)

Went skiing with Dave for the day. Had a great time and awesome weather. Legs did great all day considering I had not really skied in 15+ years but after a few runs it all came back. Strained my calf at the end of the day and it was a painful ride home but it was better after a nights sleep. I need to ski much more often.

We opted for a fun skiing weekend since Flag got pummeled with snow over the past week. We hiked up from the lower bowl where the lift ends to ski some fresh powder on the upper bowl. Man was that a workout!!!!! Holy crap! Kept post-holing through the deep snow, and it was exhausting carrying your skis over your shoulder and trying to hike up in ski boots! I was exhausted by the time we made that short distance! What a fun weekend! We got 2 full days on the slopes. They have a stay free package, so when you buy 2 adult tix, you get a hotel room for free! It's a no brainer!

I think I pissed off my hip flexor injury though. :(

Did 13 runs today. I hit a maximum speed of 35mph. My one fall cooled me off. :) Agassiz was only open to midway. The peaks need way more snow. Demo'd some Head Skis today. My cheapest day ever on the mountain $11 :y: .

The snow conditions weren't the greatest, but the small crowd size made up for the lack of pow pow. I enjoyed the wide open slopes with no one to get in my way. Ski down to the bottom and hop right back on a lift without any wait. Exhilerating fun...I love the speed.

Finally getting back out on some skis on the last day of the season after this lastest storm dumped 31" on the mountain. :y: Hit both the Agassiz & Sunset lifts a few times and stuck mostly to the Blues but hit a couple short Black sections in order to reach more Blues. :D

I drove up to Flagstaff after work Friday to spend the weekend. I met Mike and his friends for a late dinner. When we got to their house I left most of my stuff in the car, I just brought overnight stuff and sandals. It snowed 2 feet overnight and I had to de-snow my car to get my colder weather clothes and shoes. Mike had to dig it out so I could move it to save his snow free spot parking spot when we left. I guess this is typical operations for Flagstaff; lesson learned.
I haven't skied in over 10 years and even then I wasn't proficient at it. I secretly hoped that the roads would be closed due to the weather conditions, but that didn't happen. I decided to go with the flow and go enjoy the last weekend of Snowbowl. I had to borrow clothes and skis from Patty, but everything worked out just fine.
It was beautiful up on Agassiz and the snow kept falling. At fist I wanted someone to stay with me but then I realized it was easier to try to get the hang of it, if no one I knew was watching. I was a little frightened to find myself on a black diamond route because of how I had remembered them in the past. It wasn't a true BD, just a bit steeper than I preferred. The day was great, and on the last run I HAD to stop and get my pack camera out of my coat to try to capture an amazing sight. I think it captured about 10% of the view I saw!
