Claire and I decided to take advantage of the magnificent weather for a short jaunt close to home. After waiting for the bulk of the rain to stop we headed out to clearing skies and none of those magnificent waterfalls we knew the rest of the instaworld would be out futilely searching for. I thought it would be fun to wade down the river in Pima Wash but hate that trailhead, so I drew up a loop with Young Man and and Gabe.

After the Everest-esque climb to the ridge, we splashed through HV before heading down the wash. It was just at the start that for absolutely no reason at all I pulled a Hippy and assured myself a month on IR. I was surprised I was able to self-rescue, but knew that it wouldn't stay that way for long. So I asked Santa for bags of frozen peas and RICE. :pk:

Up San Gabriel Ridge, including the new section at the bottom. West on Guadalupe Ridge to a short distance past Fat Mans Pass. Easy off trail to connect down to National where I headed back east to Hidden Valley. Stayed in the wash from Hidden Valley down to the old buildings, then back up to San Gabriel Ridge to finish. Great temps and clear air. Not many people out. Guadalupe Ridge is definitely my favorite trail on SoMo, and the wash ranks right up there too.

Denny said that this morning’s weather would be ideal for three uphills. He even ordered some humidity to enhance the experience. We headed up San Gabriel at 0500, down to the start of National, then up National to Hidden Valley. Down Hidden Valley, then retraced our steps on National and San Gabriel. Some breeze on National, not much anywhere else. Saw Creepy Camera Guy near National—ugh. Heard a rattle along San Gabriel, and Denny channeled his inner Steve Irwin and headed into the rocks to find the source of the sound, but no luck. As always, great to hike with Denny, and fun conversation!

Linda let me join her for what must be our “50th” :y: time sharing the trail. Per usual I was complaining about a sore knee so she let me pick the route so it would be on me. 😳😁 Three ups but I figured better than a steep one for my knee. I did sweat out 4lbs though. 🥵 I always like it when we can be on trail for the sunrise! I like this route to Hidden Valley better than the Pima route. Nice to get a morning hike in with some good conversation and company! Thanks Linda, like Haz, you rock!

Added on Young Man's down and up to my usual route. Not nearly as many people out today. Parking lot only a quarter full when I finished. Unheard of. I guess the rangers, police, and nimby neighbors scared most folks off.

Added on Mormon Loop, Hidden Valley, and National to my normal route. A little water still running in Hidden Valley, even through the tunnel. Besides a few people near the tunnel, I had Hidden Valley to myself. :o Lots of mountain bikes on the National. Another excellent day to be hiking. :)

My son-in-law's college friend was visiting and he requested an AZ hike for entertainment. In the last few weeks we'd hit the Mormon-Hidden Valley loop twice so I wanted a change.

Hadn't noticed this one before but it was just right...didn't even know this trail up from Ahwatukee (not so far from my house) even existed! But it's a good one. Plenty of folks in Hidden Valley didn't detract from everyone enjoying being outside on a nice day.

Decided to check out a some trails I don't hike often. It's nice that I can still find one or two I haven't set foot on.

Young Man was a reasonably fun route to get up to the ridge. Devastator had two very steep sections, but the rest of it was really nice. A good option on the north side. I didn't think I'd hiked the south side of San Gabriel before, but apparently I went up it in 2011. Today was my first descent though! I like it.

There's another well-used route between Mormon and Devastator that I still need to check out too. But it's not on HAZ yet, so no unique!

Chumley wanted to see if I would walk uphill three times without complaining. Fat chance. Started on Desert Classic, and up Young Man (which I think is easier uphill than Old Man, just not as convenient for parking), which afforded some nice views of the Christmas lights in Equestrian. Dropped down into Hidden Valley, then up Hidden Valley to National at Fat Man's Pass. Went down Mormon, then took some neighborhood streets over to Devastator. Devastator was a nice addition, and it got straight to the point about reaching Mormon Loop. Down Mormon Loop, then up to the top of San Gabriel Ridge from the buildings at the end of the dirt road. Back down San Gabriel and to the cars. Good loop, I wouldn't do this one in the summer, but nice on a cool night.

Took San Gabriel Ridge to Guadalupe Ridge then followed it west until I could come down on top of Fat Man's Pass. Went through then east to the tunnel and through it. From there went under the bridge and took the wash all the way down to the rock house. Picked up the San Gabriel Ridge route from there and took it back to the car.

In anticipation of my pending penalty in the AEG deprivation chamber, I decided to grab a few feet while I can. I stopped a couple of times to set up a proper night exposure to share on the social mediums. Because if not for the likes from people I don't know and will never meet, really, what the hell are we doing any of this for!? :-k :-$

Left work a little early and got my feet on SoMo in the rain. Saw one couple on Guadalupe and one mountain biker. Otherwise empty trails. Watched a pack of coyotes on the prowl. Nice to be out in the drizzle. Felt good to take off wet clothes and get into a dry vehcile at the end.

Short workout hike this evening. Some of us had to sweat out some of the weekend's sins. That would be Dallin. Perfect hiking temps at night. Yet nobody else on the trails.

Some morning exercise to keep the momentum. Plenty of folks on San Gabriel, HV and Ridgeline. Had Guadalupe to myself. Traveled all the way West to National. East on National. Under the bridge and through the wash to the stone buildings. Ridgeline to Beverly and back onto Guadalupe. Sunny but pleasant a.m. on the hills. Still hazy to the East.
