I headed into California to run a couple errands. I left 5 hours earlier than I needed, so I could spend some time near the Salton See area. (The area has been on my list for a while.) After driving down Box Canyon Road nearing the Salton Sea, I decided to head toward Ladder Canyon. I didnt make it to the Sea. I ended up running the Ladder Canyon Loop in reverse. I did hike down a dead end trail, before descending down into Ladder Canyon. The dead end trail was marked with rocks telling you it was a dead end. I continued down this part of the trail ended, then headed back. Over all a very cool area. I am planning on coming back and exploring the Mecca Hills when I have more time.

Beautiful hike through a slot canyon with several ladders. We did it as a loop, coming back clockwise from the ridge above the slot canyon. Some of the most diverse and incredible rock formations anywhere. Well worth the fairly long dirt road coming in from Mecca on Painted Canyon Road. Pretty well marked and relatively easy, but the ladders could pose a problem for a few people. Expect several people, especially on weekends, until the temps rise. Best avoid the summer due to high temps.

Our aeg of 776 was a lot less than the official 1700+. I really don't see how it could be that high unless the lost signals caused elevation spikes. The radical spiking in the first 0.6 miles of the official track is just not there.

While heading home from Temecula, we decided to stop at the Mecca Hills for a quick visit to Ladder Canyon. As we made our way along the rocky dirt road admiring the fault lines and wild rock formations of earthquakes past, I glanced at the vehicle thermometer which was reading 98 degrees. I knew this would be a short trip, since mid-day was quickly approaching and the temps would only continue to climb.

On our way into Painted Canyon (the approach to Ladder Canyon), we walked in the shadows of the massive canyon walls. The dry heat is not bad in the shade. Once inside the slot, the temps are cooler. The ladders inside the canyon were in good shape..no broken rungs.

We explored up canyon until the walls opened up to exposed sunlight. By now it was over 100 degrees. We decided to turn around as it really doesn't get much more interesting beyond this point. At 70 degrees we may have continued on.

We walked back to the trailhead. If you are a rock hound, there is definitely a mix of colors to be found, thus the name Painted Canyon. Beautiful geology in this otherwise desolate land.

Very cool slot canyons. Had to take off my pack in order to squeeze through certain areas that were about 1 foot wide. I ascended through little painted canyon. Some ropes are already in place for 2 climbs (12 - 20 feet each). In one area I had to crawl underneath a large boulder wedged between the canyon walls. Exited this canyon to the right and traveled down well marked trail until arriving at clearly marked trail to the right. Descended into Ladder Canyon. As name implies, someone put ladders in areas where a downclimb is required. Aluminum ladders in good condition. Have to climb around a rock slide blocking the trail and then back into the Painted Canyon. Another 1/4 mile and the loop is complete.
