I was in the Great Basin National Park with the intention of hiking up to Wheeler Peak. The day before the hike I drove to the park to check out the trailhead; however, to my dismay the road to the TH was closed due to a paving project that week.

Instead of hiking from the Wheeler Peak TH, I went up the Lehman Creek Trail, which starts at the Upper Lehman Campground. Once I got up to the Wheeler Peak CG I continued on some campground roads and then the Bristlecone-Glacier Trail and the Alpine Lakes Loop Trail until I got to the Wheeler Peak Trail. I continued on the Wheeler Peak Trail up to about 11,000 feet; by that time it was 11:00 AM and there were some dark clouds forming overhead. The forecast was for a decent chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon, so I decided to abort the climb to Wheeler Peak and instead reversed course and went back to the TH. On the way back I stopped off at Stella Lake, which was an enjoyable diversion.

It was a bummer not to have hiked up to Wheeler, but I will get back up there again sometime. I liked the area, and the Lehman Creek Trail was an enjoyable hike.

We had some fresh powder in Eastern Nevada yesterday and so decided to go over to Great Basin National Park to do some snowshoeing. The park actually loans out snow shoes for FREE, a great, but little known service. The road to the trailhead is closed, which adds a bit to the start of the journey. We figured to do about 4.5-5 miles. I had never experienced the park like this, really a winter wonderland with the fresh snow.

Great afternoon hike. Only saw one other person on the trail today. Sleep in, and then go hiking, thats the best of both worlds right there.

Upper Lehman to Wheeler Peak Campground and back. Beautiful hike, didn't run into anyone else. Still some snow once you get up over 9000 feet but not enough so that I couldn't follow the trail.
