Went out to the White Tanks to renew my annual pass and to ride with my buds, Carey and Dan. Rode the competitive loop and technical segment then continued on another loop around Ford, Mesquite, etc. Great afternoon for a ride!

Despite the weather did a short run in the White Tanks after work. Got to the TH around 4pm with dark clouds looming. Did a clockwise loop. Starting on the Mesquite to the Waddell, briefly on the Ford to connect to the Ironwood and then back on the Ford to get back to the TH to close the loop. Despite all the rain trails were in good shape. Puddles were abundant, but they were easy to get around. Trails were at worst soft in places. Once again, I got lucky with the rain; the clouds loomed, but never released. One of my favorite loops to run....very low intensity. Weather and its effect today was incredible!!! When the sunlight shined on the Bradshaws and the McDowells. WOW :y: . No snow evident on the slopes of the White Tanks, but it seemed anything with elevation to the north or east was a "white wonderland." Beautiful!

Every time I head out to the White Tanks for a mountain bike ride I always end up riding the competitive loop. Today I decided to explore some of the other trails the White Tanks have to offer. I parked at the trailhead for South trail. I followed the following trails in a clockwise direction: South, Goat Camp, Bajada, Mule Deer, Mesquite, Waddell, For Canyon, Ironwood, and returned to my truck all the way back on Mule Deer. I encountered a fair number of hikers and bikers under the overcast skies this morning. Most were super happy to see me. I know I was super happy to see them, even the ones that didn't return the super happiness. South trail and Goat Camp were a little bumpy. The rest were smooth and well groomed. Signs at all the trail intersections. Nice relaxing ride. Almost thought I was going to get rained on.

Went out to the White Tanks to hike a few sections of trails I haven't done yet. Kept it to the flat trails with the heat being a factor these days. The weather was actually much better than last Saturday, much less humid. It was actually pretty cool early on with some light cloud cover, but later the heat started to kick in. Went through a lot of water, well over 150 oz.

I started from the end of Goat Camp Trail, then took the Bajada and Mule Deer Trails northbound to the Grey Fox Trail and headed back. Saw some bikers and trail runners early on, but by the time I was done at 11am, most everyone was already gone for the day. The burn area there from a few months ago already looks better. Still no vegetation obviously, but less black and charred.

Went back to White Tanks to do the hike I planned last week that got put on hold from the fire. I hiked the lower trails, with the main goal to finish all the Mule Deer Trail since it's part of the MT.

I started down at Parking Area 1 and hike the southernmost portion of the Mule Deer Trail, eventually heading north. I hiked the little spur over towards the Nature Center, since that's also a designated part of the MT. As I hiked over the high point of the Mule Deer Trail, that's where the wildfire was. Mostly just scorched earth, not as much brush as there was before. On the way up the hill, 4 or 5 mountain bikers flew down the hill past me without the slightest thought of yielding the trail. All other hikers and bikers I encountered the rest of the morning were decent human beings.

At the staging area, I headed north on the Ford Canyon Trail, then took a right turn and hiked all of the Ironwood Trail, then headed south on the Waddell Trail. After the Waddell, I took a right turn onto the Mesquite Canyon Trail back to staging area.

Hiked over the hill on the Mule Deer again, and took the Bajada over to Goat Camp. Along the Bajada is where I saw the saguaro with a hole in it that obviously has a bees nest. The air rushing out of the whole made it sound like there was an AC unit inside the cactus. Managed to zoom inside the hole for a decent pic without putting myself at too much risk.

From the Goat Camp Trail, I turned left on the South Trail and back to the car. The temperature wasn't too hot. Got a little warm the last hour or so, but not unbearable. The early morning light cloud cover helped with that. Nice to get some higher mileage on actual trails again, even if the AEG was still a little lacking.

First time mountain biking at White Tanks. Started on the competitive track. Even at my novice level, it was mostly rideable. We finished that in short order and started on our next loop Gray Fox - Ironwood - Ford - Waddell - Ford - Ironwood - Gray Fox. Fantastically fun! I think I'll be getting a lot of use out of that Maricopa Parks annual pass this year.

Well I found this hike to be a learning experience. I have a better understanding of why children die in hot cars and drown in swimming pools. This is so sad and preventable. But hiking up to the falls today with Rowdy on his leash I notice small kids climbing up on the rocks that had signs saying no hiking and no climbing. What I didn't see is parents that really cared about their Childs safety.
There were signs posted everywhere even signs that warned about venomous animals inhabit areas with little kids playing in them alone.
Ok I am sorry as a dad and grandfather and great grandfather nothing to me is more important than family which includes Rowdy.
After I got passed all of that Rowdy and I enjoyed the rest of our hike.

Short after work run in the White Tanks. Started from the Mesauite TH and went clockwise on the Mesquite - Wadell - Ford - Ironwood - and Ford back to the TH. This is one of my favorite loops to run. Trails are smooth and fairly flat. Usually I can make decent time (for me). Pushed myself today and this is what I got :( . Felt gassed afterwards. Didn't see anyone on the trails, though one guy pulled in and parked next to me just as I was starting....never saw him on the trail. Think he and I had the park to ourselves. Never even saw another vehicle while I was out there.

Parked at Area 9 one of the Ford Canyon Trailheads. This was our third mini hike today with my friend who didn't want to hike "too many miles"

We headed out via Ford Cyn Trail then took a left onto Ironwood then followed it out to Gray Fox Trailhead, retraced our steps back up Gray Fox to Ironwood completing the Ironwood loop with Ford Cyn Trl.

This would be a really fun and easy mountain bike loop.
We saw Cali poppies all over. Such a perfect day for a little walk.

enjoyable hike in the white tanks with linda
this loop was plan b but turned out to be a good choice given weather conditions
haven't been out here in three years :o
waddell :next: ford canyon :next: willow canyon :next: mesquite
light rain for much of the hike, making the rocks in ford canyon a little slick
a few good pools of water in this section
a few mosquitos, too
chose willow canyon trail to check out the spring area
found a nasty pool with nothing flowing into it
finished the loop on mesquite
didn't quite hit double digits, so we drove over to hike a short loop that included ironwood trail as neither of us had done it
the sun was just starting to break out as we finished
good day for it if you don't mind a little rain
thanks for the idea and for driving, linda :)
nice to get back out that way

We wanted to get into double digits today, so after finishing our main hike, headed over to check out Ironwood trail. Made a quick loop of it with Ford Canyon from parking area #9. Ironwood should be named Cholla Trail--don't veer off the path! Flat trail, nothing too exciting, but nice to check off a newer trail.

Short after work hike. Actually did this as an info hike, trying to gather data for a short trail description. We'll see if that trail description comes to fruition. I'm about 50-50 on making them happen. Never seem to have enough time and/or worthwhile information. :( If nothing else it gets me out and allows me to walk and enjoy the beauty of the area. :) Not a soul in the park, including wildlife: didn't see a thing.

After yesterday's long hike needed something a little shorter. Went out to the White Tanks and did a short loop involving Mesquite-Waddell-Ford-iIronwood Trails. I had watched Mcfarlane USA, the night before so I was inspired to run this loop. I had done this loop before and it is a perfect trail for running. No elevation change and fairly smooth. While doing the loop I discovered a NEW TRAIL !!! :) It's called the Grey Fox and spurs off the Ironwood and heads off to the competitive tracks. I did not check it out this time, but its on the radar.

After work jog in the Estrella. Started off from the Waddell TH and went clockwise. Connected briefly to the Ford and then the Ironwood and then back on the Ford. This got me to the Mesquite TH. From there I took the Mesquite trail back to the Waddell TH. Didn't see a soul out there. Human or animal. Warm out there but no humidity.

Ran the XTerra White Tanks race again this year. Totally different strategy this time than last year, and much better effort up the hill(s), but exact same finish time (1:58)! How'd that happen? Oh well, great day, nice chilly cloud-covered conditions made the running easier. The relentless climb makes every muscle burn, but it is nice up high. Flew down the hill and started thinking about food and beer with about 2 miles to go on the flats...now if that doesn't motivate you, I don't know what will
