My first time canyoneering! As a long-time rock climber, scrambler, and puddle jumper, I'm not sure why I haven't tried this before. Tons of fun! We set up a car shuttle and took off from Gordon Hirabayashi. We took our time and set up a couple of rappels--one in the middle of a waterfall. We saw (and utilized) some existing webbing rappel anchors that were in usable condition.

Had planned to do 7 cataracts, but it was raging. Too much flow for a few newbies I had along. Super fun day with flowing water.

Organized a Cave Grotto trip down Soldier Canyon on a full moon. Caving and Canyoneering have a lot of similarities so it is nice to be able to have a larger group hangout! Normally cave trips are limited to 6 people. 12 members attended the hike. We did 3 rappers. There was a pool at the bottom of the first rappel which was surprising because it hadn’t rained in a while. Then on the second stage of the second rappel a dead tree was in the way. We used the sneak route out of the canyon back to the trail. We got all 12 of us through and back to the cars in less than 4 hrs!

First canyon after my shoulder replacement! Back into the business! Of course this is a super easy canyon when you use the sneak route :)

Joel's first canyon after the incident! Took a caver friend, a newbie, and a few experienced peeps. Had a great time. I find it interesting how quickly the webbing leaves this area. I believe we only found one piece of webbing and Joel had done this canyon about 5-6 months ago. The beauty of this area is that it is all natural anchors so you need to know a thing or two.

I did this hike two days after a big winter rain storm and the waterfalls were amazing. If you have enjoyed hiking the canyon when it is dry or with just a trickle, it is definitely worth going back to check it out after a rain.

Very windy in the canyon, it made for some of us wishing for sun. Nice time with only a few surprises. The two Gopher Snakes in the grass woke Joel up in a hurry.

There was water today after the Monday visit from the remnant of Himmicane Norbert.

Belinda had a longer palisades trip planned, but was out of commission. The rest of us decided to do something a little shorter - plus I had not done Soldier yet. The canyon was great with all the water from the previous storm. We either did 4 or 5 rappels. There were anchors in place at every rap, but I replaced everyone. They either had hollow rap rings or faded webbing.

Fun half day of canyoneering. Temp was pretty perfect.

Conned a friend into playing hooky with me since I've been off all week enjoying time between jobs. I wanted to do a recon mission of this canyon to see what it's like. I discovered a very beautiful canyon!

We met at Hairpin at 5 AM. We left one car there and then drove up to Prison Camp. The campground was closed which means we had a bit more walking to do...

We dropped into the canyon early to ensure we didn't miss much.

We ended up doing 5 rappels in which I used natural features to build all the anchors. A couple rappels we had to work really hard to avoid all the wasps that were around. On one rappel the rope got stuck in a crack so I had to use my microtraction and VT Prusik to get up high enough on the rope to fix the issue. We did pretty good with teamwork and learned a bit from each other.

I had a lunch date at 11:30 and I was only about 15 minutes late!

I led a hike for Alt Meetup from the Bear Canyon trailhead to the Soldier Canyon Trailhead. I had done all of the hike except Soldier Trail in the past. Bear Canyon had some waterflowing. Seven Falls was flowing but nothing impressive. When we got close to Thimble you could see snow on the North faces. The trek uphill from Sycamore Dam had some snow that we had to walk through. Soldier trail had recent trail maintenance done on it. I, however, will avoid going down Soldier Trail at all costs. I guess back in the day that they built the old dozer road to Prison Camp they had not heard of switchbacks. Overall good day. Tomorrow back to the airport...

From Nick's photoset, it was obvious this was a technical canyon and armed with two 100ft ropes & recent canyon beta from the ACA forums I descended this short & sweet canyon from the Prison Camp TH down to the Catalina highway down below. From the trailhead, we started briefly on the Soldier trail but left it after about a quarter mile and headed down the drainage towards some narrows. We hit that cool slickrock narrows sections that looked like it'd present some rappels but after a few tricky down climbs & jumps, we were able to make it thru them without having to break out the gear or get wet in the pools. :) Another easy slickrock section was encountered before the canyon flattened out and we had loads of rock hopping & bushwhacking. The trail crossed over the flat dry wash and we followed it briefly to take a break from bushwhacking but it soon crossed back over the wash and headed up the hillside just before another sweet narrows section. :y: We made our way into the chute at the beginning of the narrows and soon encountered a 20ft drop & some shredded webbing indicating the first rappel. We geared up, made a new anchor, rappelled down the chute, avoided a small pool at the bottom, and found another 15ft drop on the other side of a van-sized chockstone. The webbing appeared to have been washed out and was laying in the sand below, but instead of building another we decided to slide down the 15ft slope to the sandpit below. :o Another 20ft drop was below the sandpit, so I used the failed anchor to make an anchor for this next short yet awkward rappel. This was followed by a tricky down climb and then a living room sized chockstone with a 50ft rappel to get past it. This was definetly the most awkward rappel of the day since there was a 4ft long by 1ft wide crack to rappel past to get below the chockstone. I used a stiff leg-in-the-crack & lean back technique to prevent my body from sliding in and getting helpless wedged in there. ;) A little further down and we hit the big falls that stopped Nick on his trip and found a sturdy tree with webbing around it to make the final 70ft rappel down these sweet falls to the sandy bottom. There was still plenty of rock hopping & down climbing past a few more drops & small falls before reaching the highway and a popular small climbing wall known as Left Hand Wall. We dropped our gear while briefly watching the climbers before crossing the highway to our lower vehicle and driving back up to the Prison Camp TH. Yet another amazing short & sweet winter canyon in the lower Catalinas! :D

I needed a distraction in a bad, bad way today. Wow, did I get it. This canyon is just gorgeous in places, rugged in others and awesome always. Luckily I think I caught the tailend of the snowmelt, so there was some decent water flowing along. Hillsides were mostly yellow.

My dad and I just picked along until the canyon said "No more" and then we turned around. I studied the topo pretty closely so I though we would be able to make it to the wall and we did. Excellent, excellent canyon.
