I walked out of the Beeline Cafe after dark to discover a lightning storm rolling in from the east. Ooooh! Off I went, trying to find a dry place to hopefully capture some lightning photos. Just like old times! I drove out toward Cypress Thicket, stopping to watch a rattlesnake cross the road along the way.

Finding a good photo spot on the side of a hill, I saw a bolt hit North Peak as I set up my tripod. Three photos later, the storm had cleared the Mazatzals and was gone. I packed up and continued north to Kinder Crossing trailhead on the Rim to spend the night.

An exciting evening it was.

Leaving my well hidden campsite among the cypress trees just south of Table Mountain, I headed for Table Mountain itself. Wanting to explore the base of the little mountain, I made a counter-clockwise loop around the base of the cliff. I got torn up, poked, and filthy, but I had fun. And that's what counts. After the hike, I stopped into my old office in Payson to visit friends, then I began the long journey home. Six days of rafting, hiking, camping, and relaxing in some wonderful places made for a perfect and memorable Spring Break! :D

Today was a day for visiting old favorite places. Earlier in the day, I had roamed around a prehistoric artifact scatter location that I've visited many a time over the years. The day was almost over now, and, almost as an afterthought, I decided to go back to Table Mountain in my beloved Cypress Thicket. I parked at the base of Gold Hill on Forest Road 414/Cypress Thicket Road, and took a blocked spur road up to the mesa that led north to Table Mountain. I climbed the west slope over massive slabs of Tapeats Sandstone, and headed to the south edge of the mountain. I roamed the top, listening to my iPod and snapping photos, before descending at dusk. A night time walk in Mazatzal land with good music and a cool evening breeze: for me, nothing could have been sweeter! Back at my truck, I took a much needed bath in the frigid waters of Rye Creek, then drove off looking for a campsite. Irish folk songs and a green shirt seemed like an appropriate choice for Saint Patrick's Day. :GB:

Parked on FR 414 and walked up the gated spur road to FR 193. Went up onto Table Mtn and saw the ruin. On the return we did a loop staying on FR193 and went up Gold Hill. This has some sort of old trail or waterway along the west side.
