Chilly day at CSP, made the mistake of not taking gloves for the Tuesday Old Man Run. At the intersection of Oracle the temperature was 45 and by the time I parked my car a mile down the road it was barely 30. Even chillier when we dipped into the washes.

Snowbirds are back, so the trails even early in the morning are a bit busier.

I really like how Catalina State Park is cooler than the surrounding area in the summer, but now that winter is approaching not so much. Left my house and it was 56 degrees and by the time I got to the trailhead it was 39 degrees. Just a hair too brisk for my tastes.

Did the Tuesday morning old man running group to get back into the swing of things.

Tuesday morning old man group run. Next youngest guy this morning is 17 years older than me, I'm the "youth movement". Nice mellow social run up and down the trails.

An Easy, Kid-Friendly Trail

While recovering from a not-very-fun episode of heart trouble and a stay in the hospital, I've been on the lookout for short, easy walks to satisfy my Inner Hiker without putting myself back in the ER. So I took a look at a trail I had been briefly on a few years back: The Romero Ruins Interpretive Trail out at Catalina State Park.

This is a short little walk, only 3/4 of a mile long; it's been extensively groomed-- even the rise in height has been given nicely-built railroad-tie stairs-- and it takes you through some very pretty mesquite and desert oak woods up a gentle hill to the saguaro-crowned remains of a Ho'hokam village more than a thousand years old. Interpretive signs are all around, explaining the layout of the homes, fields and defensive wall; if you look carefully you'll see scattered shards of broken pottery everywhere as well. There are also the remains of a mid-1800s ranch, whose owner gave the site its name.

I was lucky enough to have just climbed to the village as a ranger-led tour arrived, and with permission I tagged along. The ranger, a tall, enthusiastic dark-haired man, was a good story-teller and quite fond of the mysteries of the locality; his audience was appreciative and the tour was both informative and entertaining.

If you have visitors staying with you or in the area, this would be an excellent place for both the young and/or the infirm or even those in excellent shape; the view from the top is beautiful and the walk's an easy one, just enough to give them a taste of history and a chance to take some really outstanding photos. Also, if you do get the chance to catch the park's own tour, I'd highly recommend it.

Desert Chicory, Scorpion Weed, Desert Lupins and Globe-mallow were all in early bloom; I was told that Mexican Poppies had also been sighted.

Arrived and set up our camp for the night at Catalina SP during sunset.
Then set out for a real nice leg stretcher under the full moon.
We walked the main park road to the visitor center then backtracked to the Romero Ruins trail.
Completed the short ruins lasso loop before returning back to camp for an early bed.

Decided to head over to Catalina State Park and hang out with the SAHC gang at their annual winter picnic in the group area. Hadn't been to one of these in about 9 years, so it was fun to visit with some folks I used to hike with and hadn't seen in a long time. :D Before doing that I checked out the short loop to the Romero Ruins site.

Quick walk with the dog, giving him a little exercise :). Not worth $7 entrance fee, but not bad on an annual pass :D

This was my first trip to the Catalinas, and officially, this is my first ever Tucson area hike. I did it as a warm-up for the Romero Canyon Pools hike.

There isn't much to see here in terms of history. These ruins have nothing on some of the ruins in northern Arizona. The most well-defined structure is the remains of Romero Ranch and I think the interpretive sign said even that was partially reconstructed.

However, this is a great area to do a little birding. In less than one mile I spotted a Gila Woodpecker, a male and female Cardinal, and countless Cactus Wrens. It also offers a little bit of solitude away from the more crowded trails in the park.

I started this hike just to "see" the ruins. I pass the sign for them every time I head to other trail heads. I parked in the far lot and walked back down the road to the trail head and then did the loop. It was windy today and it felt nice. After the ruin loop I walked back to the parking lot and picked up the nature trail which is a mile +/- that rises up about to a small mesa and offers some rather remarkable views of the Cargodera canyon and the Catalina's.
After doing the loop, I descended back to the trail heads and did the canyon loop in reverse including a slight detour to the Montrose pools. The water that was there two weeks ago is all but gone except for one small pool.
This park is usually pretty quiet during the week and not a lot of hikers but today the lot was full with cars from several colder climate states. I saw several sets of flip flops and open toed sandals, oh well. A nice morning enjoying the breeze.

Quick hike in the morning after camping at the campsite. We were all tired from the 8 and a half mile night hike the night before where we went to the Romero Pools.

Pretty cool learning about the ruins there, and imagining what the native's life must have been like.

A quick, interesting train with ruins from native Americans and a Spanish ranch (Romero's) from the 1800s. Went on this hike with Charly and the boys, the morning after our night hike to Romero Pools and camp out at Catalina State Park.

I did this hike with a friend who was 77 at the time. She had no trouble with the trail and we enjoyed reading the signs and learning about the area.
