we decided to go down hidden valley and then what i call lower hidden valley and john calls pima wash
back up to the ridgeline at the stone house and finished on san gabriel
longer than i thought it would be with good elevation gain
something different
evidence of recent rains, healthy looking ocotillos and bursera trees along the way
solid hike - thanks, john :)

Initial thought was to go out to the McDowells but rain had me detouring to SM. Got to he TH around 5:30. Dry at the start, but within minutes a light drizzle had started. This turned into a light rain, but was over before I had finished the hike. Went up on Mormon and then took the National to Fat Mans Pass. Figured it would be easier going down the giant boulders in wet sandy shoes than up. It was fun. There was actually water flowing down one of the “drops”. You don’t see that very often. Great temps and a steady breeze made this wet outing very enjoyable. Great hike! Hard to believe it’s been close to 7 years since I last did it.

met john at 0415 to do hidden valley via geronimo
slightly different version this time, going up to the benchmark, then down guadalupe ridgeline
took a use trail and some boulder hopping to the top of hidden valley
made a side trip to one of two peaks, then headed back on national
just enough moonlight to see going up geronimo
shade or cloud cover most of the hike, very little breeze
a few other hikers and mountain bikers
nice sunrise, nice morning
done before 0800
thanks for hiking, lp

By the light of the moon and 50,000 street lights we got underway up the Geronimo trail. We hiked up to the benchmark above Eagle Pass, admiring the sunrise, and continued on Guadalupe Ridge until we reached the top of Hidden Valley, dropping down to venture through. Next, we swung over to Two Peaks then returned to Geronimo via the National trail.
Temps were tolerable. Fun hike. Thanks Kelly. :)

It is now light at 5 AM :o Hiked through Hidden Valley for some variety on my workout hike. Crowds continue to thin out on the trails, even though parking was full when I departed for home.
Warmed up by 8 AM after another nice coolish morning. :)

Parked at San Gabriel and headed over to Young Man trail and up that. Hot, no breeze. Was going to do more of Guadalupe Ridge before dropping down, but I decided I didn’t feel like dying up there, so I dropped down at the eastern end of Hidden Valley and then down the wash. The wash is my favorite part of this loop. Up to San Gabriel Ridge, and down that to finish out the loop. Only saw a few people today.

Noticed that San Gabriel Ridge is now part of the new Guadalupe Perimeter trail, which seems to start west of the Helipad Trail off Desert Classic. It runs east through Warpaint, over to San Gabriel, up the ridge, then west to where I’m assuming it ends at the start of National. That’s a guess based off the park’s master plan (which they are barely following, even in this case) and the fact that the last sign post I saw at the top of San Gabriel points west, but I didn’t notice any others.

Also, it appears that Marcos De Niza trail now ends at that same signpost at the top of San Gabriel Ridge, instead of at the Beverly Canyon junction. Again, not quite following the master plan, but there’s a sign. Will update the Marcos guide and official route sometime in the next few days.

Up San Gabriel Ridge, which is not my favorite in terms of footing. Down past the CCC buildings, passing a few chuckwallas sunning themselves on the rocks. Up Mormon Loop, crossing paths with a Gila monster. Over to Hidden Valley and down that, where two little kids wanted to hike with us rather than their family. Once we pried them away, we stayed in the wash since up to that point, there’d been no solitude on the hike. The wash is my favorite part of the hike, so we took our time through there. Some nice lavender blooming in the wash. Once back at the buildings, we headed back up to San Gabriel Ridge and back down that to the car. Warm, but a pleasant breeze most of the time.

Parked at San Gabriel. Took Desert Classc west, then up Young Man. West on Guadalupe Ridge almost all the way to the west end, then down to National on a good use trail. East on National, through Hidden Valley, and down the wash. Already need to cut back some vegetation in the wash again—next time. Back up at the stone building, then down San Gabriel Ridge. The clouds that moved in were nice, and a pleasant breeze most of the way.

I let the kids pick the hike today, and this is one of their favorites. Headed up San Gabriel, which was a little warm in the sun. Some whining ensued, but I didn’t have to threaten anyone. West on Guadalupe Ridge, which was slow at times with the kids crawling all over the boulders and trying to share their snacks with squirrels. Dropped down off the ridge just on the west side of Fat Mans Pass. Luckily it was cloudy again by then, and much cooler. Through Hidden Valley and down the wash. Light rain at that point, but the rocks weren’t slick yet. Kids were still having fun climbing around. Heavier rain and cold wind on the way back down San Gabriel; we went as fast as we could without slipping on the rocks. Despite the cold, the kids still wanted shaved ice afterwards. Those Salewas, despite being at least halfway through their tread life, do a pretty good job of gripping wet surfaces, better than my Salomons.

Parked at San Gabriel. Went west on Desert Classic for a short distance, then up the drainage on the west side of San Gabriel Ridge. Super fun, not brushy. I stayed in the drainage about halfway, then up to Guadalupe Ridge. Will stay in the drainage the entire way next time though.

West on Guadalupe Ridge, almost to the end, then dropped down to National on a good use trail just east of the weather station. East on National, then down Hidden Valley. Stayed in the drainage below Hidden Valley. A few spots through there had been getting brushy the last few months, so I trimmed most of that back on my way down. Side trip to the mine. I don’t know what they hoped to mine there, but the exposed granite is gorgeous. Makes me wish I had that in my house. My contractor would probably faint though if I asked him to rip all the existing granite (8 or 9 slabs) out of my house just because I saw some pretty rocks while on a hike.

Turned back uphill before reaching the stone buildings, then down San Gabriel Ridge. Winter is over. There was a rattler sunning himself on San Gabriel. The hikers in front of me startled him down under the rocks, but from what I saw, I think it was a Speckled. Saw two chuckwallas just a few minutes later. Cool when there was clouds, but warm and very muggy when the clouds disappeared.

Met Tom at the Pima Canyon TH just before 0800 and headed up Marcos De Niza. No gradual warm up on that one. Continued west on the full length of Guadalupe Ridge, taking a snack break before dropping down to National. East on National, then through Hidden Valley. We stayed in the wash below Hidden Valley so Tom could see the big bursera tree. Stayed in Pima Wash all the way to the trailhead rather than taking the road.

Nice day, less clouds than expected, but a pleasant breeze most of the way. Good to chat with Tom again!

A bit late on posting this one , at least it’s in the same month. After some pleading with @LindaAnn she kindly agreed to lead me on a guided hike to find the large Busera Tree. Does everyone besides me know you can hike from Pima Trailhead to Eagle Pass and back with barely putting your hiking shoes on National Trail? Observed that Linda really really likes this loop. Started from Pima trailhead right up Marcos di Niza , then up and down ,mostly up proceeding along the Guadalupe Ridgeline. Some skepticism raised about the tour guide however , as after crossing Beverly Canyon each hill climb was announced with “this is the last climb before the end “ :? I was granted a snack break ,fittingly near the top of Old Man Trail . After subtle hints that break time was over we proceeded down toward Buena Vista took a right on National where after a short ways I was pleased to find I could still fit through Fatman’s pass :D . Linda has perfected a nice route through Hidden Valley and Pima Wash , over ,under and around boulders to solve the puzzle. After passing under a natural bridge and over a dry water fall , all along the hike my tour guide had been pointing out Busera Trees, but now I was standing next to a huge magnificent beautiful one, I don’t think my photos captured how nice it is. We encountered a couple of rock climbers here with their pads. Linda thought she saw some graffiti on a rock but as we closed in turned out to be a mat of some sort , thought it might have been used for sliding down the smooth rocks? She packed it out. The route through the wash was new to me , scenic rock formations and dry falls were observed and solitude provided despite being so close to National Trail, finally the sandy walk parallel to the old road to finish up. Seeing the large Busera now scratched off my to do list plus a nice bonus of learning a new route . Nice one Linda, thank you.
