Drove out to new Adero Canyon Trailhead in Fountain Hills only to learn the road into the TH is closed due to road construction. Due to open in November. We were about mile from the TH but there was no parking so we drove over to Lost Dog Wash TH in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Hiked LDW trail for a short distance then transitioned on to the Sunrise Trail for 2.5 miles, then turned around. As often happens it was 2.5 miles when we turned around but total miles showed 4.77. Trail is still very rocky :( . With Judy and Flat Coat Retriever Kai.

What a magical hike this turned out to be -- it's rare to see snow-capped peaks in the McDowell Mountains!

I thought about going out to the Supes to check out the winter wonderland, but opted to stay closer to home instead.

We started at the Lost Dog Wash TH, and went up to Sunrise Peak. When we got back to the hitching post, instead of going directly back to the TH, we took the Andrews-Kinsey Trail over to the Fountain Hills Preserve, where we took the Western Loop Trail up and over Peak 3098. There seemed to be 4-5 inches of snow up on 3098.

My feet got really wet on the way over to Sunrise Peak and Peak 3098. I'm glad we went early in the morning though: by mid-afternoon a lot of the snow had melted, especially on the south side of the mountains.

The views of the Mazzies were awesome -- they looked like a Colorado mountain range!

I was looking for an exercise/workout hike to do, and decided to hike from the new Adero Canyon TH to the Lost Dog Wash TH and back. On the way back, I went up to Sunrise Peak. Then when I got close to the Adero Canyon TH on the way back, I was looking for some additional mileage and elevation gain, so I went on a loop by going up and down the Western Loop Trail, and coming back to the TH on the Promenade Trail. This extra loop added about 1.5 miles and 400' of elevation gain to the hike.

As for distances, from the Adero Canyon TH it is 3.0 miles to the hitching post below Sunrise Peak; 3.3 miles to the top of Sunrise Peak; and 5.7 miles to the Lost Dog Wash TH.

This is a decent hike if you are in the area and are looking for some miles and elevation gain. The scenery is typical for this part of the Sonoran Desert. There were not many people on the trails, which was surprising, but nice.

Eighth annual Turkey day Sunrise Peak over and back hike. I missed last years hike due to a frog in my throat (and a titanium plate). Great group as usual. Good to have Dave and Joe show up to join us. Awesome sunrise. Lots of hikers out. Thanks all. :)

Since this was my first hike in Arizona in 6 months, I did this warm-up hike, to make sure I remembered how to put one boot in front of the other boot.
The Sunrise Trail is a bit more eroded than normal, and the Andrews-Kinsey is in fine shape.

From the A-K Tr I ended up on Pk 3585. I then went down to a saddle between Pk 3585 and Pk 3804 (AKA "The Twins"). From the saddle, I used a ridgeline for a bit, then went back down to the A-K Tr and re-traced my steps to the TH.

Now I'm ready to go out and hunt down some little round disks in the ground.
Wish me luck. Happy Halloween. :scared:

Tune-up hike before Wellness Wednesday hike at South Mountain. Could have gone farther, but ran out of energy (without bars to refuel).

Early morning jog/hike in the McDowells. Did an over back starting from the Lost Dog Wash TH. Had to wait a few minutes for the gates to open, but was on the trail shortly after 5am. Cloud coverage was thick this morning. There wasn't a sunrise and honestly there wasn't much of a sun for the duration of the hike. No complaints! :D Managed to jog the west side and then hike to the summit and then jogged down to the Fountain Hill side. Had to stop a couple times to admire the wildlife. On the west side, just before the Andrew-Kinsey connection I encountered two deer and then on the east side just as I got off the Summit a trail and had started my descent, I came across a tortoise in the middle of the trail. That little guy had gained some elevation! I wonder how long it took him to get up there  . On the return trip, I jogged what I could, but ended up hiking the last quarter to the top. Bypassed the summit on the return trip and jogged down. The trail is a rough run. Only in part because of the elevation. Very rocky in quite a few spots, which causes you to watch your speed as well as your step. As usual, the east side had a lot more traffic than the west side.

I like this alternate way up Sunrise Peak! More challenging and less crowded!
The trailhead only allows about 5 cars, but it's rarely a problem.
Having hiked on the main trail to the peak before, I wanted to try something different. It's fun!
You follow the wash out of the neighborhood before connecting to the main Sunrise trail coming from Lost Dog.
There are a few rough spots to climb, but not too bad. You clamber over the boulders in the wash. And pass under a couple bridges with neat designs on the walls. I say if you want a little something different, give this trail a try!

Went on a short loop hike from the Lost Dog Wash TH - MSP with my daughter and her three children. We started out on the LDW Trail, connected to the Sunrise Trail, then to the Ringtail Trail looping past Lost Dog Overlook and back to the LDW Trail for a distance of 2.5 miles. This is a good short hike for children. If you're not familiar with the trails I recommend picking up a trail map at the TH. There are so many trail intersections that it can get confusing. Parts of the trail are covered with loose rocks of varying sizes. As usual the two younger kids started out complaining and trying to think up excuses to stop the hike and go back home. The rocky trail was one of their complaints but after a mile into the hike they were having a good time running and skipping from rock to rock - go figure! :? There are some nice views of the valley, especially at Lost Dog Overlook. Back at the trailhead the two littles didn't want to leave so it was a successful outing.

This was my first time hiking sunrise Peak, and it was a very enjoyable hike with my family. Some elevation gain was nice, and we were able to see the fountain at fountain hills as we approached the peak. Great weather!

I suppose you could call this a Turkey Trot based on the folks in the group. We always have a great time and this year was no exception. Warm and Breezy today with a decent amount of folks out enjoying the trails.

Hope to see JohnLP back in the mix next year. Happy Thanksgiving to all of the great folks on HAZ!

Cooler temps made desert hiking an option this weekend with high of only 85. We wanted something close to town so decided on long loop in the McDowell Mountain Preserve and McDowell Regional Park. Starting from Lost Dog Wash TH and over to Sunrise Peak to start the loop. Then down Andrew Kinsey Trail to the Sonoran Trail and the backside of the McDowell’s. Sonoran hooks into Dixie Mine Trail and then Prospector Trail to Windmill and Coachwhip in McDowell Regional Park. Coachwhip to Pemberton over to Boulder Trail and Marcus Landslide to Tom’s Thumb TH. We staged a vehicle at the Tom’s Thumb with cold drinks and snacks for recharge.

After nice break we headed up Tom’s Thumb Trail crossing over to Gateway side and picking up the Gateway Loop Trail. Took another break on Gateway Saddle before picking up Bell Pass Trail to Paradise Trail. Paradise goes through the neighborhood but links with Quartz and over to Taliesin. Eventually made it back to Lost Dog Wash Trail and the trailhead as it was getting dark. Long day but the trails in MSP and MMRP are all great quality so that made it much easier.
