Fairly easy hike in a great canyon with a few waterfalls. It was pretty cold for our hiking club outing, but well worth the effort. Good road into the TH. My track only goes to the second waterfall, since a hiker was injured trying to reach the top of the first waterfall and we had to abort. His knee was badly damaged, but he was able to walk out with a lot of help. Progress outbound was very slow, and my track elevation profile looks screwy. The inbound track should be pretty good.

A hike to the plateau surrounding Canaan Mountain, South of Zion.
A mile from the parking lot you reach the narrows of Water Canyon. How easy you get past the narrows depends on the water level - we where end of October, lucky!
The trail climbs on the almost vertical left side of the canyon.
At the top, after a short descent, things get much easier on gentle slickrock slopes. Follow the valley to the left for about 1/4 mile, then start climbing to the right. You soon reach the "wave"-like area, with beautiful domes and views towards Zion.
You can continue West to the edge of the mesa for more wonderful views.

Overall water levels were fairly low, but the day was hot so it was enjoyable being wet.
Anchors in pretty good condition. Parts of trail up suffering from severe erosion.

This was a great day in a very nice canyon. As others have mentioned who have done Keyhole Canyon recently, there were mixed feeling thinking about what had happened here so recently (12 mothers and children killed, one young boy still missing) during flash floods.

Certain portions of this canyon reminded me of the Subway, and there were stellar views throughout. The trail to the top was pretty eroded in any sections off the slickrock, but any sketchy parts are on slickrock with solid footing. Needless to say, water levels were higher than usual (and muddier) after all the rain, so there were some sections of swimming for us. Nice and warm out, though, so no need for wetsuits. My favorite was the "crack" rappel, where you first drop through a narrow slit, then end in a free-hanging rappel.

At the first rappel, we came upon an interesting scene - a young couple from Spain were descending their first ever technical canyon with a local guide. They spoke very little English, while their guide spoke no Spanish. We told the guide how to say "left" and "right," and it must have all worked out okay, as we saw them again back at the parking area, all smiles. A likely highlight of their trip to the US. Not sure I would be brave :scared: enough to do something like that with someone I couldn't communicate with.

When dry you can bypass all water until the last rap where it is waist deep.
