Beautiful day for a hike in the Berkeley Hills. The poison oak is turning red which means fall is right around the corner, which here in the East Bay really means "Indian summer." There were a lot of people which was to be expected, especially because the suburbs to the east were sweltering through mid-90s heat. Most of the trail is bone dry and even crumbling in places, but there were a few microclimates that were muddy. There were always trees shading these spots on the trail, and they must catch and concentrate moisture from the fog that regularly blows in from the bay and the Golden Gate.

I saw only my 2nd rattlesnake in California. A trail runner quickly passed me going the other direction, and I noticed (more like heard) a rattler only a step in front of me about 2 seconds afterwards. It was only about 2' long, but pretty fat, and it never rattled though I heard it slithering on the leaves. This guy was much more mellow than the other one I met.

Went up Big Springs to the Bay Area Ridge Trail. Over to the Seaview Trail to the top. Down the Lupine Trail. Saw a monster plane participating in Fleet Wake over the bay.
