Revisited a good loop that I had done a few years back with hopes of seeing some good wildflowers, and getting in a good bit of mileage. For better or for worse, this hike accounted for about 20 percent of my yearly total so far...just haven't had the time to hike like I have come accustomed to. The Chuparosa were blooming nicely in the wash, but the brittlebush were on the tail end of their show. I started up the Upper Javelina trail, never saw any, but I definitely smelled a few on the way. Once I got up onto the Wild Mustang trail, there was a sheer proliferation of color. Brittlebush, Ocotillo, Globemallow, Parry's Penstemon, Desert Marigold, Fleabane Daisy, Gooding's Verbena, Fairy Duster, a few Cholla and Prickly Pears, and some fantastic Banana Yuccas. I managed to keep a good pace despite stopping to take pictures periodically. Great loop with decent elevation gain, did not see anyone else the whole time so that was a real plus. |
