Route Scout GPS Route Recorded on Route Scout View
Started out at Meridian TH at about 6:30 AM. The parking lot was almost full and temps were in the low 90,'s. I headed clockwise and the trail was free of people until the Wind Cave junction. From here to the turn off for the Pass Mt Summit trail things denigrated into a cluster of what Camelback or Piestewa looks like after work on a weekday. People were courteous enough to move aside as I passed and about 50% of the people responded to my greetings.

Pass Mt Summit was easy to find with the blue dots and arrows. The views are great and I had the trail and summit to myself.

Continued the Pass Mountain loop clockwise and only ran into 4 people. The final couple of miles were a bit warm.

Wanted to test out a pair of new Salomon hiking shoes so decided to come out to Usery Park. Parked at the pass mountain trailhead and started hiking on the pass mountain trail to the wind cave trail. Enjoy the cool down returning on this short stretch of trail vs starting at the wind cave parking lot. Once on the wind cave trail it was average busy for a weekday , steady flow of hikers surprisingly giving way for my uphill progress. Once pass the non maintained sign ran into one young lady having some solitude time sitting on a rock, found no one else up here. A little below the summit came upon a crevice with significant bee activity since I had my glimpse at Superstition Mountain from here decided not to press my luck and proceed further. On the way down only a couple of people in the Cave, on the way up was the largest Great Dane I’ve ever seen. Lower down I paused as 3 young ladies went running by, after they assured me no bears were chasing us I resumed my leisurely pace back to pass mountain trail. From there back to pass mountain trailhead, nice day for a hike

My group and by hike buddy Mel's group joined forces to hike the ridgeline today. The only member to have hiked the ridgeline before was Mel, and he's done it many times, it was good to have him on the hike. We did the loop clockwise opting for the ridgeline first and returning on the Wind Cave trail. Trail to the top and along the ridgeline was easy to find and follow. While there is some climbing up and down, nothing was extreme enough to frighten off this scaredy cat. Solid line of people to navigate through heading back down the Wind Cave trail at lunch.

I went out joy hiking. Went up wind cave and beyond.,Hit the south peak(2900) on the ridge line. Then went north and hit peak 3100 and peak 3200. Kept going north and hit one more little peak. From there I kept going north and went off the northwest corner and connected with the loop trail at the intersection with the Maricopa trail. Took the loop trail back to my car. Very windy but good temps!

Was looking for something close and new this morning so thought I would hike this loop which I really enjoyed. There was a team of fire recruits training on the Wind Cave Trail, they were coming down carrying a cadet on a stretcher as I was going up. Everything pass the Wind Cave and along the ridgeline was new for me and since I was solo I took my time. Found the summit log and signed in. My decent off the north end needs work as most of the time I was just plowing though grass and loose rocks. Once on the Pass Mountain Trail is was a quick hike back to the truck. Will definitely do this hike again.

I needed to do a hike that was a little rougher to test my knee out with some big plans for hikes in the summer. I normally don't like off trail hikes, but this one has a purpose, and it's a popular enough of a hike that there many sections where there actually is a trail to follow. Andy has done this hike several times, so he was willing to go with me.

We got an early 5:45am start since I only live 20 minutes away. I decided to do this hike in reverse from what it's normally done, going the Pass Mt. Loop Trail first and ascending to the ridgeline from the northeast part of the mountain. The first hour was nice in the shade since we were on the west side of the mountain. the sun hit us on the north end and stayed with us the rest of the hike.

The off trail section from the Pass Mt. loop is very easy to spot, but it fades quickly. The trail fades in and out in spots, so having a GPS track is helpful. Once on the ridgeline, the route is fairly obvious, but can get tricky in certain sections. Neither the cairns nor the spray painted arrows were nearly as horrifying as previous triplogs and forum posts make them out to be, IMO. In fact, at one spot Andy got disoriented and asked me which way to go, while I was about 50 yards behind him. I was able to see the white spray painted spots to his right, which helped direct him away from some of the more serious exposure spots that might not have been so obvious from his vantage point. At one spot along the ridgeline I spotted some deer scat, which was kind of suprising. This seems like dicey terrain for anything other than goats.

I've been dealing with knee issues since the Arcadia Trail hike and last week got diagnosed with the beginning of arthritis in my right knee. Not great news, but at least now i know what i'm dealing with. I got a new knee brace that I used for this hike and it seems to have helped out immensely. I bumped my knee pretty good at one spot, and bent it a little farther than my comfort at another spot and the rest of the day it's been feeling very good. Hoping this lasts at least thru the summer.

Great hike, amazing view. I would recommend a dog for the windcave and some of this trail. I really doubt a dog will summit unless carried.

Trail is great up until the windcave then progressively gets worse until you're left with balanced rock markings. Look for balance stones. I ended up going a bit off course a few times cause I found a nice path but soon turned to be a dead end. Really pay attention to how you got up. No real risk as I saw my vehicle and the parking lot the entire ascent.

I have been wanting to get this one checked off for awhile now. I headed to the Usery Rd trailhead and made my way towards the mountain. The other day, I shot up to the Wind Cave from here in a really quick fashion. I felt horrible upon reaching the cave however. Today I took it slow on the ascent there.

Upon passing the cave I traveled about a hundred yards or so and just decided to head straight up from there. It is the most common area that I tend to come down from when descending from Peak 3127. I typically blaze a path upwards towards this peak that is different each time. I forgo the switchbacks and the confusion and it was nice.

I changed into my approach shoes at this point and proceeded onto the ridgeline. The first few up and downs were kind of gnarly in that I was expecting to see at least something that resembles a trail; nope. Cruising up here is just not possible. Ankle busting rocks are hidden by tall grass. This also leads you to not getting to fully enjoy the views unless you come to a complete stop.

As I dotted my way across the ridge the going was very slow. I just wasn't mentally prepared for this kind of slog after a long day at school. And this led directly to me turning this hike into a hellish beast on the descent from the ridgeline. Apparently, I was due east from the gps track of the descent. I was well in a drainage before I realized my error. When I checked to see where I was, compared to the track I had loaded, it was just easier to stay in. The drainage was hard and the most overgrown section of real estate I have ever tread through. I'll be pulling various deceased plant life from my skin over the next several days. On this particular path there was also a couple tricky down climbs. This section was .4 miles in length and took 28:56 to descend 561 feet. My average moving pace through there was .77 MPH..er what? That is definitely not my cup of tea.

Nice way to spend the late afternoon. Not to warm I passed a few prior to the wind cave going up and did not see anyone till after the wind cave going down. The summit was peaceful and the views wrapped up a nice day

Finally cleared this off our Bucket List, took long enough ( 22 yrs ) :o Wind Cave was packed, glad to get up around the corner. Amazes me that a lot of people trail blaze the easiest and shortest way up and down to the southern summit. We watched a family with 2 kids bushwhack down the steepest western part, and really, heard how concerned they were !!! Got up to the saddle and turned left and made our way across the spine. As we got to the doorway we spotted painted dots and arrows showing the best way up and over, we're not a big fan of these, but thanks to who ever lead the way and placed all the huge cairns and dots. Also a trail was started, I think maybe using a game trail. Made it a lot simpler. Also when the cairns ran out, they placed a X on a rock, near the edge of the cliff, but it looked like it lead back down West and connected with Wind Cave Trl ??.... We kept going up to right on the land bridge and worked our way over to the Summit, signed in and headed back down to Pass Mtn Loop Trl ( Very slippery, be careful ) and back to the TH Great Day, Happy to have done this :y: :D

After doing my 3004/Pass Mountain loop I decided to head up Wind Caves and continue on to the summit. Past the "hike at your own risk" sign the trail becomes steeper and requires some basic scrambling up to the summit. There are some white arrows and flagging tape marking paths up to the top.

I wanted to do something I hadn't done this year for that unique hit. On my way to the park I realized that I had never hiked this one solo before. I've always taken either the kiddos or the female variety up here as it is time enough for basically anyone with a pulse. For such a short hike the views are quite spectacular, especially this time of day.

Nice day for this hike as the trail was remarkably not crowded. Trails going everywhere so actual trail was hard to follow after Wind Cave, good thing Bob had been there many times and knew the right path.

Friends in from MN. Girls went shopping, left me an excuse to take Tom over to Pass Mountain show him his 1st AZ hike. Was just going to stop at Wind Cave, but he handled it pretty well so up we went. Great time, except I forgot my phone :tt:
