Wifey asked to train for a backpacking trip we are undertaking in February. I had fantasies of the idyllic forested canyon stretch of Bug Springs, complete with a hidden waterfall, so thought it would be a great stroll with some nice places to set up hammocks and read. There might even be snow!

In my enthusiasm for this, however, I neglected the minor issue of 400' of elevation gain in the first half mile... and the fact that all that gain is lost descending into the idyllic forested canyon and must be done again on the way back... and the fact that my poor wife hasn't been able to get much exercise in over a year and was woefully unprepared for what awaited her.

So basically I subjected her to a brutal, murderous slog (twice), and I wound up carrying both of our packs on the way out. Sorry, love! She was a trooper and we did enjoy hanging out at the waterfall.

Drove to Upper Green Mountain TH to do Guthrie Mountain as the fire closure order excluded it from the closure, but when arriving found a trail closed sign with the order (not listing Green Mountain Trail) attached. 🙄 Drove up to Palisades to talk to a ranger about it, and the sign there says “closed until further notice.” Ugh.

Backtracked down the mountain looking for something open, stopped at Lower Green Mountain TH and hiked Bug Springs. Didn’t do the entire trail, just went a little over two miles in and turned around do to time.

things are slowly reopening.

bug springs was totally unaffected by the fire. so it remains a great trail. it is going to get overused for sure though. parking was an issue and on a trail where i normally see 0-5 people, i saw probably 50-60 including a ton of (nice and courteous) mountain bikers

still nice to be back. what happened here is a lot for me to try and wrap my head around

Perfect day for a hike. Overcast and in the 60's up on Mt. Lemmon early this morning. Doing another social hike with the guys from S.A.R.A.

Went downhill on the trail at a leisurely pace while I was regaled with tales of the various rescues up on Mt. Lemmon. Turning into one of the highlights of my week, these guys have 100's of years of trail knowledge and experience around Tucson between them all.

Parked at the Bug Springs TH and hiked to San Pedro Vista and back (stats guesstimated from fricknaley's triplog last year).

I was worried about the heat because there was no breeze and a lot of sun exposure on the way up, but thankfully it wasn't too bad and I had just enough water. I'm glad to have gotten on both of these trails for the first time. Bug Springs is fantastic (if you don't mind some uphill in both directions), and Green Mountain isn't too shabby either (great views of the northeast Catalinas down into San Pedro valley). I'll be sure to come back for Green/Guthrie summits sometime this summer and Bug Springs when it's cooler.

Biked down the highway from the top then hiked NOBO from the Gordon H campground. Excellent climb on quality trails that's just as rugged, scenic and enjoyable as the regular passage. Great views throughout and very green at the higher elevations.

parked at the sycamore reservoir trailead at Hirabayshi and made my way up bug springs and green mountain trails to the san pedro vista. ended up being a pretty difficult route

fair amount of traffic for these trails, but certainly not heavy. there are maybe 3 downed trees on green mountain? it had been a while since i was on the upper green mountain trail.

one little patch of snow left up near the top

got pretty warm down low. thankful for the forgiving breeze

Gorgeous, well-maintained trail. The trail starts out strong, switchbacking up a ridge which you will follow until you peak and descend into the oak-filled canyon. Monsoon the night before and we started early to beat the heat. It was cool and breezy the entire way with lots of running water. Turned around at the creek (about 2.5 miles) as my partner was getting fatigued and wasn't sure she could complete the entire route out-and-back. Will definitely be back to complete soon!

We hadn't done Bug Springs trail in a long time and never the spring itself. Started at the Prison Camp parking just off Catalina Hwy, semi bushwhacked up the canyon to the spring (no water, although some in pools about half way up), then cut up to the main trail. We followed the very nice trail up to the point where it looks down on the Hwy near General Hitchcock CG and turned around. I don't think many people include the drop down to the hwy in this hike.

I had noticed a "trail" down the drainage on my GPS basemap and we decided to see where it went. It was probably the old trail up (since the new one ascends gradually), but it is wildly inaccurate. Don't follow the line on the map, but just follow the drainage (and my track) and it eventually rejoins the trail. There is some really nice and relatively easy boulder hopping along the way down, along with forgiving vegetation.

Beautiful day out and decent workout.

Started out 11am Sat 4/30/16, plenty of parking in the little Bug Springs trail-head parking lot. The dry, first part heads straight up. This is where I got my tougher cardio out of the way (but really there were plenty more opportunities throughout). There was one large horse group and 2 mountain bikers. The canyon part is the prettiest part, made me happy I finally tried this trail. Spotted several Mexican Jay's in the canyon. Reached the end (small parking strip on the highway, picnic spot across the road). Took me about 2 hrs 15 mins one way. No bushwhack pants needed, shorts were fine.

I started at the lower trailhead across from the Prison Camp, and hiked to a point in the canyon. Ii turned back when a mountain biker told me I had a little more to go than daylight allowed me to hike. Actually, I was not super impressed with this trail, it was chillier than expected, and for some reason I was really tired and really hungry.
