Putting this under swimming as that was the main objective today.
I did hike to a couple different swim holes and a bit of the Cottonwood trail, but soaking in the Gila was the pleasure today on this 100+ sunny day.
Farmers have now taken about all the Gila's water along Safford so Gila Box is where to find it now.
Parked at Riverview and hiked down to "Castle Rock" were the water flow was perfect, some deep pools to soak in with just enough flow to keep it cool, but not sweep you away.
While soaking I saw a - flycatcher, robin, harris hawk, heron & several vultures high above.
Nice break from the norm today!

Overnight road/hiking/camping trip into Graham/Greenlee county's Black Hills.
First stop Guthrie Peak - Covered in poppies, quite the sight, many people pulled over along 191 taking pics.
Rockhound Area - Not as many poppies as Guthrie, but still many big patches.
Gila Box - Lots of wildflowers starting along the road in.
Cottonwood Trail - Many wildflowers throughout.
Riverview - Home for the night, site #5 was my choice. Campsites were all full of wildflowers.
The Gila River down below was flowing strong with chocolate color water and overflowing in many places.
Excellent poppy show this year, good amount of wildflowers in Gila Box and lots of green coming in ..... and it's only gonna get better!

The goal for this brief camping trip was to dust off the gear and finally do my first overnighter of the year, plus hopefully get to meet some of the folks from the Arizona Wilderness Coalition who were there for a Meetup event. I am not a member, but specifically wanted to meet Jonathan from Portal to see if he had any new information on the woman who went missing at Rustler Park in 2015. When I arrived at the campground late Friday afternoon there was only one other camper, so I picked a spot to my liking, then headed off to do some photography before it got dark.

Back at camp, I set up the tent while I still had some light, then relaxed in the dark enjoying some brews and watching the sky for signs of storm development. There was some lightning off to the northwest, but nothing was happening nearby. It remained quiet the entire night. About 9:00 a car drove in and headed right up to my camp. I had two lights on, so they must be looking for someone I figured. I asked if they were with the AWC, and they said yes; they were looking for Jonathan, who was supposed to already be here. So, it turns out the other camper was who we were looking for. They headed over to set up at his spot, and I walked over, got to hang out with some new folks and talk with Jonathan as hoped. :)

I didn't camp another night like they did, nor join them on their hikes, partly because of some ongoing physical limitations, plus I wanted to get back to Tucson Saturday, so I could be home for the anticipated storm event (that turned out great :D ).

Autumn hiking Bonita with visiting friends

Started with Pipeline Road to the end then back. Autumn colors were better than expected and the creek looked wonderful, My friends were very impressed with their first trip up the canyon. 2 beautiful bighorn ladies were spotted up high along the way.
Then it was back to Riverview CG where Dave & Kathy have been camped for the last couple days. Took a little rest break before setting back out for a short afternooner down to the Gila River and the "Castle Rock" view. We then looped back up along the Cottonwood Trail to Riverview at sunset for dinner, campfire & conversation.

All good things ended with goodbyes, one more night of camping for them and one dark drive back home for me.
Good day spent with great friends in a most favorite place .....

Wanted to get one more trip in at the Box before hunting season starts.
Payed for a site at Riverview CG to park and decide later on an overnight camp.
First up was a visit down to "Castle Rock" along the Gila River. Then a bit on the Cottonwood Trail ending at the Serna Cabin area. Went a bit up Bonita Creek then back down along the River Trail. Sunset was had at the Wildlife Platform before returning back to my campsite.
No big wildlife today, but lots of butterflies & dragonflies with still a good number of flowers left.
Gila was flowing strong, Bonita Creek was not.
Autumn colors 'bout 25% turning.
The weather was warm tonight so I opted out of a campfire/overnight stay and returned home.
Love Gila Box ..... wish I could live down there ..... I've asked ..... BLM said No ..... :pk:

TV & Mobile alert warnings all night that the Gila River at Solomon would rise 14 feet and be at flood status. Got up early and headed out to see it, it's quite a sight to see the Gila flooding!
Arrived at the entrance overlook to see the Gila flowing strong again, not quite at a flood status, but lots of chocolate milk flowing down that there river ..... definitely not a swimming day with that flow.
Made many river view stops on the drive in & out with several hikes starting on the Cottonwood Trail :next: Wildlife platform :next: Spring Canyon :next: Dry Canyon and many side trips.
Monsoon/overcast weather all day, rained on me half the time & the whole Box just looked Awesome today!
Wildlife - Grey fox, 2 javelina, many wind surfing vultures, millipedes, brown & black tarantulas.

Wanted to escape the March crowds at Roper and go somewhere car-camping (to test out the platform bed) that wouldn't be crowded - that eliminated State and National Parks and popular Forest Service camps ... also wanted close/quick to get to and as warm as possible. Which led me to good old Riverview - I was not disappointed - only two other campers in the whole place! :y:
The wind was unrelenting. I was glad I had the camper bed to retreat to and read out of the wind between short hikes.
Two random black and white dogs ran thru my campsite and when they heard me calling them, they passed thru again - this time barking at me. Saw a camper hop in his truck and go retrieve them.
The bed worked out great! It was the best camp sleep ever - almost like my bed at home and I was blissfully comfortable, even with overnight lows 10 degrees lower than my normal tent-camping limit.
Thankfully I had a nice, wind-free morning and was able to enjoy a warming fire. Enjoyed all the little birdy visitors - especially the cactus wren calling from on top of my shade ramada ... the sound of his little feet as he ran back and forth from end to end  !
90% sure I saw a badger on the drive home.

My first time ever in Gila Box at 48
It was a lot like when I was 47 ..... Awesome :y:
Completed the entire Cottonwood Trail and hit a little bit of everything else.
Ocotillos are leafy green, a few yellow flower bouquets along the roads, cottonwoods are mostly filled in.
The Mighty Gila was flowing good, Bonita Creek was gentle.
Saw a coati and several bighorns, but all were far across the river ](*,)
It was a good reward day!

Also want to wish RW a Happy B-Day ... Pisces Rock Arizona!

Drove out to Gila Box in the late afternoon to visit with Pam on her last night spent out at Riverview Campground.
Arrived at the campsite to find her gone and presumed out hiking so I jumped onto the Cottonwood Trail for a short hike around myself. Took the trail up to the Kearny Monument, then down to the Serna Cabin & Gila River. Met a nice couple down by the river and had a very enjoyable chat during which they pointed out a critter to me across the way.
Critter chasing then took up the rest of my time down by the river as I made my way back to Pam's campsite during sunset.
Arrived to find her back from her hike, we then set up chairs around the campfire and visited half the night away. She shared pics of her rams with me and I shared pics of my coati, we did good with the wildlife this evening!
Good time spent out at the Box, Thanks Pam!

Driving, Camping, Hiking, and Photographing in the Box... Tons of Wildlife and the Trees were just starting to turn. Got a Hat Trick of the Ring Tailers driving back to Camp the 2nd Night. It was Dark, of course... First a Raccoon running down the Road, then a Ring-tailed Cat crossing the Road and scaling a Vertical Cliff on the other Side, then a Lone Coatimundi.... Wouldn't see any of them while it was Light, but I spent several Hours watching a Herd of Bighorn Sheep with two Rams that were just starting to become Adversaries.... So Cool to watch those slight Interactions and the Leader's Angst about the Contender...

Chad joined me for some of it and we finished Catching Up on Life and News until the wee hours of the Morning on my last Night.

Photoset to come, probably next Year...

With unseasonably cool temps hanging on and my higher elevation choices looking a bit chilly for my taste, I decided on a quick overnight at the Riverview Campground - first time I have stayed a night in the Gila Box.
Settled on site #9 in the completely empty campground. Gorgeous setting, nice facilities, and the river just a five minute walk below. Had just about the entire 23,000 acres of desert, river, and mountain all to myself - for just $5! Can't beat that.

Well ..... it's March so I guess it's time to start looking for wildflowers?
Was headed out to the Black Hills and made a split second decision at the turn sign to check out Gila Box instead which is much closer.
Didn't expect a lot today, boy was I wrong!
First the Gila river was running well above average, there were flowers everywhere on the drive in and along my hikes, Bonita Creek was flowing well and the whole area was much greener than expected ..... almost looked like summer up in there.
Hiked 2 separate sections of Bonita, the wildlife platform, a wee bit of the Cottonwood trail & ended on Bull pass road back to my vehicle completing a loop.
No coati or sheep spotted today, but I did see canyon ducks, butterflies, lizards, hawks, crows, fish & frogs.

Birthday hike ... 4th visit to the Box in nine days.
I'm going to be spending a lot of time here for the next six months or so ... I honestly cannot oversell it as a winter destination. You can bring your tent, camper, hiking boots, mountain bike, atv, kayak, fishing rod, gun, horse shoes, horse, camera, etc - just about any toy you own, you can use it here.
The previous two visits were spent mostly in the shady riparian confines of Bonita Creek, so this time I returned to the desert and river bank meanderings of the Cottonwood trail and several off-trail stretches along the river. Found some amazing sandy beaches for riverside lounging.
Good day.

Only a few others in the campground Sunday night. Wind came up around 3 AM, but not bad...it eased up shortly after sunrise. Walked a portion of Cottonwood Trail before packing up and heading out to do more exploring along Bonita Creek.
