Lovely hike, very easy and nice transition back into easy hikes after last week. A beautiful lake and area a bit up in altitude from Tucson so it was a bit cooler. Very crowded though, I was surprised by how crowded it was. Not the trail itself, for the most part I had it to myself once I got past the campgrounds. I ran into a handful of folks. But no privacy either, only for a few short moments was I ever out of eye sight or ear shot of boaters/fishers. I did get lost. At one point the trail forked and I went right instead of left. Walked about 1/4 of a mile down and thought, this isn't the right trail and back tracked. I was still on an established trail, just not the right one. I took my time, a nice leisurely stroll, lots of pictures. It was fun.

Day trip to Parker Canyon Lake for some kayaking and a picnic. A storm settled in over us once we were out on the lake, and rained steadily for a while. We waited out the thunderstorm on the shore, eating lunch. The soaking rain and cool pines felt so nice. I swam in the lake and made myself a seaweed wig: my swimming hole tradition. Before heading home, we drove a few miles south to find the ghost town of Sunnyside. I didn't have a map, which would have been helpful, so we didn't find it. Next time. Great trip in a beautiful area.

I was looking to extend my weekend and not return home to the heat too early. After lots of miles and elevation the previous two days, an easy stroll around Parker Canyon Lake under poofy monsoon clouds seemed to perfectly fit the bill.

Holiday weekend crowds were mostly gone and my late afternoon stroll was quite pleasant. The north end of the lake goes in and out of several inlets, before passing by the pumphouse at Collins spring.

Once west of Parker Canyon, the trail leads through a nice stand of ponderosa, where I encountered several large and recent piles of bear scat. There were at least two herons living at this end of the lake, and I also spotted an Osprey. A sign seemed to indicate that bald eagles make a home near the lake, but I didn't see any, nor did I see anything that resembled a nest that large.

There were a bunch of ducks and other birds as well as plentiful fish jumping.

Thunder rumbled in the distance and some brilliant lightning strikes were visible a few miles away just as I was finishing the loop. This hike was a perfect end to the weekend and I hit a good rain shower on the drive between the lake and Sonoita.

Neither of us had ever been to Parker Canyon Lake, so we drove down on a Saturday morning to spend the day kayaking and exploring. A car accident had closed the road to Patagonia, so we detoured through Benson. We rented a two person kayak and spent the afternoon rowing around the lake. We stopped at an island before heading back to the marina, where I swam for a bit. Lots of puffy clouds, but no monsoon, just a pleasant breeze. After returning the kayak, we relaxed on the shore, where Shauna read a book, and I finished a watercolor painting of the lake. Beautiful country!

Nice hike. Did it early morning. Saw some bear tracks, a couple of white-tailed deer and the first patch I've ever seen of 4-leaf clovers :D

southpawaz
the first day we were in the area near red mountain, we hiked that. then southpawaz wanted to go fishing the next day and offered up parker canyon lake, where i could take a walkabout while he was fishing. we took the scenic mostly unpaved route down through duquesne and lochiel. i was really digging being so close to the border, so we took a closer look. i've been across the border many times, but i had never driven very close to the border without a border crossing nearby. very cool.

when we got to the lake, i promptly started my counterclockwise trek. i did want to take the longest and highest possible route, so i passed by the closest inlet cutoffs in search of the farthest ones. this did lead me on a bit of a wander at the first inlet, when the trail completely petered out at the crossing. i made my way back, and then proceeded to follow the trail - and the longest possible journey - the rest of the way around.

nice views of the lake. when i returned back to the fisherman, it was time to go. i was kind of hoping for a relaxing adult beverage while he was fishing and instead i downed a quick one before we made our way back to our harshaw road campsite in patagonia via the paved northern route (sonoita). it was that kind of a loopy day.

Gorgeous morning for a hike around Parker Canyon. It was 22 degrees when I started out. Beautiful morning with frost on the ground and trail. Even though I got an early start there were a couple of fishermen on the dock. It was nice being the first person on the trail. This was my second time hiking around Parker Canyon Lake. The trail is a very easy one. Only a few ups and downs. No serious steep inclines. Lots of ducks on the lake and a few herons (I think they are herons). Unfortunately, I didn't have a camera with me. This trail is always deceptive. I started out to the right from the parking lot. The lake has many inlets, so everytime you think you are almost around the edge of the lake it is just a small inlet. Nice hike this morning!

We stopped here for a few hours after some wine tasting. It was about 4 p.m. on a Sunday and we ran across maybe seven people during our time there. It was simply lovely. Really nice afternoon and wonderful light for picture taking. Perhaps proximity to the border keeps people away?

Ah - a day at the lake. Sunshine, a hammock, the puppy sleeping under a tree... Mr. Wendy got to fish, I got to read my book and do a little off-trail exploring. Watching sunset from the dam was spectacular, and hiking back in the dusk was just wonderful, too. Golden Cottonwoods and willows, with just a touch of red here and there from the shrubery. Too bad we didn't get any fishies for dinner, but the cow at the Steak Out in Sonoita was a pretty good substitute. And, too bad I left the camera at home. Some days are meant to be painted in our minds eye!

Note to self: a over packed daypack and a shoulder-bag style cooler will weigh you down twice as much as a real backpacking pack. My shoulders kill!

Very fun hike and well worth the scenic 2 hour drive from Tucson. We didn't see a single person after hitting the trail and the area was so lush that it felt like we had left the state entirely. As the description mentions the lake appears "deceptively small" and we found ourselves wondering if we would ever make it to the dam which always appeared to be 'just a little bit further'.

This hike started out as in impromptu fishing trip. We grabbed the rods and a few bottles of water and headed out. The drive to the lake from Tucson was beautiful.

We got to the lake and set off on the trail in the counterclockwise direction mentioned in the description. Initially we were just looking for somewhere to cast with a fewer weeds, but as so often happens, we just kept going when it might have been a little smarter to turn around. When you look at the lake from dock, it looks deceptively small, so we told ourselves "the lake can't be that big, so lets just keep going." There are many inlets that you just can't see from the vantage point of the dock. The last one that you encounter before the dam is the largest, and in my opinion, the nicest part of the lake. In this area the trail starts to climb a little and you find yourself looking down on the lake in spots. There is a little island in the middle and we found a nice secluded picnic area that is presumably reached from some forest service road. Every time we found a likely spot, we would stop and try out luck at fishing. I caught a small bass (which we released) and Rob caught some really spectacular weeds. By the time we hit the dam, the sun was starting to set and we decided to pick up the pace, finishing the circuit just after dark.

There was an area right after the dam, where the trail starts to move away from the lake and another trail, that looks like a social trail, stays close to the shoreline. We opted for the social trail, which resulted in a little bit of confusion when we hit the spillway just after the dam. We eventually figured out that you have to climb up the hill and around the back of the area, where the actual trial would have spit us out had we just stayed on it.

Perhaps it was because we decided to do this hike AFTER visiting six vineyards in Elgin. Perhaps it was the necessary nap first. Perhaps it was the fact that hiking in the dark on a moonless night and having your headlamp battery die after about a mile ... whatever the reason, somehow we managed to hike nearly a mile and a half further than the trail actually goes! Despite that, it was a great adventure which began around 8pm and completed just after 11.

On what was a day around 90 degrees, the temperature was perfect after dark, and introduced the incredible sounds of animals we never saw, most prominently the frogs, but also ducks, and plenty of dive-bombing bats.

In summer, I'd recommend doing this early in the day, as only the north side of the lake features any real shade, and even that isn't much. The Canelo Hills are a beautiful part of Arizona and I look forward to future visits to this area.

In 98 I worked for the forest service and we got to walk this trail and fix it up. It was a beautiful day and there were lots of fish in the water. This trail was very easy, in my opinion. I plan to take my family there this summer.
