I planned a family hike for this Sunday, but my wife was kind of sick, so I took the kids out in the Sunday morning drizzle. A bribe of MOD Pizza for lunch afterwards was enough to quell any complaints. Dmitri was still tired for the first mile and a half, but after that he started talking and was in a better mood. We started off with rain gear, but after about 3 miles we shed all of it. The rain began to pick up the last mile, but not enough that we really got wet at all.

From the trailhead/staging area we took the southern part of the Pass Mt. trail out to the Meridian TH. I found a couple other trails there that head to the north. the one trail that's closer to the deep wash also heads south and appears to parallel the Pass Mt. Trail for a little while.

After that, we headed back on the Pass Mt. Trail, then did a 3 mile loop of the Cat Peaks/Blevins/Spillway/Levee/Noso Trails. Actually saw quite a few other hikers while we were out. We made much better time on the Usery Park trails than on the Pass Mt. Trail with less rocks to walk over and around.

The low hanging clouds over Pass Mt. made for some interesting and unusual scenery than what we normally see here. Trails were pretty muddy with lot of puddles. Nice to get out in the weather for the morning.

Nice overcast morning. Great time for a desert stroll. I even ran into an old Amigo which was pretty cool! :y:

I saw 5 deer and 1 coyote. I also saw 1 jackrabbit and 10 or so cottontails. Is it me or do the cottontails out number the jacks way more then they use too??

What a difference a day makes. Yesterday I was in the Goldfield Mountains and the temps were pleasant at this hour. Today... 92 at 8 a.m. when we pulled up to the Meridian trailhead. Such a shame too. My tween is starting to get interested in hiking. We only managed a couple of miles; my call to make it a short one.

With the weather up and down the last few weeks our Grandpa Days have been sporadic. Hot enough to swim one week and cool enough to hike the next. Isaac and Lily were out of school today so their energy level was elevated. They had their hiking shirts on when I picked them up and even made me a card and hiker necklace :o . They were up for 3 miles today. With energy left over we hit the riverside playground, grabbed a bite to eat, then finished off with a little Wiffle ball. The grandkids have upped their game. The backyard seems to be failing to keep the balls in side the perimeter. While at the playground a guy saw the hikearizona shirts the grandkids had on and asked if there was a kids hiking club he could find out about :D . Good times :y:

This is one of my favorite quick, easy and close by hikes. This is to me as Squaw Peak is to my brother. Today it was so lush and green. Very few hikers for a weekend 9 in 5 groups. Lots of mountain bikers. I lost count but at least 15 groups. This is a popular biking trail but I don't typically see anywhere near as many as I did today.

I did this hike when the Grandkids. We went in on Pass Mountain Trail. That adds a mile. Add another half for the Nature trail up front. We went in the Nature Center. The kids got to see a Tarantula, Gopher snake, King snake, Diamondback, and Isaac's favorite, a Scorpion. Finished off with McDonalds. Great kids, great weather, great time!

I went over to Usery to do some morning exploring on some different trails. Route Scout said 1050 AEG. Sounds high. I'll take 100. :D :y:

It's been too long since encountering a rattlesnake while mountain biking at Usery so when everything aligned...
1. I had the time
2. I felt like taking an easy ride
3. It was sunny but still low 70's in the early afternoon
4. Most important of all... I just had this feeling a rattler encounter was in store for me.

And everything worked out perfectly... about halfway through Moon Rock Trail (wrapping up the west end of my figure-8 loop) there's my rattler, spread across the trail in warming-up mode. I was going too fast to stop so tightened my turn just enough to miss running over it by a few inches.

I stopped, set the bike down and walked back to take some photos and hopefully a bit of video. I was a little disappointed the rattler had not warmed up fully so it was lethargic. Ok, for photos but not so much for video, but I shot one anyway.

Took the family over to Usery Park to get a quick few miles in before the Steelers played the night game. The weather is nice enough these days that we can stay very close to home in the desert in order to hike in a comfortable temperature. From the horse staging area, we hiked out a mile and a half on the Pass Mt. Trail to the east, turned back, and then did a loop of the Cat Peaks, Cat Peaks Pass, and Blevins Trails. We hiked up Cat Peaks Pass twice just to get some extra mileage in. My wife headed back on the Pass Mt. Trail while I took the kids on the extra part of the hike because her hip has been bothering her. Natasha's ankle was starting to hurt her around the fifth mile, but she made it through ok and wasn't sore later on. Didn't see much in the way of wildlife.

Second part of my "Daily Double". Wanted to get a run in after my climb of Stewart Mountain and, at the same time, cross another trail off my "get er dun" list. Started off from the McKellips TH. I did a counterclockwise loop hitting the following trails. Levee - Channel - Nighthawk - Blevins - Cats Peak - Blevins - Noso - Channel - Levee. Sounds like a lot, but most of the trails I did were just partials. My main goal was to knock off the Cats Peak while getting a decent run in. It's ironic how one can "christen" (bloody) a trail. Usually when I do it, it involves tripping over a rock and going down on hands and knees. I discovered a new way today. In my run today, I came up on some horses and in an effort to maintain my pace and still yield to them I cut across the desert. And in doing so ran into a barrel cactus. Don't ask how....it wasn't easy. But let me tell you. Those guys are SOLID! I didn't go down, but when I got back on trail I took a moment to inspect the damage. My calf had blood running down it and I had a couple of thorns imbedded in my calf. I pulled out one that was easily 1/4 of an inch into my calf. From there I jogged on and still made a good time on my run. You'll be happy to know that the barrel cactus was not harmed in the encounter, though my calf has swollen up a little.
