I was braking in a new pair of shoes and the fit wasn't quite right. And I was feeling pretty sluggish so I cut this out and back up the Bursera Trail short. 2.7 miles in 70 minutes with 560 feet of AEG. It was 71 degrees when I started at 7:10 and 78 when I finished.

It's been a while since I hiked up Lost Mine. It didn't get any flatter. On to Goat Hill. Back via the connector to Bursera. :)

Pecos Rd/202 is coming along. Won't be long before it's smooth sailing to get to the trail head. Nice morning. Had aspirations to do something longer, but lacked gumption. :)

Thursday morning sweatfest. Looked like parts of SoMo got plenty of rain last night, which knocked a few degrees off our starting temperature. Still felt like Florida though. Partway up Bursera, Denny started talking about this being perfect weather to see snakes. I told him about some genius I encountered recently who told me that I’d never actually seen a speckled rattler on SoMo, that they were all tigers and I just didn’t know the difference.

Drenched in sweat on the way up Bursera, the few spots of shade on the descent were a relief. Once heading back east on Gila, full sun and no breeze made for a tough walk up to the saddle. New sign at the saddle closing off the connector trail to National that I really liked. The descent back down felt a lot better. Dropping into the wash, we got a courtesy rattle. After several seconds of looking around, Denny spotted a healthy looking tiger. We got a few pictures as he moved around some rocks and tree roots. Easy hike back to the cars after that, especially once the breeze picked up. Great hike & great company!

Linda let me join her for a nice mid morning hike. Hiking with Linda and after a rain storm.Chances high for a snake encounter :o . I was hoping for some leftover clouds but nope. Climbing Bursera was a sweat fest but I felt ok. When climbing Bursera the heat and thick air felt like I had to push through it. Linda had told me about a guy questioning her about seeing Speckled Rattlesnakes here and hinted they may be Tigers :) . :D Speckled is about all I see on this end and have never seen a Tiger here although I know her and JohnLP see both. So wouldn't you know we have a Tiger give us a little shake so I see my first South Mountain Tiger Rattlesnake :y: . After the short visit a breeze picked up and we strolled back to the trailhead. The recycle can at the trailhead blew over last night so Linda and I did our good deed and picked it all up :D . Great hike and company! Thanks Linda, you rock!

We decided to do another night hike since the moon was just past full. Started out on the Bursera trail, jumped onto the National, and took the Pyramid trail back to the trailhead to complete a nice 10 mile loop. Started out at about 8:30pm, and got back to the car about 1:30am. Didn't see anyone the entire hike. It was great! (but still hot~!)

Goat Hill! Been a while. Nice breeze/wind for most of the hike. Then the wind died and temps soared into the mid eighties. Pretty nice for August. :)

I told Denny the weather would be nice today. I lied. After cheerfully dumping my kids off at the gate of their school the second it opened, I headed over to the Pyramid trailhead and met Denny at the promised time of 7:30. We headed up Bursera. Felt like we were swimming at times. Not many other people out. I wonder why??? At the high point of Bursera, we took the connector down to the Gila saddle, then back up. And up. Eventually, I told Denny that once the trail passed over that next set of rocks, he’d start to hate me a little less. Once we could breathe again, Denny started talking about 30 mile hikes. Not sure if he was delirious, or if I just agreed to a death march. At the top of the connector, the trail suddenly disappeared just before it reached the Ruins trail. It’s also signed as Area Closed. That’s very new and I was bummed about that, even though I suspected it would happen soon. The hike down the Ruins trail was steep but uneventful. Once it leveled off, the last mile back to the cars was almost pleasant. Still a fun hike, and good conversation. When I floated the possibility of hiking next Thursday, Denny said he had to wash his hair—one strand at a time. I can’t wait for August to be over to start to get to more reasonable temps.

Linda had promised me running water and waterfalls. I didn’t know she meant all from my shirt! 😱 Nice mid morning hike but it was some thick air out there. I saw my first millipede of the year but only one. We earned the aeg on this one but it was good to get a hike in! Thanks Linda, you rock!

Had originally planned Humphreys for today, but a couple bottles of wine yesterday evening changed my mind. Woke up to some clouds & sprinkles this morning, so we decided to do a short loop on SoMo. The trailhead had less than 10 cars at 7:00am! Got started and headed up Bursera. Warm and muggy. I complained. Took the connector down to the saddle at Gila, then up to National where the Ruins trail meets it. A few more sprinkles up there, and a pleasant breeze, which continued as we headed east on National.

I’ve read before that with no other variables factored in, air temp cools approximately 3.5 degrees F for every 1000’ increase in elevation. I’ve always wondered if there is any noticeable difference between temps at the trailheads vs the temps along the high parts of National, or if the Phx heat overwhelms that 1000’ difference. One day, I may have to find out.

We headed down Lost Ranch Mine, which tends to be a little slow going in places with the loose rock. Cicadas galore. Then a quick mile back to the car. That last mile was hot. Only saw a few people on the trails, and 4 parked cars when we finished.

Very slow hike, since my back was killing me, but I had to take advantage of the nice weather, and it being my kids’ last full day of school, to do a decent hike. Up Bursera, took the connector to the Gila saddle, then up towards National, with a side trip to 2197. East on National, with a visit to Goat Hill, then down Pyramid and back to the trailhead. Great day!

Lucked out with the clouds today! Denny & I got started around 7:30 and headed up Bursera. Just a few other hikers in the first mile or two. After we crossed the big wash, we headed east on Gila up to the saddle, then connected back up to Bursera and took Bursera back down to the trailhead. Denny’s charm must have distracted me today, because I managed to fall twice, not so gracefully managing to avoid falling on a million dried scorpionweed each time. Nice workout loop, and good company!

Early morning hike/jog from the south side of South Mountain. Drove all the way around South Mountain (50 minutes) to start from the Chandler TH. Got there just after 5am. Gates weren't open yet so I parked along the street. Basically did a loop with two tails. Started off on the Pyramid and turned off at the Bursera junction. Took the Bursera to where it connected to the National trail. I turned around there and went back into the valley and followed the user (that parallels and is looked down upon by the Bursera Trail. I took this trail back to the Pyramid and the Pyramid back to the TH. Ram most of this ( more like jogged). The Bursera is pretty nice for running, It has some nice elevation change and is fairly smooth and easy to follow. However, there are some very brief, but sharp inclines on the ridgeline section. And the stretch that leads up to National is much more rugged with quite a bit of loose rock on the inclines. The user trail in the valley is very well defined and easy to follow. It has some elevation gain as it climbs to the saddle with moderate grade and there are several washes with steep banks. I was doing pretty well on the run until my foot caught a rock while descending from the saddle on the user trail. I discovered that there is a nice echo at that location when I expressed my frustration at my tumble. It's been awhile since I "christianed" a trail with my blood, so I guess I was due. Weather was awesome. Clear skies and 70's for most of the run. Minimal wildlife...rabbits and desert doves.

Denny and I got started a little before 7:30. Nice and cool this morning. We headed up Bursera to the connector to the Gila saddle, then up to National at the top of the Ruins trail. East on National about a mile to the turn for Lost Mine. Down Lost Mine and back to the trailhead. It started to get a little warm by the finish, but still nice for May. Great morning for a hike!

Same hike as I did yesterday, but Denny joined in for today. Definitely warmer today, but there was a nice breeze at times. Nearly full parking lot, we started behind a group of about 20 women, but they stayed on Pyramid past where we turned on to Bursera. Didn’t see many people after that. Nice day!

Linda let me join her for a hike this morning. I have been whinny about injuries lately and told myself not to whine the whole hike if I wanted to hike with her again. True to my word I only whined for 2 hours of the hike. I agree this was a good little work out hike to mix in with the others in the area. Thanks Linda, you rock!!
