Very slow hike, since my back was killing me, but I had to take advantage of the nice weather, and it being my kids’ last full day of school, to do a decent hike. Up Bursera, took the connector to the Gila saddle, then up towards National, with a side trip to 2197. East on National, with a visit to Goat Hill, then down Pyramid and back to the trailhead. Great day!

Lucked out with the clouds today! Denny & I got started around 7:30 and headed up Bursera. Just a few other hikers in the first mile or two. After we crossed the big wash, we headed east on Gila up to the saddle, then connected back up to Bursera and took Bursera back down to the trailhead. Denny’s charm must have distracted me today, because I managed to fall twice, not so gracefully managing to avoid falling on a million dried scorpionweed each time. Nice workout loop, and good company!

A nice morning hike with Linda. She ordered in some clouds and a nice breeze. Bravo!!!! Nice little workout. Linda slipped a couple times but caught herself like a pro. Not a fall if she doesn’t hit the ground. 🤔😁Nice hike. Thanks Linda, you rock!!

Early morning hike/jog from the south side of South Mountain. Drove all the way around South Mountain (50 minutes) to start from the Chandler TH. Got there just after 5am. Gates weren't open yet so I parked along the street. Basically did a loop with two tails. Started off on the Pyramid and turned off at the Bursera junction. Took the Bursera to where it connected to the National trail. I turned around there and went back into the valley and followed the user (that parallels and is looked down upon by the Bursera Trail. I took this trail back to the Pyramid and the Pyramid back to the TH. Ram most of this ( more like jogged). The Bursera is pretty nice for running, It has some nice elevation change and is fairly smooth and easy to follow. However, there are some very brief, but sharp inclines on the ridgeline section. And the stretch that leads up to National is much more rugged with quite a bit of loose rock on the inclines. The user trail in the valley is very well defined and easy to follow. It has some elevation gain as it climbs to the saddle with moderate grade and there are several washes with steep banks. I was doing pretty well on the run until my foot caught a rock while descending from the saddle on the user trail. I discovered that there is a nice echo at that location when I expressed my frustration at my tumble. It's been awhile since I "christianed" a trail with my blood, so I guess I was due. Weather was awesome. Clear skies and 70's for most of the run. Minimal wildlife...rabbits and desert doves.

Denny and I got started a little before 7:30. Nice and cool this morning. We headed up Bursera to the connector to the Gila saddle, then up to National at the top of the Ruins trail. East on National about a mile to the turn for Lost Mine. Down Lost Mine and back to the trailhead. It started to get a little warm by the finish, but still nice for May. Great morning for a hike!

Same hike as I did yesterday, but Denny joined in for today. Definitely warmer today, but there was a nice breeze at times. Nearly full parking lot, we started behind a group of about 20 women, but they stayed on Pyramid past where we turned on to Bursera. Didn’t see many people after that. Nice day!

Linda let me join her for a hike this morning. I have been whinny about injuries lately and told myself not to whine the whole hike if I wanted to hike with her again. True to my word I only whined for 2 hours of the hike. I agree this was a good little work out hike to mix in with the others in the area. Thanks Linda, you rock!!

Afternoon trail run from the Pyramid trailhead. I ran a clockwise loop of Bursera and Gila with a small segment on National.

I saw two snakes today, a dark reddish colored coachwhip in a ravine behind Bursera Peak and a speckled rattlesnake near the trailhead.

I was originally going to do the full Bursera-National-Pyramid loop, but I was feeling blah once I got started. Allergies? Tired? Dehydrated? Who knows. Once on Bursera, I decided to go up to the high point, then turn around. Once there, I decided to go down the connector to the saddle on Gila, then determine if I wanted to turn around or salvage some sort of decent hike.

At the saddle on Gila, I was feeling okay, so I continued straight north on the connector to follow the ridge up to where it meets National. I've taken this ridge before, and always just powered my way straight up and over all the rocks, which is stupid since there's a perfectly good route. Today, I stayed on the route which stays atop the ridge at first, then goes to the left of the ridge for a while, which is the steepest part. Once it curves over to the right, the steepness mellows a little, eventually nearly flattening out as it turns east across a drainage and heads up to connect with the upper part of Lost Ranch Ruins trail.

Once in the cholla & ocotillo field, I turned left at the junction with the Ruins trail and headed up to National. The route from the saddle to this point is comparable to any of the three Ruins/Mine trails, but with probably better footing. This may become my default way up to National in the future. Once on National, I headed east over to Pyramid (skipped Goat Hill today) and down Pyramid.

Along the top of Pyramid, I heard a rattler just below me in the vegetation, but I couldn't see it. It sounded just far enough away to not be an immediate threat, so I kept moving along to keep it that way. A little while later, I passed a hiker who said there was a rattler on the trail about 10 minutes behind him. I thanked him for the heads up, and let him know there was one ahead of him too. As expected, I never saw the rattler he saw. It ended up being a nice loop after all, and the breeze & relatively cool temps were good too.

Nice cool & cloudy morning. Did the loop clockwise, my preferred way. Lots of bugs, especially once the sun came out on the last mile. Quite a few people out, but I guess that makes sense for a Friday. Saw a well nourished Speckled where Pyramid passes by the east of the ridge that Bursera is on. It never rattled, even when I got close for a picture, but it was watching me for sure. I think my limit right now for hiking in sandals is about 8 miles, the 10 from today was a little too much.

Only had time for a short hike today. Headed up Bursera, and ran into the dad of one of my daughter’s classmates, so we hiked together for about 30 minutes. Solo again, I turned onto the connector that leads down to Gila at the saddle, then took Gila back east to Pyramid, then Pyramid back to the trailhead. Just before I got to the trailhead, I could see the emergency vehicles for the hiker who sustained a rattlesnake bite. The vehicles were only at the trailhead for about five minutes total; hopefully the hiker is doing okay. Another hot day. As gross as it sounds (at least to me) I wore the same wool shorts and shirt I hiked in yesterday to see if they could really go two hikes between washings without smelling bad. The answer is—yes, absolutely—in fact, I think they could go on another couple of hikes without any smell, but I’m not sure I want to try that.

Did a lollipop loop of Bursera & Gila. Took Bursera west to Gila, then Gila east up to the saddle, then up the steep connector to Bursera and east again. Most of the wildflowers are drying out, the only one that still look decent are the globe chamomile, mostly along Gila. The hedgehog cactus are blooming nicely though. Tons of grasshoppers along Gila; every step I took seemed to stir up at least ten grasshoppers. Saw a handful of people, mostly on the last mile.

Mostly drying out. Now it's time for the cactus to put on their show.

Went back down to South Mountain to hike a section of the National Trail that I had hoped to do 2 weeks earlier. This time I started closer, down by the Pyramid Trailhead. The last time I hiked the trails in this area, the parking lot wasn't there and the trails didn't have official names yet. I decided to hike up the Pyramid Trail, hike west on the National Trail, and then back on the Bursera Trail.

I started just after 6am, while it was still very dark. I used my headlamp for the first mile and a half. It was pretty chilly when I started, but hiking uphill warmed me up pretty quickly. Heading west on the National Trail I checked out the mining prospects. There were a few braids of the trail that went up over peaks along the ridgeline, which I unfortunately missed a few of.

I forgot how much elevation gain the Bursera Trail has, or else I might have taken the Gila Trail back. It was kind of cloudy after the sun was up, but soon enough the sun broke through. the last few hours were very sunny and clear. Saw a few other hikers and one or two bikers. Finished about 11am, returning to a full parking lot with cars circling, waiting for freee spots to open up.

I did a loop of the Pyramid, Bursera, National, and Lost Ranch Ruins trails. When coming down Lost Ranch Ruins Trail, I took that secondary connector trail back down to the Bursera Trail and back to the trailhead. This secondary trail was well defined and had no real exposure on it. It got steep and slippery in a few spots, but if you fell you would just have to pick which cactus you slid into. It was 55 degrees when I started and 64 when I finished on a cloudy day. The loop came in at 6.9 miles with 1,375 feet of AEG in 3 hours and 5 minutes.
