Bursrea/Pyramid loop clockwise with a stop at Goat Hill. Saw a bat, great horned owl, dead vulture, hummingbird, and coopers hawk amongst other birds. Very humid. Somo got a little more rain last night. Some cloud cover was nice. :)

Up Bursera, then back on Gila. Only saw a few people. Not too warm, but very humid, and zero breeze. Lots of rabbits today.

Oddly enough, when I got to the parking lot at 0445 this morning, there was a girl, probably 11-14 years old, sitting on the boulders at the start of the trail. Absolutely nobody else, nor any other vehicles around. She avoided me and walked away as I was starting my hike. That makes two mornings this week with weirdness at the trailhead. Monday was a red Camaro blocking access to most of the lot, parked in a way you couldn’t get around him, lights off, vehicle running. When I finished that hike 3.5 hours later, it was backed into a parking spot, but still running. A large sticker across the top of his windshield had his social media handle. A quick look at his social media showed he likes to do crappy customizations to sports cars, but nothing indicating he’s the hiking type.

Beautiful monsoon hike. Some rain, clouds, wind, and fog made for a memorable trek. Up Pyramid, over to Goat Hill, and back on Bursera. It didn't rain hard until the last half mile. :)

Arrived at the trailhead pre-dawn to a cool crisp 93 degree morning. We made it over three miles before a colorful sunrise through the smoke over Four Peaks.
Not many people on the trails today. Parking lot was only 1/3 full when we finished.
Happy Father's Day.
Thanks for the invite & hike Kelly! :)

Got started just after first light. Beautiful morning. Rayleigh scattering creating purple hues and rosy alpenglow on the Estrellas makes me glad I'm not in a gym on a treadmill.
Not too many people out on the trails. Things are finally slowing down.
Another saguaro has fallen. Seems they are rotten or diseased on the inside. Wildflowers are all but gone. Saw one scorpion weed in a shady spot. Some nice ocotillo blooms being visited by hummingbirds. I hope the desert can survive until it rains again.
Enjoyable hike. :)

Early morning jog at SoMo. Started from the Pyramid TH just after 6am. Parking lot was only half full. Did what I think of as the reverse Bursera. I took the Pyramid trail into the wash where the Gila trail starts. The Gila trail is not signed, but it a low lying trail that parallels the Bursera just to the north. There is a small saddle that needs to be negotiated. The climb on the east side is switchbacked and on the west fairly gradual so it is not too bad. Much more gentle than the Bursera. The Gila does tie into the Bursera. First I went right and did the “tail” up to the National and then I jogged back, past the Gila, and continued on the Bursera. I ended up hiking a couple of spots on the backside as these old legs couldn’t handle the terrain. As I reached the ridge line, 8 came across the new trail that drops down the south side. There was a post at this juncture with what I thought was somewhat confusing descriptors. Wasn’t too worried about since I knew what I wanted to do. I continued along the ridge line, gaining more elevation. Views were ok. But once again, air quality wasn’t as crisp as I’ve seen it. Took the Bursera down to where it connects to the Pyramid and the Pyramid back to the TH. Nice loop, with nice morning temperatures.

Met Denny at 0730 and we did an out and back on Bursera. Always a good workout since you have to go uphill both directions. The trail surface in a few places tends to be more slippery than expected—the sections they’ve “paved” with rocks tend to try to kill me. Not many people on the trail after the first half mile or so. Felt a little humid on the climb approaching National, but nice temps most of the rest of the time. More downed saguaros. As always, a good hike and conversation!

Met Linda around 7:30 for this one. Thought it might be cool but the temps were actually pretty good. Passed “ Thelma and Louise”😎 👏on our way up. Saw a couple purple flowers on way out and about 5 poppies we somehow missed on the way back. They all looked thirsty! I swear good conversation makes these double up hikes more bearable! 😁😂👏 Nice workout and good to get a hike in with Linda. Thanks Linda! Like HAZ, you rock!!

Another training hike at South Mountain, combining a couple of loops 2x each. First up was the title loop - up Pyramid, across National and around on Bursera. Then hit up Eliminator coming down Lost Ranch Mine before heading back to the TH for lunch. After lunch did the same two loops, doing the first clockwise for a different view. Was a little warm, but not too bad - will definitely have to head to higher country this Sunday. A lot of folks in the AM, not too many in the PM. I didn't bother doing the little section up to Goat Hill, so subtracted that from my estimated mileage/AEG.

Two more big trainers before the first of the two upcoming GC dayhikes.

Pyramid/Bursera loop with Ranger and Goat Hill thrown in. Temps in the 40's and cloudy to start. Didn't take long for the sun to come out. South Mountain got some decent rain from this front (I got a little over half an inch at my house). Signs of runoff on the trails and quite a few puddles still out there. Saw a few wildflowers but not as many as a couple weeks ago.
The air is very clear now. Views of the Estrellas showed a lot more detail than usual. Steam rising from Palo Verde easily visible. Great day for a hike. :)

Headed to west South Mountain this morning with Carey to check out the trail I've been eyeing up from the 202 since my first drive. Started on the Maricopa trail at Dusty Lane and the 202. Followed the trail east under the 202 and up a short 100' climb to the Ma Ha Tauk Perimeter trail. Took Ma Ha Tauk clockwise to National trail. Followed National over to Bursera. The climb up National to Bursera was intense, coming down Bursera even more so. Rode Bursera to Gila and then back to National. Backtracked on National to Ma Ha Tauk Perimeter and the truck. Saw lots of hikers and trail runners, no other bikers! Couldn't have asked for a better day on the trails!

Nice afternoon hike. Left the house about 2:30 pm. Cool and breezy when left. Up the Canyon was just the right temp. Up on the mountain the wind picked up. In fact I had to chase down my straw hat... luckily it didn't go down into the canyon. Coming back on the lower loop (unnamed) trail going west headed back home the wind was so blustery that it was almost as tiring as hiking up the Canyon. Few hikers out. Got a Birdseye view of some maneuvers by a helicopter hovering over National just above the Eliminator junction. They might have been making sure no hikers or bikers fell in the mine shaft up there. Great day for a hike!! HAPPY HIKING!!

Got started around 0830. Parking lot wasn’t that full for a Friday morning. After a quick stop at the ruins, we headed up the Ruins Trail. Steep, but the breeze helped. Side trip to 2197, then up to National.

West on National, taking our time to look at some of the mines along the trail. Heading downhill was nice, but it was already getting warm. Down Bursera, with a short side trip on Gila to look at one of the saguaros. Then up Bursera—warm, with almost no breeze. Down Bursera Canyon then east on the still unnamed “Lower Bursera” trail to connect back to the trailhead. Good hike and good conversation!
