We had a nice offer to hike in the Supes with @outdoor_lover and @tibber today but sadly had to decline due to a previous lunch engagement. We still wanted to get a hike in, so we copied a hike up Union Peak recently logged by @kingsnake. We cut a little mileage off one of his loops due to the heat and humidity. We were both experiencing "low energy" right from the start. :(

On the first hill up from the trailhead we stopped to see if the Great Horned Owl had any Owlettes yet. We saw her last year when we climbed Dixie Mountain. She was there and incubating some eggs but no babies have hatched yet. Maybe in a couple of more weeks.

The talking heads on the news say to stay away from crowds as a preventative measure against the CORVID-19 virus. This trailhead on a Sunday @ 8am was an absolute zoo so I'm fairly certain Cathy and I are now both infected. :scared:

Decent spring bloom display on the way up. Brittlebush and Lupine were the stalwarts but many others were blooming also. On the summit we witnessed quite a display of hundreds, if not thousands, of Arizona Blister Beatles. Like Ladybugs they congregate year after year in certain spots to party down and procreate. They were all having sex with one another like we weren't even there! :) Insex as Pam coined it last week on the 6L Ranch hike.

I hiked a spastic looking figure-8 that included seven trails. If you want to follow my route, see the attached route. Or you could just wing it: With all the signage in Phoenix’s city parks, you have to try to get lost. (That said, the day before a rescue chopper was airlifting some doofus off North Mountain, across from my office window.) 🤪

All the trails were in great shape!

Brittlebush predominated — as they have for the past month throughout Phoenix — but there were also some lupine along Hawk's Nest Trail.

The flowers along this short section of Dixie Mountain Loop included desert chicory, blue dick, lupine and brittlebush.

While Hawk’s Nest Trail and Dixie Mountain Loop existed when I first hiked the Phoenix Sonoran Preserve [ photoset ] , the next five trails were either under construction or in the planning stages.

The flowers along Valle Verde Trail included lupine, globe chamomile, blue dick, fiddleneck, owl clover, scorpionweed and lots of Mexican gold poppy.

Cactus Wren Trail is also rated moderate, but other than a few wash crossings was also flat. It should be rated easy. I continued to find Mexican gold poppy and scorpionweed, while the owl clover and lupine density increased. I took some really nice photos with multiple flower species mixed tightly together. 📸

Cactus Wren Trail is where I had my first rattlesnake encounter of the spring: A small, maybe 30″, western diamondback with indistinct diamonds. A retired couple, completely unaware, were resting in the shade a few yards away. That’s the thing about rattlesnakes: They are all around you, all the time, you just never realize it because they don’t feel threatened enough to make you aware of their presence.

As elsewhere throughout the Sonoran Desert Preserve, there is very little shade on Great Horned Owl Trail. I tried to make myself small under a palo verde while I swapped out water bottles.

I was tired enough I wasn’t sure I wanted to even try Union Peak Trail, but I made it. 👍

South past Deer Valley Airport, I could clearly see Camelback Mountain, Piestewa Peak, North Mountain and Shaw Butte. The only summit flowers were the sole desert globemallow of the day.

After an extended break on Union Peak, including a hiking beer — Hofbräu Dunkel — I headed back down to the saddle, then west on Great Horned Owl Trail, where I found large, dense patches of Mexican gold poppy.

On Desert Tortoise Trail, I was in no mood to take pictures or even much notice what kinds of flowers it had, other than the ubiquitous brittlebush. (Besides the climb up Union Peak, I was under-watered for higher than expected temperatures.)

Amazing views at the end. Not a bad hike, the only steep part was the climb to the peak but well worth it.

Beautiful day for a hike, about 80 degrees. The hike combines Hawk’s Nest/Valle Verde/Great Horned Owl/Union Peak/Desert Tortoise to form a double lollipop loop.

The trail allows hikers an opportunity to stretch their legs. We easily hiked at about 2.7 miles per hour. The hike starts with a farily aggresive up hill climb, but soon levels out, with some mild hills. Union Peak is the hardest with about a 265 foot climb. However, since the climb is in about .44 miles it's steep.

The trail is easy to follow, but hikers should have a map since a wrong turn at any juctions could cause problems.

Well it was a cool and windy start to this hike. Lots of cars at the trailhead but didn’t see anyone after we turned off on the Valle Verde Trail. Once we made our loop and were heading back on the Valle Verde Trail I noticed some clothes hanging on a cactus 🌵. Before I could do anything a couple came up from behind me and said it was theirs. As it warmed up they didn’t want to pack their warm clothing with them and just decided to pick them up on their way back.
Oh well.

Started out really humid so I let Rowdy take a few extra breaks.
Once we reached the top the weather really change and we both enjoy it.
The first thing that change was the wind it was a cool breeze going up but all at once it turned cold.
I knew we were in for some more changes and we got the blowing rain. And the last quarter of a mile it just dumped on us.
It has been a while since we hiked in such great weather.

After work run. Did a loop with two tails. Tail one - Hawk Nest. Then around on Desert Tortoise to Verde Valle. Tail two - south on the Verde to where it ends at the Great Horned Owl. Turned around and took the Verde all the way back to where it connects to the Dixie Mine. Took this CW back to the Hawks Nest and then back to the car. Unexciting run. But its convenient and a good workout. Weather was nice, with great temps and good cloud coverage. No wildlife. 9 hikers and 3 bikers.

First time hiking this trail. Once you get away from west and southern sections where it is mainly views of homes, this is a nice hike. Views to the east are excellent. Parked at the Sonoran Desert Trailhead and used the connector trails to get to this trail. Started early to avoid the heat. Only a few people on the trail. Did not see any owls although I thought I heard one. Maybe the mind playing tricks.
Didn't hike to the peak, so I'll have to do that another day. 8)

I've ridden here once before, but never did this route. Had a nice figure 8 set up including cactus wren and great horned owl, linked to the Dixie Mountain loop, and some connectors in there. As like most trails in the Phoenix Sonoran Preserve, the trails are in great shape.

Just a glorified dog walk with the pups. Nice temps and great late afternoon conditions. The trails were a little busy near the trailhead, but still a pleasant walk with the pups. We knocked out Dixie and Union "peaks" along the way, making our own variation of the Dixie Mountain Loop.
