Short after work jog. Did CCW loop. Hawk - Desert Tortoise - Valle - Dixie Mine and then back on the Hawk. Weather seemed pleasant though temps were around 105 while I was out. No wildlife but came across 4 other hikers while I was out.
First time hiking this trail. Once you get away from west and southern sections where it is mainly views of homes, this is a nice hike. Views to the east are excellent. Parked at the Sonoran Desert Trailhead and used the connector trails to get to this trail. Started early to avoid the heat. Only a few people on the trail. Did not see any owls although I thought I heard one. Maybe the mind playing tricks.
Didn't hike to the peak, so I'll have to do that another day.
I've ridden here once before, but never did this route. Had a nice figure 8 set up including cactus wren and great horned owl, linked to the Dixie Mountain loop, and some connectors in there. As like most trails in the Phoenix Sonoran Preserve, the trails are in great shape.
Combined trails, hawks nest, dixie loop +summit trail, valle verde, to great horned owl, to peak 2383 aka union peak. Returned same way except took desert tortoise to trailhead. Nice hike for a nice Thursday. The Ocotillo are just starting to bloom.
Just a glorified dog walk with the pups. Nice temps and great late afternoon conditions. The trails were a little busy near the trailhead, but still a pleasant walk with the pups. We knocked out Dixie and Union "peaks" along the way, making our own variation of the Dixie Mountain Loop.
Perfect day for this hike. Light cloud cover kept the sun intensity down. A couple of critical junctions are not signed and have been noted on the route I created. Saw very light traffic on this weekday morning.

Phoenix Sonoran Preserve website states that the park is open from 5am to 7pm. Got to the Desert Vista trailhead just before 6am to find a line of cars waiting for the park ranger to open the gate. Crazy humidity made today's hike with harem member Maria quite unpleasant. Someone placed a summit register at Union Peak. Creative Maria left an interesting entry with yesterday's date One of my favorite city hikes!
