Decided to hit the North Phoenix Sonoran Preserve today. Previously, I have hike the loop and Dixie Mountain, but this time I also added in the Western Vista mountain trail as well. Good elevation change and distance for a warm morning in late September. This is a good park with great scenery and low crowds. I sat at the top to catch my breath and watched the hot-air balloons land a short distance away. A great hiking option in the North Valley! Just watch out for the cholla cactus fields up here! :o

After work run at the Sonoran South Preserve. Started from the Desert Vista TH. Went up Hawk Nest, CCW on Dixie Mountain Loop and then up and back on Western Vista and then continued CCW on Dixie to the Hawk and then back to the TH. Don't care too much for the Hawk Nest. A) because I have to do it all the time from this TH as it is the only entry trail at this TH and B) because I don't like jogging up hill "out of the gate". (Though it does seem to be getting easier). The Dixie Mountain Trail is a nice jogging trail. It has just enough elevation and flat sections to challenge and to give "breathers". It is a little rocky in sections. The Western Vista is a tough climb. It sure seems like more than 200 ft elevation gain. Fairly smooth for running but has some sharp inclines that can really sap me. Jogged the whole thing. But it was more about maintaining form and keeping the feet moving than about pace. Saw one hiker on the Vista and one biker on the Hawk, otherwise had the trails to myself. Surprised though, when I got back to the TH there were 6 cars there with about 9 hikers (in varying group sizes) getting ready to hike. Temps were high (108), but a strong steady wind kept things very nice.

After five plus hours of driving to visit the Ancha on Saturday, we kept it simple and close to home on Sunday. The beautiful hiking weather made up for the stale scenery and the dogs certainly did mind the less than stellar hiking destinations. The trails were busy, but nothing to over whelming and plenty of friendly people out.

Well I got Rowdy out for nice little hike. There were so many people out today enjoying the weather.
Most of the people I talked to were visiting for Thanksgiving Holiday. So tomorrow there should minimal traffic, yes.

After work hike. I did a short in and out. From the Desert Vista TH. I went in on the Hawk's Nest, clockwise on the Dixie Mine Loop and then UP the Western Vista. Definitely one of the shorter, steeper trails out there. Then back the way I came. Saw two trail runners and a chipmunk. Weather was warm, but not too bad as long as there was a breeze.

Laura and I climbed all three peaks in the Phoenix Sonoran Desert Preserve, starting with Western Vista then Dixie Mountain and finally Union Hills Peak (which I liked the best). This was my first time in the area and could definitely see myself going back. Nice new facilities at the Desert Vista trailhead.

What a beautiful day to get Rowdy back on the trails. It was pretty quiet as I did run into one small group of people that were on a guided hike.
I did see more types of wildflowers today and I did see but did not get a picture of my first snake of the year. It was a fast moving Patchnose snake.
And coming down the Hawk's Nest Trail a Great Horned Owl has move into the old nest.
It was a really nice hike just what Rowdy needed.

Ah, makeup hike for the week. Almost as good as makeup, well... you get the idea. ;) I had to get in something close to home, but I wanted some miles so this was my solution. I saw the track from the Eagle, I did that loop with a few modifications. Started out from the TH heading clockwise, I hit the Western Vista first, then over to Dixie for a little break. Surveyed the surrounding mountains, and watched some of the construction to the north. After a snack, I headed on over to Union Peak, I took the old jeep road up the east side, and then the short scramble over to the peak trail. Back on to the truck, saw a good two dozen hikers and 6 bikers all day, not too shabby. They are building a bathroom with water at the TH, should be pretty nice in a month or so.

I wanted to go to Anthem today so stopping off to hike the Sonoran Preserve was an excellent choice. It's been quite a while since I've hiked here and it's a quick off/on I-17. I didn't really have a plan in mind when I started other than enjoying being outside for a few hours on a perfect day.

RS briefly stopped again today, this time on the ascent to peak 2383, but worked fine on the way back down. I suspect it's nothing to do with the app, more likely is that I've burdened my phone with too many running apps and when adding stopping every 100 ft for photos, somethings got to give. I'll start to unload running apps (other than RS of course), and see if the issue can be resolved. It's a modest loss of distance and AEG, so no big deal if not.

The register at Peak 2383 was signed and a plug for HAZ was included! Newer container, note book and pencils - thanks to the responsible party! A new restroom is being built (they were working today even) at the trailhead, should be completed soon. I'll pick through the 75 photos from today and upload a few. In all, the trails were pretty quiet today, maybe 15 hikers and 2 dozen mtn bikers. Excellent day to be outside! Cheers.

Quick hike before heading to the airport. Trails were moderately busy this morning. Nice views from the two summits.

Bagged Dixie Mountain and Peak 2090 on my last hike of the year. Pretty nice loop. Funnily enough IMO Peak 2090 is more difficult than Dixie Mtn at 2277 feet.

I noticed this area posted on HAZ a few months ago and have been meaning to get out here. The trails are ok, mostly once you get past the views of the surrounding subdivisions. The weather wasn't too hot today in the morning, but that will soon change in the coming months.

I started from the Desert Vista Trail TH on the south end and took the Hawk's Nest Trail to the Desert Tortoise Trail, then did a section of the Valle Verde Trail (mainly to add mileage), then back NW to the Dixie Mt. Loop Trail, did the Dixie Summit, out and back on the Bobcat, summited again on the Western Vista Trail, and headed back to the trailhead. The little spur trails on the west end join private trails for the NorTerra subdivision. I walked a few yards on one of those to check it out and then headed back to the preserve.

At the east end on the Valle Verde Trail I saw some mountain bikers who told me there was a rattlesnake further up. I looked but I couldn't find it. on my way back west to the Dixie Mt. Loop Trail, a mountain biker was coming the other way and actually stopped and yielded the trail to me until I passed. WOW! :o :) : app : . I have NEVER seen that before. Kudos, sir.

This area really didn't have too many people. Lots of cars when I arrived at 6:15am, 3 left when I was done at 10:30am. the area isn't to overrun by bikers, and I saw more hikers than trail runners. Looking forward to going back to finishing the trails in this area and then the north area.
