I can't believe it has been almost 6 years since I've been out here.

#1 change from last time, there is an actual trail around Picketpost now... and a nice one.

Going clockwise on this loop, we enjoyed the morning light in Arnett Creek for some decent views. On the NE portion of this loop, we took a side trip on a portion of the LOST trail, attempting to find the Apache Tears area. No luck this time.

Back on the Picketpost Loop, to switch it up a bit, Joe tied in part of a @kingsnake route, taking us up to Hill 3464. Decent views from up there.

Rock Tank was full from the recent rains and big enough for a Kayak trip.

We attempted to get to the top of Picketpost on the way back, but were running short of daylight.

Fall colors should be good for the next couple of weeks on this loop.

Occasionally I volunteer my vehicle and time to shuttle hikers from a parking lot where their vehicle has been parked to a point where their hike is to begin. Well, today was one of those times. I followed up on a shuttle request that was posted on the HAZ Forum requesting a ride from Kelvin, where the vehicle was parked, to Picketpost, where the trip was to begin. The three person group from Colorado was going to hit the AZT on mountain bikes.

The bikes and trail gear was dropped off at Picketpost then we drove the vehicles to the AZT trailhead at Kelvin where the driver parked then jumped into my truck for the return. All went well until I missed a turn at Kelvin which chewed up a few minutes and miles ](*,) but we made up the time on the way back :D

I had gotten to the Picketpost area quite early as my Verizon cell phone had dropped an hour putting me an hour early for our meetup, so I took advantage of the darkness to get some early morning sunrise shots of the corral and windmill. The sky was too cloudy for good sunrise color but the weather was nice and the early birds were singing. :)

I stayed around the Picketpost trailhead until the group headed down the trail then left for home. Hope you guys have a good trip.

Bobby Rocket Feet agreed to my last minute plan and met me at Picketpost at 7:45. BrunoP lead the way with Blanco and Cup just slightly more apprehensive in the absence of their dear leader. We made the short detour up to Picket Mill for a quick swim and some hydration.

I was happy to see that Telegraph and Arnett are full of brilliant color, the highlight of the day. The trip from Arboretum Tank back to the TH was much shorter than I had anticipated, and we were back at the car by 11:15. BrunoP found random things to bark at while we enjoyed some leftover turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and sweet potatoes along with a delicious beer before heading our separate ways.

Sometimes I'm the last to hear about plans that BrunoP and Chumley make. They exchange text messages and pm's and then Bruno says "I forgot to tell you but we're meeting Chumley and a few friends tomorrow". So I send a text to Chums to confirm and we were off.

I had low expectations for this hike but it turned out to be a winner. :y: Telegraph Canyon and Arnett Creek areas were super cool. I had no idea there would be so much water and color out there. A few cottonwoods were on display along with a Sycamore that really caught my eye. The palms were an added bonus and totally unexpected. The large swatches of Oleander were also a pleasant surprise and a WTH.

Overall, this turned out much better than I imagined. Thanks for the Dale's and leftovers.

The dogs got along well on the trail but had a few scuffles at the TH while trying to sniff each other.

BrunoP had some sore pads at the end of the day. It usually happens transitioning between water and rocks/sand/dirt. It also happens in combo snow and trail hikes.

Fourth annual New Years Eve hike with Denny. Joey joined us also.
I have a bunch of the "Popular" hikes I need to do, and I was finally able to knock the Picketpost Summit off the list. The circumference around Picketpost was an added bonus.

From the TH, it's hard to believe this can actually be climbed. Following two experienced Picketpostians, this should be a piece of cake. Well we made it up using the wrong "Right" route. Left is the preferred route going up, as the route we took would be slick going down.

Enjoyed the views up top, took the
obligitory New Years photo :next: http://hikearizona.com/photo=383571 and started back down.

On the way down ran into a couple of HAZ lurkers, Louie and Dan that were excited to meet "The Hike Arizona Boys". Joe Bartels, Tortisehiker, and...can't remember your screen name. So for 2014, I've officially become The Eagle

The rest of this hike, once down, went CCW around Picketpost, through Telegraph Canyon and Arnett Creek. This is a real sweet area that I'm surprised does not get more traffic. The trip around is about 9.25 miles with minimal elevation gain. The riparian areas blew me away.

Thanks for another sucessful New Years hike Denny and Joe!

Happy HAZ Year to all.

Now... I have a list that I need to get back to for this year.

My last chance to get out with Bruce and Joe before the New Year. Bruce put this together. We went up the right side and came down the other right side :D . The mailbox was pretty full. The views were great today. On the way down we ran into a couple guys that knew HAZ well and how to use it but were not posters. This part of the hike would make for a nice hike in itself. From there we got to reminisce as we hiked a little section of the AZT. The rest of the way around the mountain was new to me. It turned out to be a pretty cool area with some nice riparian areas and cool rock formations. The weather was awesome too. Great hike and Bruce and Joe were a blast to hike with as always. Thanks Gents and have a safe and Happy New Year! :y:

Did this hike following a Picketpost summit hike. Went about a mile past the end of the official gps track, which puts you on Telegraph Canyon Rd. I didn't see the Apache Tears mine. Not sure exactly where it is. Also went almost a half mile further on the AZT past the fork. Not much new to see though. Checked out some of the mines up on the west side of the wash on the way back. Some cool stuff there. Decent amount of wildflowers still around, even some poppies. Foxtail and gnats are nasty.
