Fun stop to check out the canyon on my way back to Vegas. Short and sweet hike- convenient if you are in the area, but not worth going too far out of your way to check it out.

Easy hike for the kids. We parked at the 3 Island parking area and headed west on Owl Canyon trail. The first 100’ or so of the trail is the steepest part of the entire hike. Once you drop down from the parking area, the rest of the hike is easy. We followed the trail generally west for about a third of a mile, where it turned to the south-southwest and headed up the canyon. We didn’t see any owls, but there were nests, feathers, droppings, etc, everywhere in the canyon. After about a mile or so, we went through the first tunnel and continued heading up the canyon. After the second tunnel, the canyon widened a lot and we continued to follow it upstream, where it did narrow again. Before the tunnels, the canyon walls were mostly conglomerate, and after the tunnels, the canyon became more volcanic looking, with lots of green and purple rocks.

We turned around at 2 miles and headed back downstream. Shortly before finishing, we made a detour down to the lake shore, where the kids had a snack. After that, we headed back up to the parking areas, and followed the road back a short distance to the lot where we had parked.

Not the most exciting hike, but the kids enjoyed it. The geology and scenery made it entertaining enough as an easy stroll, but it’s not a hike I would be interested in doing very often. The area around the lake had a lot of trash, but it was better once in the canyon. Cooler & breezy today, but comfortable in a long sleeve shirt.

Hike up White Owl Canyon to get in some outdoor time today.
Cloudy skies made for pretty good lighting for a few pictures. The lighting also brought out some previously-unnoticed color in the rock. Saw some interesting "Christmas rock" - green on the interior, red on the exterior.

The main draw here is the nice narrows with lots of sign of owl activity. This would be an interesting place to be at dusk! Hiking through the culverts under the road and River Mountain loop trail was an odd feeling - the echo was eerie.

It was well worth continuing up past the narrows. The wash opens up, but the volcanic material that makes up the sides displays numerous colors, and there are plenty of caves, pillars, and arches to hold your attention. Without food for an all-day hike, I just turned around at an arbitrary time and headed back.

Weather could not have been more perfect. Only saw 2 other people when I was hiking out. One raven, who kept following me and raining small rocks down toward me. Odd behavior since I didn't see any young. :?

Note for the hike: when you reach the Y in the canyon (before crossing under the road), bear left. Going right takes you up a steep and not very scenic branch of the wash.

Led 6 hikers through this canyon. Saw a Coyote, and glimpses of an owl.

Just a quick hike to stretch my legs on a Saturday afternoon. Really neat short hike that includes a slot canyon, a natural bridge, and owl pellets ready for your inspection!
