Started from the 104th St TH, Nice & breezy all the way up to Bell Pass, no breeze at all on the east side of the pass. Made my way up to Thompson Peak, then back down. Saw a few people, but not really all that many. Warm for the last few miles. Lots of flowers all along the trails.

With the late kickoff for the Steeler game, I took the family out for another hike up in Scottsdale to do some sections of trails that I haven't done yet. Just as we started along the Saguaro Trail, I heard someone coming up behind us say "Darth Stiller". I turned around and saw @trekkin_gecko. Nice to meet you Kelly, and nice to see another HAZ member out on a hike.

It was sunny to start, but by the time we ended it was a bit hazy and cloudy. We did the Gateway Loop Trail clockwise, but then took the Paradise Trail down to the Levee trail on our way back to mix it up a bit and get a little more mileage. I also did a couple spurs just to map them out on my GPS while the family went ahead to the next trail junction.

Just as we were about to finish, we started talking to a horse rider coming the other direction. It turns out she actually knew a few words in Serbian since she used to be a teacher and taught some refugees from Bosnia a few years back. The horse let out a few snorts that startled Dmitri a little bit, but he was ok.

Finished up before noon and got lunch on the way home. Nice day out with the family hike, although much less intense than hike Battleship Mt. last weekend.

Daniela and I got started from the 104th St trailhead around 6:15am. Headlamps were needed for the first few minutes, and Daniela & I shed our jackets within the first mile. We headed east on Levee, north on Paradise, east on Gateway Loop, then east on Bell Pass, and over to Prospector, then the road up to Thompson Peak. The steepness of that road always kills me. We had a nice snack break at the top, then headed back down. Only saw a few people all day, other than the usual traffic along Gateway Loop. Did not see a single biker, which was surprising. A little warm for the last few miles, but overall a great day. We finished up around 11:30, and, as promised, I had Daniela home by lunchtime.

First time on this peak, for me. Started with Linda and Daniela at around 615am. 55 degrees at the start, but warmer air awaited as we got out of the low spots. I enjoyed the gradual uphill to Bell Pass. We were in the sun after that, but it felt nice out for late spring. Very dry out there, right now. We hit the road walk portion and pushed through the couple of steep sections. We enjoyed the breeze and had a snack on the summit. Skies were a little hazy and lacking clouds. Views of the Mazzies were clear, though. On our trip back down, we crossed paths with a few others heading up, but there wasn't a ton of traffic on the trails. We returned the way we came and made it home before lunch. Nice hike and decent gain, close to town.

Starting at 104th St TH we got late start 9am but with forecast high of only 85 we were not too concerned. Headed over to Bell Pass Trail and then down Prospector to Thompson Peak. We took a break on Thompson Peak and with all the dust/haze we didn't have much of a view....definitely the worst I've seen it in a while. Then down Thompson to Dixie Mine Trail to Coachwhip to Windmill and finally East End Trail. After already climbing Bell Pass and Thompson this one hurt a bit but we took another break at the top to refuel and recover. Then down Tom's Thumb and over to Gateway Loop Trail for the final stretch back to 104th St. Aside from the dust and haze it was solid loop hike in the McDowell's!

In keeping with the yearly goal of more peaks, more unique hits, and more miles, I decided to head out here. Wow. That last road is no joke. It felt never ending with a steepness I don't remember experiencing elsewhere. I think the paved portions make it seem like it isn't as steep as it is but holy crap.

I was going to attempt this last weekend but decided to do the loop around Tom's Thumb. I am glad I chose to follow lindaagm's route as it shaved a few miles off of the one I was going to use. I was gassed by the end.

I wanted something with decent mileage & aeg, but not too far of a drive, so I headed up to Thompson Peak with Daniela. We got started around 7:00 to cool temps & cloudy skies. Saw a handful of people on the way up to Bell Pass, then nobody after that for a few miles. We saw one mule deer while on Prospector Trail. As soon as we hit the road for the peak, the clouds disappeared and we had full sun--ugh. I whined my way up to the top, where as soon as we sat down for a snack, the clouds returned and stayed with us for the rest of the hike.

The return was quiet and uneventful, but I had warned Daniela that as soon as we hit Bell Pass, it would be a zoo--and I was right. We made friends with a large group of friendly mountain bikers who were doing some sort of training, and we also managed to make another biker blush, so we had a successful day all around.

Did Gateway loop from 104th Street and added in Saguaro Loop on the way round. Got there just before 5AM and was in the shade for all but the last 15 minutes. Feels hot out already!

a quick between travel hike thanks to the temps being low enuf to get an after work hike in from 104th St clockwise on the Gateway Loop and then over on the Crosscut to Levee Trail.

A lovely day out. I wanted to get a good pace and it looks like I did altho I wonder about the mileage being a little off as HAZel didn't keep up with me the first bit. I did the adjustment in the Cloud when I loaded it to avoid the straight line but being as it didn't record, I'm thinking it missed 1/3-1/2 mile. I went thru the trip logs to see if anyone had done the loop like I had to get the correct mileage but to no avail. I'll have to try the route officially and make sure HAZel is with me the entire way. You just can't have anything else running unless you make sure to re-touch RS.

Anyway, not many folks out including no poop fairy to pick up the blue plastic bags. I did see a couple bike riders. As I came around on the south side heading west, the lingering palo verde's blooms was a sweet sight. It was good to get out instead of being stuck with going to the gym. I'm heading to Montana tomorrow. Sad thing is all my Iris are budding for the first time in 7 years and I'll miss getting to see them bloom all at one time; but at least I got to see a couple of the blooms.

Sorry that I haven't been able to keep up with everyone's trip logs and pictures. I feel bad as I know I'm missing a lot. I have to settle with the Comments and HAZ Forum for now and an occasional photo set and trip log. Now I'm off to Montana to hopefully close out the condo my dad was living in so I'll have one less thing to occupy my time.

Happy Trails.

Decided to hit Thompson Peak from the Bell/104th St trailhead. Got kind of a late start for me--a little after 9:30. Hardly any people on the trails, and the weather was really nice. Seeing the snow covered mountains to the east once I got over Bell Pass was nice too. There were a few people near the top, but none for the few minutes I was up there. Put on more sunblock, then headed back down. There were more people on the west side of Bell Pass on my way back down, but still not very many.

One last hike to round out the year. Took the family up to Flagstaff yesterday to play in the snow, figured that earned me a hike day. It has been three years since I did this one last, it is the only named MSP peak I have not gotten in this year. Hit the 104th trailhead about 7:15 to start my day before the sun was up. Didn't see much of the sun until I hit Bell Pass. Made my way in good time up and over. I took the cairned shortcut slownsteady mentioned, nice way to skip a bit of the road walk. Needed a few breaks getting up the tower road, just as steep as I remember it. There was a worked up top moving some heavy equipment around, he seemed none to happy to see me despite giving him a friendly hello...I got stuck behind him for a bit of the downhill as he maneuvered a skid steer down the really steep part of the road. Took one last break at Bell Pass again, then on back to the truck. Saw just a few folks in the morning, but quite a few on Bell Pass and Gateway on the way back. This makes 82 different peaks for 2015, surprised myself that I managed to get that many in without driving to every corner of the state. Happy New Year all!I

Relatively quick morning hike. I started from Gateway around 7:15am and headed for Tom's Thumb. It was cold and windy but I was comfy in my fleece and shorts. Along the way I saw a few deer and javalina. I topped out and connected down the East End trail and continued over Bell Pass and headed back for the trailhead. A lot of people were starting their hike on my return. I was glad for the early start. As I neared the trailhead I detoured over to the 104th St / Equestrian Bypass trail. This way has little to no traffic and puts you out on south end of Gateway. Good option on a busy holiday weekend.

My initial plan was to head out to the McDowell's and do this trail while incorporating the Gateway Loop. Well, I didn't get out there until 4:50pm and there was a nice sign at the trailhead warning that any vehicles at the lot past 5:20 had the chance of getting a ticket because the park closed at 5:20. :( The likelihood of that happening was probably very slim, but the threat was very really. Knowing my luck, I decided to do an abbreviated version. I really wanted to do 104th Street Trail and cross it off my "get 'er done" list. So I took the104th to the Gateway Loop Trail and took that counterclockwise until I came upon the Paradise Trail. I took the Paradise for about .3 miles until it intersected with the Levee Trail, which I took back to the 104th and then back to the car. Got back to the car around 5:30 (no ticket) with the sun already setting. This means it would have a dark jog around Gateway. Not ideal even with a headlamp. So it probably was for the best that I didn't do it. I imagine I would have "christianed" the trail. While jogging, I saw one of the reasons that they are trying to enforce a curfew - a deer. "At night, the preserve is for the creatures." I get it. Just an FYI the entry into the parking for the 104th Street TH has become very eroded. I bottomed out badly as I drove over the curb and onto the dirt lot. Drive cautiously as you leave the pavement.

Oh, this one has been on the to do list for quite a while. My wife had something going with the kids this morning, so this gave me a chance for the rare Saturday hike. I got over to the 104th street trailhead about 7:20 to start off for the day. I usually like using the smaller lot so I can avoid the Gateway crowd as much as possible...Uneventful trip to Bell Pass, made it there in 1:09 without any breaks, I am pretty happy with that. Here is where the trip started getting interesting. I basically followed Trekkin' Gecko's track up the east side of McDowell. The scramble was better than I anticipated, there are lots of things to poke you, but the footing is pretty stable all considered. The genus Cylindropuntia (Chollas) is well represented out here for sure...Topped out on McDowell and started the traverse to Drinkwater. I stayed on the ridgeline and had no problem making my way across, if you have done Camelback from the Cholla side this is no big deal. I took a break on Drinkwater to enjoy the views, and then started my way back around. Instead of summiting McDowell again I thought I would skirt around the west and south face, pretty sure this did not speed the process and might have taken longer in retrospect. Found my line to head back down to the Pass again and then hightailed it to the truck. Brought 3 liters and ran dry right as I got on the Levee trail fro the return, plenty of water back at the truck. I have now officially climbed all 5 of the bigger peaks in the MSP, woo hoo. Great hike!

P.S., Has anyone ever seen the purported bicycle patrol threatening to ticked off-trail hikers in the MSP? I have hiked out there at least a dozen times (both on and off trail) and have never seen these guys. Has anyone else???
