Did Tom's Thumb Trail up to the base of the thumb, then back to the car, which is a nice 4.4 miles round trip, but I needed to complete 6.2 miles (10K), so I tacked on a little bit of Feldspar Trail, the equestrian trail, and Marcus Landslide Trail. I parked at 6:45am just as the lightning and rain were ending. There were no other cars in the parking lot!! I had the area all to myself for about an hour. It was so glorious with the fresh rain, chirping birds, moving clouds. I even saw a Desert Grassland Whiptail (Aspidoscelis uniparens) trying to warm up in the middle of the trail. Typically they are wicked fast, but this little one was cold and slow enough that I was able to catch it. The trail was eroded and washed out in a lot of the switchbacks section. Volunteers put in sooo much hard work to maintain the trail for our enjoyment and use. Don't forget to thank them when you see them!

After several weekends away I wanted something short and close to home. This fit the bill perfectly. I was on trail around 7:15am and headed up. A handful of people were out and temps were very pleasant. I hit the Toms Thumb turnoff and powered my way up and skipped the thumb and headed directly for the East End Trail. From there I dropped down into the valley and connected over the Bell Pass Trail. The last few miles blurred by and I opted to return on the equestrian bypass. This avoids the crowds. I was all done around 11am and then headed home.

Easy going late afternoon hike with John. Very quick miles and then we rewarded ourselves to some yummy tacos and chips at JJ's.

Relatively quick morning hike. I started from Gateway around 7:15am and headed for Tom's Thumb. It was cold and windy but I was comfy in my fleece and shorts. Along the way I saw a few deer and javalina. I topped out and connected down the East End trail and continued over Bell Pass and headed back for the trailhead. A lot of people were starting their hike on my return. I was glad for the early start. As I neared the trailhead I detoured over to the 104th St / Equestrian Bypass trail. This way has little to no traffic and puts you out on south end of Gateway. Good option on a busy holiday weekend.

Family hike to knock out the equestrian bypass trail and made a loop with a trail that IS shown on the white paper map of the Southern region - - but actually the City really must not want people on it. There were cactus bones laid out across the old ranch trail to allow for revegetation.

So we got a little lost finding it as the revegetation process has been effective!! But City needs to take the segment off the paper trail if they don't want people on it. It's not on the digital aerial photo maps at least.

Anyway - the Equestrian bypass is perfect for contrasting barrel cactus from saguaro. There's even one super-cool 8) barrel GROWING out of the root of a saguaro (see photo set).

We all wore our bathing suits under our hiking clothes and went from the trail to our community pool for heated winter swimming and then little hot tub time. We have never gone swimming in the winter -- how crazy is that? Kids were so excited. :GB:

Quick morning hike just to get some miles in. Started from the Gateway TH and made a clockwise loop with a quick summit of 3515. I returned on the Equestrian Bypass Trail and this is a great way to avoid the busy part of the Gateway TH. I'll use this on all future hikes in this area.

After work hike. I knew these spur trails in the McDowell foothills wouldn't be too exciting so I brought along my lizard net to work on my gummo skills. Most of the lizards were too fast for me, but toward the end of the hike I came across one that allowed me to get really close. Swoosh! Got 'em! Of course, when I looked down into the net I saw two objects squirming around; the lizard and his tail. I know lizards can regrow their tails, but I still felt bad. What if he needs that tail to escape a real predator? Maybe I don't have the heart for lizardnapping...

Since I was so far from home and the Pinnacle trail was such a short hike I thought I would do this small trail in the McDowells while I was in the neighborhood. The Equestrian Trail is more of an access trail to other trails than a stand alone trail. (It's only .25 miles long). Since I didn't want to do anything too long I decided to do a loop involving the 104th St. trail and the trail to the underpass. I got this idea by looking at the map provided at the TH. I had done all these trails before, except I had never done the "underpass trail" (not its official name, just a description) which takes off from the juncture of the 104th St trail and the Levee trail. I was surprised that this documented trail had gotten so little use. In fact, when I got on that portion of the trail, it looked as if they were actively discouraging people from using it. I was constantly stepping around branches and brush. Not a big deal, I just thought it was a bit of a mixed message.

At the start of the hike I saw a roadrunner with a lizard in its beak, standing on a branch 10 feet from me. I was not fast enough with my iPod/camera to get a shot, but it was a nice start to the hike. I thought I had just missed the epic battle of bird vs. lizard. Ironically, 30 minutes later, as I was driving out of the park, I saw that same roadrunner with the lizard still hanging out of its beak. Makes me wonder how long that roadrunner is going to run around with that lizard.

Two part hike to get track data. For the purposes of this triplog, I used the co-ordinates for the start of the Equestrian Bypass start area as the "Lat/Lon".
