Went to this TH to check the trail as lot of the trail had been in water since our last storm. Water is very very slowly receding. I photographed 2 new birds. But sadly conservancy didn't accept them as they don't see this water tank as part of the preserve even though the trail is part of the conservancy. As it got warmer, saw tons of butterflies by the abandoned cement road section.

Brief hike before class on human history of Mcdowells. Met 2 women who also like to be stewards and are on wait list for this month :y: . Always welcome new people to stewardship hood :D
Wildflowers are starting. Hopefully will see butterflies soon although I don't see them at this TH.

Due to time constraints, went to this TH today. Freezing cold gave me some beautiful shots of frost. I think I photographed a western meadowlark. If I did, it is my first :y:
Seeing lot of dogs off leash here :o

Due to time constraints, stopped at WWTH for a quick hike. Saw healthy looking coyotes which is reassuring. Saw yellow throated warbler and a northern rough winged swallow. Lot of dogs are off leash.

This was seriously the most annoying "hike" I've experienced in ages. To knock off some ATC segments, I had to take the Quartz up to West World and connect to Taliesin. All of these, of course, feature nothing more than golf cart paths and people's backyards.

To top it off, my dog Trixie and I encountered a hiker who had a large vicious dog that she was almost unable to control. As we crossed paths, her dog lunged at Trixie while snarling and the hiker had to all but tackle her to keep her from getting away. As a first-time dog owner, I now understand what people mean when they talk about what they would do if someone attacked their beloved little family member. If that dog had gotten away and come at us, I would have attempted to kill it unless it backed off. How exactly, I'm not sure. Maybe it's time to start packing.

Although I detest this footpath (I refuse to call it a trail), it will forever have a place in my life story because it's the first ever hike I took my new dog Trixie on. I chose it to knock off a random segment needed for the MSP ATC.

I learned many things from this experience. That Trix Mix (as my daughter calls her) loves hiking. That she has rocket propellers or something that shoot her into the air when she sees a lizard. That she thinks she can catch a quail. That she has not yet learned that leaping blindly into a desert bush is often a bad idea. That I should probably get a stronger leash.

Here's to thousands of miles ahead of us, Trix Mix.

I think DC ranch has done wonderful job of planting wildflowers and have admired them every spring as I drive through the area regularly. Decided to stop by and take pictures today. They also have a beautiful pond with nice enclosures for wildlife too. Nice area to go back to if I want to play with Macro lens. Saw lot of milkweed there. Nice area to visit when monarchs migrate but I don't know when that would be.
I also stopped at west world TH for few minutes so the early photos are from there.

Well this one wasn't very interesting. The most memorable part of the trip was convincing the parking attendant at WestWorld to let me drive through the facility to reach the trailhead. I told him I was on official business with "one of the radio stations hosting the event". Don't ask me what the event was... The hike was flat, boring and paved in sections. At least it was over quickly.

Decided to do the entire WW trail just once. Started at the TH and went all the way to cactus and back. The trail is as boring as described in previous trip logs. Highlight was Cooper's hawk. It was at my eye level and I did not even see it until it made sounds :o overcast day and hardly anyone on the trail.

After dropping my daughter off at school, decided to go to this TH as it is one minute drive from her school. Today's theme is flocks.
First I saw a flock of lesser finches. Then a flock of mallards. Then out of nowhere came rosy faced lovebirds. Then a flock of great tailed grackles came and chased them away.
Great weather and a great hike. Not as many wildflowers or butterflies here.

Mountain biked this morning. Really, is West World Trail even a "trail"? Maybe "jogging and beginner-level mountain biking path" would be more accurate. And even that's misleading. For even a beginner mountain biker like myself, this was very unentertaining. It might be a good place to teach my 9-year old how to ride her new bike off-road.

[Edit. By my calculation, I've completed about 52.3 of the 133 miles (39%) in the MSC All-Trails Challenge.]

Continue to hike trails in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve to complete all 133 miles. Parked at Trailhead off McDowell Mountain Rd and hiked the 3.2 trail out and back with a few short side spurs. While this trail is urban in nature it was quieter than I imaged as much of the trail has the canal on one side and a golf course on the other. Reminded me of the many trails in the SF Bay Area that were along powerline right of way (as this one was) and abandoned railroad land.

126 of 133 miles completed.

ATC challenge update: 123.9/133.4

I worked in the hospital this weekend so not up for any big hikes. But needed to finish up the rest of West world trail. Perfect family hike. We've lived in MMR neighborhood since 2007 and have never explored this WW "trail". More like an urban path than a trail. But we did see plenty of joggers and bike riders. We were the only people wearing backpacks LOL.

Started from Quartz trail parking area across from Kindercare. Took Quartz to West World. Side trail lined with big rocks that neighborhood kids must have made. Connects over to the soccer fields behind Desert Canyon Middle/Elementary.

This part of WW trail crosses golf course with very old City trail signs - I was glad we had the color aerial map - was confusing between the golf course signs and the very subtle and faded City trail signs. Walked along Powerline access road then under the Thompson Peak Parkway bridge - - that FREAKED the kids out. Realizing that we drive over that bridge all the time and a trail was under it the whole time!! They couldn't wrap their heads around it.

Then through the still water-filled muddy mess to West World property and the jam packed Barrett-Jackson activities.

Biggest shock was to find that at the WW1 trail marker sign - start of WW trail - there is a covered facility with flushing bathrooms, water, and picnic tables. Equestrian parking lot too.

We had gone so slow and it was too close to sunset to go back the way we came - - so we just took street sidewalks back past the library and school to our car. Kids really liked that b/c it's their home turf and seeing how the trail connected in a loop was fun.

Then dinner by fire on outdoor patio at Mesquite Grill at the McDowell Mountain Golf Club. Fun family outing.

ATC Challenge miles to date: 109/133

Date hike with Brad - I've dragged him into the ATC Challenge - and he observed that several of these remaining trails have neither physical challenge nor beauty. True. But dad-gum-it if you give me a challenge - I.will.finish.it!!!

My plan was to do the entire length of West World as a shuttle since it doesn't look like much of a trail from the pieces i've seen. I had three big miscalculations in my planning: (1) There's nowhere to park at the trail's end intersection with Cactus Rd, (2) Barrett Jackson is at West World, and (3) it's sprinkling rain off and on.

So we wasted some time driving around FLW Taliesin property trying to find somewhere mostly legal to park. No luck (although maybe we could have pulled into the service vehicle area by the canal at the top of the hill). So instead we parked at McDowell Mtn Golf Club and took Taliesin trail down to West World. I forgot that I needed that little stretch of Taliesin for ATC list anyway.

Saw a cool golf relic - sign for Sanctuary golf course saying stay off. WW trail is just as boring and awful as I suspected. Basically a service road for powerline vehicles. Only fun part was crossing over the canal. Went all the way to very end (intersection of Cactus Rd and FLW Blvd) and saw a planted palo brea on MSP land. Either planted or airborne since the neighborhood nearby has many of these. So now I can email Nature Guide leader of the Human Impact Study for McDowell Sonoran Field Institute to let her know there is at least one palo brea in the Preserve and it certainly got there by humans.

Then as sun was setting and starting to rain again - went back to the Golf Club and had dinner outside by the fireplace at Mesquite Grille. I'll finish the rest of West World sometime next week.
