Mike, Nick, Bob, Sara, Kay, John, and Marilyn joined me for the Friday Morning Hike in McDowell Mountain Regional Park.

We hiked Tortoise, turned right on Pemberton and then turned right into the arroyos across the trail from the pond. We made our way up to Pemberton and then entered another wash prior to hitting the Bluff Trail. We followed this wash into Stoneman Wash where we hiked NW until we reached the Bluff Trail. We returned via Bluff, Granite, and Wagner.

Kay said that she saw an owl while we were in the arroyos, but I missed it. I did see a bunch of ravens though.

I was amazed at the amount of wolfberry bushes with fruit. Some of the fruit was quite large (for wolfberries).

When we weren't in the washes, we saw a bunch of other trail users, mainly mountain bikers.

Mike and I hiked some washes for our Friday Morning Hike in MMRP...

Starting from the Four Peaks Trailhead, we crossed the road to the competitive track parking lot and then got on the Technical Loop. A service road took us to Stoneman/Pemberton Wash which we took southward. We headed west in one of Stoneman's larger feeder washes; we stayed in this wash as much as practical until we hit Pemberton. Pemberton and then Tonto Tank took us back to another of Stoneman's feeder washes. Stoneman took us back to the service road that we had hiked earlier in the day; but instead of backtracking on the service road, we took it east which led to the Sport Loop, which in turn returned us to the Comp Track parking lot.

We were rained on for part of our hike, but it was a light rain. It was just heavy enough that I didn't take any pictures during that segment.

We saw a few mountain bikers while we were out, but no one else.

While we were on the Pemberton, Mike spotted a chain fruit cholla which had some prickly pear paddles. We're not sure how this strange grafting came to be.

Another "wash day" for our Friday Hike in McDowell Mountain Regional Park...

Starting from the Four Peaks Trailhead (Horse Staging Area), we crossed the road, and then hiked the Technical Loop to the service road. The service road took us to Stoneman/Pemberton Wash where we went south for a while. One of Stoneman's feeder washes took us WNW for a number of miles. We eventually crossed Tonto Tank Trail and ended up in another wash which took us ESE, which eventually brought us back to the Tonto Tank Trail. We took Tonto Tank to Pemberton (which crossed Stoneman again) and then over to Shallmo Wash. For more washy goodness, we opted to hike in Shallmo Wash (proper) instead of on the trail of the same name. Shallmo Wash was especially loose and sandy; the other washes that we hiked earlier hadn't been churned up by horses and were relatively firm.

We picked up a number of balloons and other trash along the way.

We saw one rattlesnake, but it was somewhat camera shy.

We saw no other human trail users along the way, though for much of the hike we were in washes where it would be surprising to see anyone else.

I ran out of water in my 3 liter reservoir with about two miles to go. Thankfully, I still had a 40 oz bottle in my pack.

Bob, Mike, Mona, Marilyn, and I did a 9.1 mile hike starting from the Wagner Trailhead in McDowell Mountain Regional Park. We hiked Tortoise to Pemberton, and then took Pemberton to Stoneman Wash where we turned south down the wash. We hiked back to the Pemberton via one of the many feeder washes and then went northwest on Pemberton. We hiked into an arroyo west of the pond (where the homestead once was). Exiting the arroyo area, we hiked Tonto Tank back to Pemberton, continuing north back to Stoneman Wash. This time, we took the wash WNW until we got to the Bluff Trail. From there, we returned via Granite and Wagner.

We saw an eagle, at least two owls, other smaller birds, several rabbits, and one (western diamondback) rattlesnake on our hike. The only critter which cooperated in my photographic pursuits was the snake.

We saw some more Senna on the hike. I don't recall seeing any other flowers.

Mike, Nora, and I did an early morning loop hike in McDowell Mountain Regional Park. Starting from the Horse Staging Area, our loop incorporated sections of the Technical Loop, Stoneman Wash, Pemberton, Tonto Tank, and Shallmo Wash trails. We hiked in several other unnamed washes too.

The desert is a good deal drier and browner than it was just a few weeks ago. We still saw some wildflowers, but they are not nearly as abundant as they were just two weeks ago. We saw a few saguaro and buckhorn cholla blooms though.

With a tweaked knee a nice stroll in the park was what the doctor ordered, hitting two "new to me" trails along the way, Tonto Tank and Scenic. Saw a lot of rabbits in the early hours of the hike and had great views of the surrounding ranges throughout. Really nice temps, cloudy and cooler, for most of the day. Saw about a dozen or so mountain bikers and a half dozen trail runners, but only saw a few other hikers on the Scenic trail. The knee held up good so hopefully it will finish the healing process this next week.

Made my third appearance at the McDowell Mountain 15-miler on Superbowl Sunday. I tried to hang with the leaders except I struggled on the uphills. Finished 3rd overall though.

this wasn't anything really spectacular. I just wanted to hike instead of my usual jogging on the canal, especially while the weather is still cool enough. The temps stayed around 80 degrees, which made it pretty pleasant. as usual for this area, I saw more bikers than hikers. finished up by 10:30am and grabbed lunch in Fountain Hills for the family on my way home. I followed the new Rock Knob Trail that goes west from the Pemberton Trail into the Scottsdale McDowell Preserve, where it picks up to the northern TH. Looks like a plan for a new hike some time later this year.

First time in the McDowells from the Fountain Hills side. Did a lasso involving the Pemberton and Tonto Tank Trail. Trails very exposed, and relatively flat. Ideal for jogging. Saw a handful of hikers around the Boulder trail junction, but no one else. No wildlife except for some jackrabbits.

We had a family camp-out at the McDowell County Park. The original plan was to mountain bike the Pemberton loop.
The biking plans fell through so I made the best of it and hiked from the camp spot to the Gateway TH.

It was pretty warm hike. I saw my first ratter for the year. :scared:

Gin and Nate meet me at the TH.
