First hike of the new year. The Homestead Trail is one that's been added to this park since the first time I hiked all the trails here in 2001. Actually, this trail seems more like an old jeep road that was designated as an official trail, rather than actually having been built and added. The weather now is nice enough that it's the right time to do this as a loop. I opted for the shortest route, taking the Coldwater Trail to Butterfield, then Gadsden/Pedersen/Homestead/Pedersen/Gadsden/Coldwater.

The weather stayed cool all morning, and the fog hung around, but only in the distance. The low hanging clouds over the Estrellas kind of picked up after 10am, making for nice scenery.

Saw only 5 other hikers and one trail runner. Two hikers weren't on the trail, but over in a wash. I heard their voices as I hiked and looked over to see their heads peering at me over the edge of the deep wash. Odd. :-k

Heading back on the final stretch along the Coldwater Trail, a big pickup was headed northbound, and then soon after came back southbound, presumably after they reached a dead end. The gate at the trailhead was opened, and I suppose they didn't see the sign that says not to drive that service road.

Finished up shortly after noon. Nice to finally get the first hike in for 2019.

The plan was to do a run involving the Pedersen Trail. Got started from the Coldwater TH around 6:30. I started on the Coldwater, but took the Butterfield as soon as I came upon it. Both Coldwater and Butterfield would get me to the Pedersen in about the same time, but the Butterfield is a much nicer trail in my mind. The Butterfield ends at the Gadsden Trail which I took for about .5 miles to connect to the Pedersen. The Pedersen Trail is a tale of two trails. The eastern portion, twists and turns and interacts with the landscape. The southern and western portion is a straight, sandy road ](*,) Luckily, I guess, around mile 6, my knee started acting up and I realized as I came upon the Homestead trail that my run was going to become a hike. The hike mentality allowed me to climb "Pedersen Hill" (this is not the actual name of the hill, but it is the only noticeable elevation change that the Pedersen Trail circumnavigates as it changes from a south to west direction and I've always eye-balled it as I jogged past in previous visits). Not much elevation to the hill, maybe a couple 100 ft., but it did provide decent views to the west and south. After that, I went back to the Homestead and took that to where it connects back into the Pedersen. I was only on the Pedersen for a short time as I took the Gadsden to the Coldwater and the Coldwater back to the TH. Tried to jog a couple of times on these later trails, but I could only go short distances before my knee started complaining. Weather was great. Clear skies, but cool and breezy. Didn't see anyone until I hit the Coldwater: 3 bikers, 2 horsemen and 1 hiker. No wildlife except for a jackrabbit.

Last run of the year! Forecast was for a rainy day, but at 11am it was still just cloudy with patches of blue sky. Got to the TH around noon. I wanted to get some distance but I wanted to minimize the impact on my knees and feet so I tried to jog smart and do some flatter trails. (Not difficult, since most of the Estrella trails are fairly flat). I went CCW, taking the Toothacher back to the Gadsden, and then spent a brief time on the Pedersen to get to the Homestead Trail. It's been a couple of years since I'd been on the Homestead...it hadn't change much. A flat sandy wash/road that headed SE towards the Estrellas. It was actually an ideal time to be out there. The Gadsden, Pedersen, and Homestead can be beach like at times, but with the recent rain, the sand was pretty solid. From the Homestead, I connected back up to the Pedersen and took that to Gadsden and then that over to the Coldwater. Coldwater was a nice way to bring it home...downhill and roadish. Briefly connected to the Butterfield and the Toothacher to get back to the TH. Trails were great! Not muddy at all. Weather was perfect...cloudy and cool the whole time. I was able to jog the whole route, which is what I set out to achieve. :) Hopefully 2017 is as kind.

Happy trails to all! Happy New Year!!

Ginny & I introduced Mike & Pat to our route into Estrella Mountain Regional Park from the high school, and we took the Pederson Trail to the Homestead Trail and then went a mile or so down the Homestead before our return.

After R2R2R last Saturday, I didn't think I would go so long today but Trevor was going for a long one so I decide to go with. I was worried my legs would die after about 6 but they lasted for 12 or so. I had to push through the last 2. The weather was absolutely perfect so that helped. I had not been that far back in Estrella since the Coldwater race. Fun run.

Ran in the Coldwater Rumble 52K. Great weather with temps. Aravapia Running does a great job putting on races. Did the first 20.5 mile loop in 3:39 which I felt good about. Took about 10 minutes at the turn around then went back out for the shorter loop. Finished in 6:37 which was good for 24th place out of 81 runners. Got past by a few people the last couple miles as I was starting to slow down. Felt good through 28 miles but the last 5 were a lot of work. Fun and painful day.

Morning jog. Got out there a little before 7am. Went in on the Toothacher and then took the Pederson to where in intersected with the Homestead. Got to the intersection right as the sun crested the Estrella which was a little later than I hoped. I was hoping to be heading east on the Homestead with the sun still behind the mountains. As it was I had the sun glaring in my face for the whole section. This connected to the Pederson which I took back to the Gadsden and then quickly over to the Coldwater. Managed to jog the whole thing except for the last .25 miles. Speed wasn't that great. But I felt good (psychologically) about making it near the end. Pretty much had the trail to myself, even though the parking lot was full. Met one runner on the Pederson and a couple of bikers on the Coldwater.

Went out with Trevor and did the entire 20 mile loop identical to the Coldwater Rumble coming up. Did well but ankle was sore at the end which will make going back out for a 12 mile loop a challenge. Temps cool 28 at start and sure is was below 25 when we were on Homestead and the sun was coming up. Overall good day because I know I can finish the 32 miles at the race now but it will be a challange with a sore ankle.

Parked at the arena and did Toothaker>Dysart>Butterfield>Gadsen>Pedersen>Homestead>Pedersen>Coldwater>Dysart>Toothaker. Only saw one other person. Great cool weather after the rain. Trying to get ready for Coldwater Rumble in 6 weeks but going twice as much as today is going to be a challenge.

After yesterday, wanted something closer to home. Settled on the Homestead Trail in the Estrella Mountain Park. Looks like I have the honor of doing the first write up for this trail. The trail is located in the interior of the park and I had to hike in quite a ways to get there. I believe the quickest way to access the trail is by parking at the Rainbow Valley TH and then taking the Toothacher Trail into the interior. The Toothacher took me 3.6 miles and ended at the Gadsden. I took the Gadsden (and a little bit of the Pederson) west and north for almost 2 miles before I reached the start of the Homestead Trail. (Another option is to take the Pederson from where it connects to the Toothacher. This would definitely be more scenic, but I believe it might add a little more distance to the hike).

I officially started the Homestead Trail around the 5.5 mile mark. The trail does a little weaving but heads in an east - southeast direction. The trail alternates from acting as a broad wash to being a fairly wide, though rocky road. For the most part this is an unappealling trail, though I was fortunate with the recent rains. The rains made for compact sands in the wash parts, making it easy to hike and created some beautiful patterns in the sand with a mix of black, brown and white designs. The surrounding vegetation was ok, but even with the recent rains it is not nearly as vibrant as what I have seen in the east valley. By taking the trail eastward I was treated to a view of the Estrellas the entire time. The trail ends around the 8 mile mark where it connects to the Pederson.

For here I took the Pederson north. It was about a three mile trek to reach the Gadsden. I then took the Gadsden east to where it connect with the Butterfield and took the Butterfield back to the car. Initially I wanted to jog this route - and to be honest, these are some ideal trails for jogging - but the humidity quickly sapped any hope of that. I got about 6 miles in before I decided that walking was the more prudent mode. I felt pretty wiped by the time I finished the trail, but I'm glad I finally did the Homestead.
