it's been quite awhile since angela and i have been able to hike together
we both like the goldfields, so we lifted another idea from @hikerdw
counter-clockwise loop from lone mountain trailhead, hitting the peak first, then the circumference of lone mountain
got going shortly after 0800
i've done the peak, but angela had not
lots of wilderflowers, including poppies, lupine, chia, and scorpionweed
spent just a few minutes on the summit enjoying the views
descended, then continued east on a good trail
abundant flowers all along the circumference
once we turned north, we had to cross a number of drainages
these were steep with loose rock and scree, and slowed us both down quite a bit
angela kindly let me use one of her hiking poles, which helped tremendously
maybe i should start bringing mine? i seem to borrow @lindaann's quite often
the trail became less distinct and more overgrown on the north side, still with a few drainage crossings
the west side was somewhat better
our recommendation would be to hit the peak, go east about a mile, enjoy the flowers, then return
still a good hike, a nice day with good company :)
saw one deer and had great scenery
had a nice lunch at red white and brew
decided i would hit 9L peak after that
not far out of the way, and i needed the peak
less than a mile
good views of the supes and goldfields - worth doing once
thanks for hiking, angela - it's been too long
wildflower observationwildflower observationwildflower observationwildflower observationwildflower observation
Wildflowers Observation Substantial
poppies, lupine, scorpionweed, chia, some brittlebush

With cheap peak bagging and stat chasing the order of the week I felt I had no choice to secure my position in something or another place way down the list by adding this outstanding wonder to my 2017 repertoire. I was pleased to have the company of its namesake join me. Apparently the property owners and their lawyers got together and decided to put up some new signs indicating that it’s private property and they aren’t responsible for your stupidity.

Grandpa Tuesday on Friday with Lily and Issac. I told the Kids Todd named this after a HAZ celebrity that he always looks up to, John9L. We went to see a movie (Ferdinand) and check out the big Christmas tree at Tempe Marketplace. Afterwards we did this hike to work up a little appetite for a healthy dinner. Pizza :o . Thanks kids, :yr: .

I had a long week, worked 6 days in a row, and had a hike planes in the Superstitions. On the drive out there I decided I was feeling too lazy to enjoy it and started thinking about where else I could go. As I drove past "9AL peak" I decided today was the day to do it. The trail/road is pretty washed out in some places, and although short, its steep. Took me 11 minutes to get to the highest point. I did my beast to walk around all the areas to log the most mileage since it was .45 or so to the top. Once I got to the bottom I found a short trail that worked around the base, I followed it for a while, but it just dumped out to the open area to the west of the butte. I actually liked this and wish the city would have bought this land and did something with it instead of that nub on Recker. Looks like there are apartments or something right next to the CVS so this land here is shrinking.

Ok old man story time here...
I have been up this little mountain before, you see back when I was in high school, you could drive up to the top. The antenna or whatever it was was still there at that time. I remember having a video from that day, I found the video pretty quickly, but trying to hook up a VCR to one of my TVs is a different story. I'm including some pictures from that day over 20 years ago so hopefully someone will enjoy them. Oh and I did it real high tech like, phone pictures of my tv screen!

As a HAZER I felt obligated to do this hike. I didn't realize 9L is so popular. There were 16 cars parked at the trailhead. Nice short local workout hike. People all friendly.
There are "No U Turns" signs at all the median breaks. I went down to the CVS and turned around there.

Hiking buddy took me to this little bump in the road. I had no idea it existed officially so I consulted the all-knowing hiking swami, Chumley.

Had I known this was 9L Peak, I would have passed. (just kidding John)

Been hiking this since 1994, quarter mile from the house, good little hike to get in shape if done multiple times.

I decided to get BobP off the disabled list or out of retirement or wherever he's been by enticing him with a pair of peaks he hasn't previously climbed! Claire and Kyle decided to join us. :y:

Storms made for dramatic views from the Silly summit, and there are enough trails to link here that I'm surprised that Mazatzal and The Eagle haven't been out here yet.

Once we finished a quick summit loop Claire really wanted to do 9L so we headed over that way. We spent some time playing around the base, but it started to spit and we decided it wasn't worth trying to finish. Things got a little wet and we had to abort. We may be the first to attempt 9L and not make it. ](*,)

We cleaned up and headed for BRI. Nice day out there. Good to see Bob back in the game! :)

Post Picketpost, it was convenient to hit Silly Mountain. Silly has many trails to choose from and could have spent more time there, but we still had one more hit. We moved on to 9L peak. Since our comrade 9L is gone this weekend, Chumley wanted a 9L substitute so he insisted we top of our day with some 9L. Unfortunately, we found the weather too uncooperative so we bailed early. Mission aborted. We'll have to go back to complete that unfinished business in the future. Also a future trip back to Silly is a possibility, since there are so many more miles of trails to do. Kyle joked about going back to Silly for some silly backpacking. LOL.

BRI is a stupid name. Glad I'm not a vegan because the menu was lacking. Chicken Sando was good. War paint was better than 480G. All that was after this amazingly challenging hike :y:

Hit 9L Peak with a couple hundred other folks who also had the idea to view the valley's fireworks displays from that vantage point.

This was my second east side hike back on the 20th. After hitting the Usery Park I drove over to hill and parked just off the road. Jogged to the top and then walked around the circumference of the top and then back down to the car. While I was there I saw multiple people doing repeat ascents. I think one guy was on his 4th climb when I was backing out to leave. Trail and scenery are pretty basic. Surrounded by homes and the freeway and the trail is more of an old mining road than a trail, but the locals seem maximize its potential.

This was my very first hike. I really enjoyed the view from up here as it was wayyy better than the park or the back yard. I can't wait to see where else I get to hike.

I hiked Meridian Trail today after work to look for snakes. I only found one. Very few birds were out, and no lizards were seen. Weather was perfect for snakes, and I was not satisfied seeing only one snake. I was planning on going to the Salt River, but it started to rain, so I opted to go to 9L Peak.

I ambulated around the mountain. I wasn't excepting to see much, but to my surprise, I found a MONSTER gopher snakes in the rocks at 9L Peak. 9L Peak! :o It was the 2nd largest gopher snake that I've ever seen, and I saw it at 9L PEAK!!!

Seeing it in the rocks, I did what any HAZ hiker would have done. I grabbed it. It was difficult to handle while photographing it, so I did my best. Still, I couldn't believe that this monster serpent was thriving in an urban environment.

After that, I felt lucky and kept hunting and found another gopher snake. Pretty sweet if you ask me. Snakes = 8). Who would have thought 9L Peak had snakes on it? Absolutely, no one was on the mountain when I got there. I hope 9L Peak doesn't start attracting more people knowing that there's snakes on the mountain.

Hit up 9L Peak with my sweetheart for a valentine's day sunset picnic with takeout from Cheesecake Factory and a little homemade fondu, courtesy of the JetBoil. Great sunset and the best company in the world. :kf: :budrose:

Took another day off and went for a few hikes.

#1 Pass Mtn ridgeline - had not done this one. I also went along to the high point 3312 and then down a gully to the NE.

#2 After Pass I took Usery road north and went up Lone Mtn - EJ Peak.

#3 Last and least! On my way back to 202 I took the quick trip up 9L peak
