Our objective was to do a small loop and add in the exploration of Mesquite Canyon and the high point which the rock climbing community calls "Hog Heaven". We took the Tom's Thumb summit trail up and then cut over on the Feldspar to Mesquite Canyon. An un-named use trail follows the sandy wash entering the canyon then breaks off and the climb begins in earnest. Route shown in photoset.

Great views abound in Mesquite Canyon. And great big rocks live here to. We were the only hikers in the area but we could hear climbers commands echoing off the walls. We finally saw the group of 4 doing climbs and rappels off of a large rock across the way. They even waved. :) Definitely more friendly than the masked up fashionistas going up Tom's Thumb.

As we neared the summit the hike turned into 3 points of contact climbing which Cathy put up with for a while then told me in no uncertain terms that she was stopping and for me to go on and finish. I made it almost to the top...within 50 yards, but it turned into a very steep two hands and two feet crawl up and over boulders nearly straight up. Lots of catclaw too. With some leather gloves and a larger pair of stones it would have been no problem at all. : wink :

I made my way back down to Cathy and only slipped and fell twice. :( I'm going to be sore tomorrow I think. Great hike though in a beautiful section of desert.

I was looking for a hike close to home, and was wanting something different than going to the Lost Dog Wash TH; so I decided to head out to the Tom's Thumb TH. It has been a little over a year since I had been there, so I was overdue. I decided to do a Figure-8 loop that was a combination of the Hog Heaven Loop and a loop that utilized the Tom's Thumb/Windgate Pass/East End Trails. For good measure, I added an out-and-back hike to the Tom's Thumb Lookout.

I began the hike by doing the Hog Heaven Loop CW. This was my favorite part of the hike -- it was a steep and sometimes slippery climb up to the HangnailThumbnail Rock Formation. There was a fair amount of rock climbing and scrambling on this portion of the hike -- more than I remembered from previous times doing it. I then went over to East End -- the high point in the McDowells -- and hung out for a while. Then I descended down to the Tom's Thumb Trail, and did the Tom's Thumb-Windgate Pass-East End Loop CCW. The descent from the Tom's Thumb Trail down to the Windgate Pass Trail was my least favorite part of the hike -- it was fairly rocky and a bit steep, and did not offer much redeeming value imho. The trek up the East End Trail was as tough as ever!

The weather was good for this hike -- it was a tad cloudy in the morning but sunny in the afternoon. It was 38 degrees when I started a little after 9:00 AM, and was 49 when I got back to the TH.

We were the last people in America to get cell phones, and the last people to get a computer and I'm sure it's a safe bet that we were also the last HAZ members to finally hike this little "walk & gawk" (courtesy of @tibber) lasso loop trail. Well it's done, so there you go! Route shown in photoset.

We added on a second loop using the Feldspar Trail on the return and glad we did. There is a canyon we passed with a trail going back for the rock climbers that looks great. We will be coming back for that and to get up to Tom's Thumb...another unscratched itch.

The wind today was brutal. Seemed we were bucking it no matter what our direction of travel. Even with my stampede string on my chin I lost my hat several times. The five miles felt more like eight or ten. The park seemed very busy at the parking lot and trailhead but we encountered very few people once on the trail.

Hog Heaven. This one has been on my list for a while, and with the beautiful late-May weather, I did it. This was my first time doing this one so I took my time with it. I followed the track on my Route Scout and well-placed cairns and did just fine. Mind you, this was just the loop and nothing else, so maybe my mileage was a little short. Next time, I plan on adding Tom's Thumb and going back the North side down the climber access trails to make an ultimate Hog Heaven Loop!
The weather was good; very gusty though. It can be hard to climb along the ridge when the winds are gusting; there is some exposure. Also, the dried grass meant a lot of stickers in my shoes and socks. And cuts on my legs!
The wildlife was great on this hike. A pair of cardinals (male and female) in a tree halfway up, and a Gila Monster on the trail too! The other wildlife were the Humans going up and down the trail to Tom's Thumb. Really good hike!

Working in hospital this weekend - having FOMO of spring flowers in McDowells. Not fear - actually missing out ! Scanned some hashtags on IG and went for a big patch of poppies at the base of Rock Knob then did little loop back to car.

Highlight was seeing official sign recognizing spur up to the Salt and Pepper rocks. Dug through archives to find my favorite video of that spot kids in 2013.

Happy Spring Y’all !

Denny and I assembled another Mötley Crüe of Freaks and Geeks for our annual Year End hike.

Chilly/Breezy morning, but the steady to climb to East End, warmed us up.

I'd never been up the Hog Heaven trail to East End Peak, so sampling this geology in the early morning light, was a treat. Little Dave signed us in up top and we took our obligatory group shot with glasses. We slipped our way down to the Toms Thumb Trail where John's 2 buddies split back to the TH. I'll be up here again.

We stopped at the emptied out Ogre's den before heading down East End. East End to the windy Windgate, back to the steady uphill climb up Toms Thumb. After a short side trip to the Outlook, it's all downhill to the TH

Another successful New Years Eve-ish hike in the books.

May you all have a Happy, Healthy, Hiking New Year!

Coldest desert hike I've been on in quite some time. Balaclava and windbreaker were a must the first few hours. Ron and Gene, my two college buddies, joined us for the Hog Heaven portion of the hike.

Hog heaven is a pretty cool route up to East End Peak. Not too brushy or hard to follow. After descending East End trail and heading over Windgate Pass, we saw some bow hunters at Inspiration point, then three deer five minutes later. The grind up Tom's Thumb trail was better than expected. Always pretty.

We finished up by heading out to Lookout Point then back down to the TH. Great hike. Thanks all. Happy New Year! :)

It was chilly at the start but the steep climb got our blood flowing. Once the route hiking was done the trail seemed easy. There are sections in the sun with no breeze that felt warm then around the bend it the shade with the wind it was cold again. There were goji berries everywhere. While not everyone is a fan of the berry train, I likem. In summary a tough hike with good people and good views to end 2018 and usher in 2019. Happy New Year!

Another end of the year hike with Bruce and some of his posse. Lp even brought a couple college buddies. Cool they stay in touch. Dave never ages, Wally brings the best props, Joe’s bitter berry face is 🤣 Ray seems to be all healed up, Bruce did this on a sprained ankle. Great hike and company albeit a lot more than my norm. Ouch! Thanks gentlemen. Always enjoy these hikes!! Safety first. Happy New Year! You rock!

Laura joined me for a Friday morning (into afternoon) hike in the McDowells.

Starting from Tom's Thumb Trailhead, we started on Tom's Thumb Trail and then took the first climber's access trail to the right. This took us to the ridge on which the Thumb is situated and took us past this prominence. (This is part of the Lost Wall Loop.) When we reached Tom's Thumb Trail again, we turned left and then right onto the East End Trail where we descended until the end of the trail intersecting the Windmill Trail. We continued left on Windmill, then left on Coachwhip, left on Pemberton, left on Boulder, and right on Marcus Landslide. When we got to the intersection with Feldspar, I bid goodbye to Laura and continued on Feldspar and then back on Tom's Thumb. (Tacking on Feldspar at the end of this loop adds perhaps an extra mile of distance.)

When I had last hiked the climber's access trail for the Lost Wall Loop, I got lost midway along. That didn't happen today - I figured out where I went wrong last time and did not repeat that mistake.

The trails were all somewhat damp after last night's rain, but that seemed to improve things somewhat - they didn't feel quite as loose as they normally do.

I saw some evidence of recent erosion on a few trails - in one spot on Tom's Thumb Trail, I saw some exposed wire mesh used to reinforce the trail. East End was somewhat loose and eroded, but I sort of like it that way. It didn't seem much worse (or better) than the last time I did it.

We saw some poppies, brittlebush, and chuparosa along the way. I think I got a photo of a bee on some brittlebush.

Ben, Marilyn, Nora, and Kay joined me for a hike of most of the Hog Heaven Loop. We visited the East End Peak and continued back to Tom's Thumb Trail. At that junction, the rest of the group finished the Hog Heaven Loop by returning to the trailhead via Tom's Thumb Trail. I added on a few more miles... Down East End, left on Windmill, left on Coachwhip, left on Pemberton, left on Boulder, right on Marcus landslide, right on Caballo, which brought me back to the trailhead.

I had mentioned that I had a hard time finding the trail in a few spots on my hike of the Lost Wall Loop a few weeks ago. This wasn't a problem on the Hog Heaven Loop, though it is easy to get off route if you're not paying attention. I found the route finding to be easier than normal on this hike.

Recent rains seem to have firmed up the climber's access trails which make up the Hog Heaven Loop. It seemed less treacherous than normal.

I had been up the East End Trail two weeks ago. The descent seemed looser than expected, but then that aspect of things is often easier when going uphill.

The rest of the trails were in good condition. I noticed a couple of (recently made) bypasses around some erosion on Marcus Landslide.

After crossing over to MMRP, I noticed a bunch of pink ribbons attached to vegetation with clothespins. I think these mark the route for the upcoming horse event in MMRP - Lead, Follow, or Get Out of the Way.

Did Tom's Thumb Trail up to the base of the thumb, then back to the car, which is a nice 4.4 miles round trip, but I needed to complete 6.2 miles (10K), so I tacked on a little bit of Feldspar Trail, the equestrian trail, and Marcus Landslide Trail. I parked at 6:45am just as the lightning and rain were ending. There were no other cars in the parking lot!! I had the area all to myself for about an hour. It was so glorious with the fresh rain, chirping birds, moving clouds. I even saw a Desert Grassland Whiptail (Aspidoscelis uniparens) trying to warm up in the middle of the trail. Typically they are wicked fast, but this little one was cold and slow enough that I was able to catch it. The trail was eroded and washed out in a lot of the switchbacks section. Volunteers put in sooo much hard work to maintain the trail for our enjoyment and use. Don't forget to thank them when you see them!

For my Friday morning hike, I did a combo of the Hog Heaven Loop plus the Lost Wall Loop. Towards the end, I added in Feldspar and returned on Marcus Landslide to extend the distance somewhat.

Monsoon rains have left yellow grass over much of the terrain. Despite being familiar with this route, I had to pause and look ahead for cairns several times in order to figure out where to go next. I also encountered some erosion at various points along the way, particularly on my descent of the Lost Wall Loop which made things a bit more interesting.

I saw a few hikers and even mountain bikers while I was on Tom's Thumb Trail. I didn't see anyone on the climber's access trails for either the Hog Heaven or Lost Wall sections.

For Friday's Hike, I did the Hog Heaven Loop and added on a bit at the end.

I saw a Gila Monster on my way to Hog Heaven. Later, as I was descending from the East End, I saw a number of caterpillars munching on new vegetation. As I descended Tom's Thumb Trail, I saw some Caltrops (which I had at first misidentified as Mariposa Lilies).

Once I turned off onto Mesquite Canyon Trail (which was almost immediately after leaving the parking lot), I didn't see anyone until I got back to Tom's Thumb Trail. And, even then, the traffic on Tom's Thumb Trail was a good deal sparser than normal, perhaps due to the heat. A fellow from one of the groups I met asked me if the trail leveled off soon. (Yeah, eventually, but not soon.)

I noticed a fair amount of erosion on the Feldspar Trail as well on the lower sections of the climber's access trail that goes through Mesquite Canyon. It was somewhat eroded later on too, but as bad as those sections at lower elevations. There was no problem with following the trail, but it did made the footing a bit more interesting than normal. There were other sections which are normally loose, but which seemed to be scoured clean of the usual gravel which normally make these sections treacherous.

I like the climber's access trail that forms the interesting part of the Lost Wall Loop. It allows us to turn lasso hikes utilizing Tom's Thumb Trail into (more of) a loop hike. That's what I did (again) today...

For today's hike, I started off on the Lost Wall Loop. When I hit Tom's Thumb Trail (after passing Tom's Thumb, the pinnacle), I turned right (west) which took me to the Scottsdale side of things. I returned via Windgate, Windmill, East End, and Tom's Thumb Trail. When I got near the bottom, I added on an extra mile by doing Feldspar, Marcus Landslide, and Caballo.

I got an early start, so was able to hike in the shade when I got to the west side of the mountain. Hiking up East End was hard - it's steep and the breeze was mostly at my back, so I didn't feel it much. Thankfully, the higher I got, the breezier it got, so it did eventually make a difference.

I saw a bunch of other hikers and even one mountain biker who was somehow managing to ride his bike up Tom's Thumb Trail (from the Scottsdale side). I didn't see as many people as I was expecting though.

For Friday's hike, Kay and I hiked a combination of the Hog Heaven Loop and the Lost Wall Loop.

We started off by hiking Marcus Landslide and then turned right onto Feldspar. Just off the trail and to the left are some low angle (third class) slabs which lead to the top of Sven Tower I. We summited there and then continued on the climber's access trail leading past Sven Towers II and III. This soon joined the standard route for the Hog Heaven Loop. We hiked past Hog Heaven and the Thumbnail Pinnacle and the continued onto the East End (summit) where we also went to that summit.

Continuing on, we descended the climber's access trail to Tom's Thumb Trail. From there, we hiked over to (and then on) the oft used climber's access trail going to Tom's Thumb. We continued past Tom's Thumb and then down past Lost Wall, Half & Half Wall and the Fort McDowell climbing areas. This eventually led us back to Tom's Thumb Trail and then back to the parking lot.

The route is only about five miles, but it's (IMO) some quality hiking. I think this is my favorite route in the area.

Second time to Tom’s Thumb this year, first time from Tom’s Thumb trailhead, verifying for me this way is easier. I picked this hike for my son and daughter in law ,they wanted to do this in tourist mode so they sent me to scout ahead , arrived at east end trail junction from the trailhead in 28 minutes, then waited and waited then quit recording the trip time. We lollygagged around Tom’s Thumb ,had the obligate picture from the trail steward accomplished. While my son and his wife rested I went to the lookout and took a couple of pictures not worthy of posting due to haze. On the way down noticed that I felt less likely to have an uncontrolled slide by jogging slowly versus walking in sort of go with the flow descent. Took the feldspar trail over to Marcus Slide trail, did not get too enthused about this particular trail, good for accessing the climbing areas ,I suppose. Finished in 80 degree temps , there was a steady stream of pleasant hikers today but also surprised how many dogs apparently like to hike this trail in the heat. Noted ground squirrels , small lizards and one mexican poppy .

I led a group of seven on a hike starting from the Tom's Thumb Trailhead on Friday the 16th.

In addition to doing the Lost Wall Loop, we visited the Lookout and, after descending Tom's Thumb Trail, we turned off onto Feldspar. We hiked a short ways on Marcus Landslide and returned via the Caballo Trail.

The climber's access trail that forms part of the Lost Wall Loop was firmed up by the rain that we had several days earlier. This trail normally has some really loose sections, but this wasn't really a problem for our hike on Friday.

I don't hike the Lookout Trail very often, so we added it into the mix. After doing the ridge over to and past Tom's Thumb, the Lookout is kind of anticlimactic. It was cool to be able to look down at Windgate Pass though.

1st trip
On Friday, Jan 19, I led a group of seven (counting myself) on a hike of the Hog Heaven Loop in the McDowells. Starting at the Tom's Thumb Trailhead, we hiked a very short ways on Tom's Thumb Trail, turned left onto Mesquite Canyon, and then left again on Feldspar. We then turned onto the climber's access trail that goes through Mesquite Canyon. We followed this to and then past Hog Heaven and continued up to the Thumbnail Pinnacle. We continued on along the ridge leading to the East End (peak); several of us summitted there. We returned to the Tom's Thumb Trail via yet another climber's access trail.

When we got back to the parking area, after saying our goodbyes, I headed out on Marcus Landslide, turned left onto Boulder, left onto Pemberton, and left onto Rock Knob. I then hiked Marcus Landslide until I got to the side trail leading to the prominent mushroom boulders near the Sven Slab climbing area. The trail continues on - sort of. I ended up hiking past the Energizer / Hawk boulder that I used to climb in my younger days. I followed the Sven Slab climber's access trail back to Marcus Landslide, turned left onto Feldspar, and then left again onto Tom's Thumb where I hiked up a short ways in order to reach my distance goal for the day.

It was a great day - the highlight of the day was the Hog Heaven Loop. It's a really fun loop with awesome views along the way. Route finding went really well too - but, of course, I've done it a bunch of times.
