The weather was cool and breezy to start today so it felt good as we climbed the old jeep trail to the saddle. We passed on climbing to the peak but still had great views. The original hike description is good and there isn't much I can add. The road starts easy under foot but deteriorates after you pass through the boundary gate. There is one place though, before the gate, where the road splits. Stay along the bottom. The other looks like it winds up hill to a gazebo (of all things!) It wasn't marked but I assume it was private given all the For Sale and No Trespassing signs on Elephant Butte Road.
My car odometer only shows whole miles so I'd estimate we went about 2 miles along Elephant Butte before turning onto Hardt Tank Road. We drove maybe 1/2 mile before parking - not a No Trespassing sign to be seen.
