Another nice morning for this hike. I have been coming out here a little in the morning as the traffic is really getting bad. And I am sure when they start building the next phase it will get a lot worse.
I also notice a few state troopers hiding out on the sides of the road oh well.
Weather wise it was great and I did notice that some decided that we all need a bench to sit on on the summit. I guess we will just have to wait and see how long it's up there before park service removes it.

Nice Monday (holiday) hike. Cold, overcast, blustery, morning. Recovering from a cold, missed my normal Saturday hike.

I have a backlog of trail write ups that I need to catch up on. Too much work, hiking and other activities and not enough time to encapsulate them. This was an after work run. Got to the Apache Wash TH just after 4pm. Did a clockwise lasso. Took Ocotillo to the Ridgeline - hit the vista - and then Ridgeline to Sidewinder to Ocotillo and back to the TH. Good run. Pain free for the most part (knees and feet are always chirping, some days louder than others). There had been a brief shower an hour earlier. Trails were dry, but there was a freshness to them which I always enjoy. Temps were great (still!! :D ) and there was no mugginess which is what you might expect after a May rain. Saw 4 hikers while I was out. Minimal wildlife.

Did a nice loop hike using the Sidewinder Trail to the Ridgeback Trail from the Apache Wash Trailhead. Nice cool weather - what a great hike!

Needed a leg stretcher. Took Deb out to enjoy the day.
Poppies are poppin', brittlebush, a few Lupine, Fiddleneck and some of the ocotillo were flowering. In abundance were Scorpionweed (verified by the odor) and another one that looks very, very similar, only a slightly lighter purple, without the odor.

Plenty of families out enjoying the perfect weather.

Hot Air Balloon morning, grabbed some photos on the drive in; about a dozen. They were pretty much all on the ground by the time I rounded the first hill.
HAZel was M.I.A.; I tried everything to get it to function correctly but it wasn't happening thus the 5 minutes in break (will send info to our Webmaster). Very disappointed as I like to see how I'm doing on workout hikes. Guessed at mileage and AEG using my old route and route editor.

I hiked C-clockwise from Apache Wash TH. Lots of hikers, bikers and all dogs were on a leash :o , one lizard and a couple song birds. Seemed like quite a few elderly out too; makes me think I need to find a harder trail for my workout hikes  .

It was so nice out I extended my hike and came back around and did Apache View hill again. The trails are all in good shape. I could have hiked longer but I was getting hungry.

My bulging disk flareup is mostly gone now which is about normal healing for when it flares. I was worried since I'm five years older than the last time that it might take longer; thankfully not.

:( my knee. Guess I'll rest it for the week and see what happens. First 3 miles were awesome as I didn't feel a thing but after that, my knee started hurting and the last mile I had to try and hike keeping it straight. I shouldn't have done the New Year's Day hike as apparently my knee just wasn't fully recovered as it hurt for the rest of the week but felt good Sunday morning.

Reminds me of the time in 1998 I hurt my back laying paving stones. Got the PENS treatment, thot it was healed, went back to laying paving stones, hurt my back, never healed but enough to get by without surgery (bulging disc).

Anyway, hiked Ocotillo to Ridgeback to Sidewinder and finished on Ocotillo. Lots of bikers out today and quite a few hikers, one horseback rider. Trails seem to be in great shape.

Needed something close, about 10 miles, not too much gain, to try and blow the phlegm out.
This fit the requirements and the weather was a plus.

Loop around Sonoran Preserve from Apache Wash trail head. Started on Apache Wash over to Sidewinder trail. Took that to the Ridgeback Trail and checked out the overlook for a few minutes. Then down the other side to the Ocotillo Trail and back to the trail head.

Time to head out to the Apache Wash Trailhead and try out some trails that I had not been on yet. The dash thermometer showed a cool 58 degrees when I arrived at the trailhead already moderately busy. Got underway with the rising sun about 6:30. I decided to head out on the Octotillo Trail then I would see what the spirit moved me to do as I went on. I soon got to the intersection with the Ridgeback Trail and I decided that I would head up it for a while and see how things went. The ascent was not too difficult and the trail afforded some great views from time to time. I bypassed the overlook trail and decided to turn around right where you head down on the switchbacks. The loop will have to wait until I am in better shape. As you can see I like to shoot the big views and take in what's at my feet. Case in point the deposits of quartz in various rocks and an awesome spidey web. The weather was great, Hello Fall! The trails got busier as the morning went along which is normal.

The chance of precip was too high up north so back to Plan B, get up early and hike locally. I am still in prep mode for my Glacier Park backpack in a few weeks. Kelly came up with this route. A very nice alternative to Shaw Butte and same amount of drive time. Note to self, for monsoon weather hiking you are just going to have to get up at 5 :( (I did 5:30 AM today).

I was grateful for cloud cover and the occasional breeze from time to time. I did pull out my umbrella for the last mile though. I heard some coyotes and the cicadas were out as I came off of Ridgeback Overlook where I had stopped to edit some photos and do a FB post. There were a few others on the trail including several bike riders and other hikers and a couple runners that were glistening. Yep, the humidity was a little intense. The trail was in real nice shape.

This is my first monsoon hike of any substance and I lived to tell about it.
Oh, this is the first time that I can remember not putting ice in my water... prefer the ice.

Video - [ youtube video ] including Cicadas.

Short hike in the furnace. Started off from the Apache Wash TH around 4:30. I did a loop involving the Ocotillo, Ridgeback, Sidewinder, Apache Wash and then back on Ocotillo. I saw a phoenix spontaneously combust, a salamander breath fire and then hot foot it across the trail, a caravan of camels heading towards a large lake with palm trees and a harem hiking hurriedly after. :D I actually had the trails to myself, though there were two other cars parked in the lot. Heat doesn't usually bother me, but I could feel it today. Jogged a little bit of the loop (about 2 miles) then the camels got in the way.

Nice 6 mile loop this morning out of Apache Wash Trailhead. One of the news channels mentioned fog in the valley this morning and I had good luck with fog between the ranges up here before. Unfortunately, that would not be the case today. None the less, still an excellent way to start the day. Too many people with misbehaving dogs today though. Almost got caught in a dog fight, twice!

Also, I took this opportunity to run Route Scout on my phone vs my Garmin GPS60 back to back and note the differences. My phone logged 5.71 miles and 941' AEG, the Garmin came up with 5.93 miles and 836' AEG. The extra AEG on the phone must be from repeatedly lifting from my pocket to my face to read all those super important emails and text messages
