1st trip
After returning from Easter in Maryland, bougainvillea were doing great in our neighborhood, so I decided to take a crack at another local flower hunt.

Brown’s Ranch Trailhead was about half full when I started hiking at 8:45 a.m. Just gazing out at the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, I did not see any flowers, so my hopes were not high.

I headed out on Upper Ranch Trail. After a ⅓ of a mile, Upper Ranch Trail passes under power lines. That is when I started finding some small flowers here and there. The strawberry hedgehog mostly had flowers, but they were smaller, and not fully open. The ocotillo were outstanding. 👍

It was interesting to watch Brown’s Mountain change shape throughout the day, as I rotated around it.

Corral Trail has some nice views north to Cave Creek, but also travels through some lower areas, so there was more grass & shrubbery along it, particularly acacia, which as bright green as I’ve ever seen them. The creosote were still blooming. 🌿

There is little shade anywhere in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, so I took advantage of what I could find for brief break in a wash at the east end of Teddy Bear Ridge.

In the Brown’s Ranch area I found collapsed barbwire fence, an old feed hopper, a sunken foundation, a dry cinder block cattle tank, two dry cement spring boxes, and some other odds & ends. I somehow missed the ranch house remains, which are on the west side of Brown’s Ranch Road.

Just after I turned onto Brown's Ranch Road for the second time, I got rattled for my first time this year, by a small, but very angry, western diamondback. Thankfully, we were on opposite sides of the road, about 10 ft. apart. I didn’t get closer, but when I crouched down to take a photo he quickly slithered along his side of the road in my direction. That got my attention! 😳

After the snake and I parted ways, I finally started to encounter mountain bikers and other hikers.

I found the best strawberry hedgehog of my hike on the way up Brown's Mountain Trail.

Brown’s Summit Spur is short, but steep — 180 AEG in only 250 yds. — and slippery with pea gravel over rock. The summit is larger than it looks from below, with plenty of good sitting rocks. Being free standing, Brown’s Mountain has 360° views. Four Peaks was obvious to the east, but the only mountains I took time to identify were to the south: East End Mountain, Tom’s Thumb, Troon Mountain and Pinnacle Peak.

After photos and a snack break, I headed carefully down the summit spur to the saddle, then continued south on Brown’s Mountain Trail. As turned right onto Brown’s Ranch Road for the third time, I was sideswiped by a mountain biker blasting along the road. Not a technical track: A flat road. What a hero. 🙄

After I finished my hike, I was going to stop at Mickey D’s for my traditional post hike lunch: Filet-O-Fish and large fries (extra salt), but I realized I was totally cashless, having donated my last $3 to the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, who maintain the park. I call that a win. 😇

Some of the best ocotillo I've ever seen. Many blooming strawberry hedgehog with smaller, not quite as open flowers. Creosote still doing well. Brittlebush flowers withering. Two clusters of desert wishbone bush. Scattered, not very fluffy, desert marigold. One miniature woollystar cluster. Flat top buckwheat have small clusters. A few small desert globemallow. A single New Mexico thistle. One cluster of pink / violet six-petal flower I could not identify.

This was not the outing we had planned so the route was created on the fly. We begun from Faesfield TH, started heading toward Granite Mtn, then turned and ended up going to browns ranch TH. I was able to convince my friend to head up Browns peak. We finally took a more conventional route back.

Saw many mtn bikers on these trails. They are manicured and fairly flat. Browns peak was the complete opposite and is where much of the EG came from.

After volunteering for a 2 hour shift at the Browns Ranch TH I hiked to the top of Brown’s Mountain for the first time in a dozen years. Chatted with a gentlemen from Calgary for about 15 minutes and headed back down. Beautiful day with excellent views from the top.

Nice hike with the kids. Started on Upper Ranch, Brown’s Mtn, then finished on the road. With the clouds, it was a little cooler than anticipated, but the kids like cold weather. We had the summit to ourselves almost the entire time we were up there. Lots of people heading up while we were on our way down though.

My first time hiking in the Northern part of the Sonoran Preserve; I like it! I usually hike in the McDowell portion of the park, but I'm slowly recovering from a hurt ankle, and decided this was just the right speed for me. Nothing too difficult today, just some flat trails and a quick summit up Brown's Mountain. I was really impressed with all of the trails up here and how beautiful it was. The summit had great views of the entire valley and just the right amount of challenge. Not too crowded either once you get away from the trailhead. I may have to return here soon and try out my mountain bike. Great facilities as usual for Scottsdale parks. The bathrooms are wonderful and don't stink!
I'll have to check out the other trails in the area. :)

Followed a route from The_Eagle from June '15. Super busy with lots of bikes due to some event from REI. The trails are super smooth and the miles sort of just melt away; even when you are sick. I had to talk myself into knocking out the Jane Rau trail at the end and almost stepped on a rattler while on it.

Decided to check out a part of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve I hadn't gone to yet. I kept taking less busy trails to avoid the people until finally I caught the summit trail. Decent little climb and I had he summit to myself. Ate some fruit, took a video and started back down.

Did this loop clockwise, following Booneman's official route: Passed Cone Mtn on the N, then continued N on the rough and lonesome Upper Ranch Tr with its numerous ravines and finally to the Mountain Tr and on up to the saddle of Brown's Mountain. At the saddle I did not go for the summit on the S nor the Scenic Overlook on the N. I had an hour before sunset, and I knew the camera would be busy shooting this beautiful, virgin land as the shadows began to stretch across it. I got disgusted with the gods of Four Peaks for keeping them optically tantalizing yet unlit. Can't have everything. Got back 10 minutes after a terrific sunset with only two other vehicles remaining in the parking lot. The lot was very busy earlier. If only I lived closer to Brown's Ranch than what is the actual 33 miles and close to an hour's drvie, I would be out here much more often. For desert scenery, I can think of only a couple places in Maricopa County that match this area.

Patches of Fiddle Neck and Phacelia mostly coming up Brown Mountain's NW slope. Also ran into two or three Blue Dick blooms. This area is still a week or two away from hitting peak wildflower season.

Doing pathfinder duties at Brown's Ranch from 8:30 to 11:30 and decided to hike to the summit as I'd not done it for several years. Footing was better than I recall on the trail coming down from the summit. I think erosion has washed some top soil away and left a rocky base in some areas.

It was fine time turtle got a bit of elevation in his rehab diet.
We were treated to a bobcat siting on the way in. Denny about wet himself.

Overcast, misted a couple of times, a bit of a breeze, the weather was perfect.
We saw a couple of hikers and some mountain bikers enjoying the day.

I ran the Turtle up Brown's Mountain, then was going to show him around some of the Brown's Ranch ruins.
The McDowell Mountain Conservancy had a large group of stewards out (15-20) in the Browns Ranch ruin area. They were comparing old documents/surveys to the current ruins, documenting and recording what they found.

Next off to show Denny the Metates at Cathedral Rock and a stop by the Ampitheater.

An enjoyable morning catching up with my favorite Testudine. :y:

Bruce hooked me up with a local hike I could handle. A little less than half his normal outing. He even threw in an overcast morning and a Bobcat sighting. :y: I always like hiking in a boulder/cacti setting. Thanks Bruce. Good times!
