Beautiful day. Fifteen of us met up around 9am. We had all gotten our permits a month prior. The hike down to the falls went quickly, although I was carrying a cooler full of beverages, which got heavy in the last mile. The falls were excellent. The air temp was in the high 80s / low 90s in the sun. The water was chilly for a moment, but we quickly became acclimated. Only 2 of us went into the toilet bowl, while many others climbed over to it without going in. We explored the cave behind the falls, the cave downstream, and the swimming hole / cascades further downstream. Spent the day catching up, enjoying the clear blue-green water, and consuming the beverages. There were a lot of clouds rolling through, so the intense sun alternated with overcast skies and a few sprinkles throughout the day.

We made sure that everything was packed out, and I ended up with 2 extra tubes at the end of the day. The hike back up was a lot slower, especially with my injured Achilles tendon, but enjoyable (at least my cooler was empty.) It rained for about 10 minutes as we hiked out, which was a nice break from the sun. Saw at least 6 elk on the drive out. Had elk burgers at Sportsman's Chalet in Strawberry - just what we needed.

This is awesome as everyone says that it is. It was also every bit of a grind as everyone says. 🙂 It is a hike that you really need to do.

A couple key things. There are a lot of signs at the start of the trail saying how many rescues there have been, so I want to address that. This is a trail that you need to build up to. ~8.50 miles, 1,400+ elevation difference, rocky trail, and also, this key...uphill going out. I think that it's also easy to spend too much time by/in the water. The old damsite/falls are awesome but I think that it's a mistake to hike down with the intent of spending a couple of hours playing in or hanging out at the water. Even if you are in good shape, you're going to be pushing your limits at times when headed out. There are plenty of other places in Rim Country to enjoy the water, ones where you're not looking at a 4 mile uphill hike when leaving.

The "toilet bowl" is another warning spot. That's right by the old dam/falls. Don't jump in it, a lot of people have drowned there. There's a sign posted for a reason.

There's a lot of interesting history there. Some of the old power plant foundations remain. I wish I had read up on the history before heading down there.

We hiked this trail yesterday for the first time. I cannot imagine doing it in the summer. What a killer uphill! The views were nice and of course fossil creek is amazing. It was neat to see the springs and the dam. There was still a bit of snow on the trail and a few muddy spots. The parking lot was packed, but it didn't feel overly crowded. A few people were swimming. It was a bit too cold for me. I'd like to swim into that cave though. Maybe I'll try the flume trail next time.

The clock is ticking on this one ladies and gents. The permit system starts back up again on April 1st.

Made my way to the TH with the dogs and @Abs02 who decided with my encouragement to join our friendly, helpful band of online outdoors enthusiasts after I showed her the detail of my Route Scout interface. We got a real late start and didn't make it to the trailhead until after noon. Interestingly, this trail has more signs than any other trail I have been on in my life. The government has decided that if you are going to kill yourself on this trail that you will know your fate in the clearest quantitative terms prior to travelling 10 feet down the trail and will be reminded at least 3-4 more times throughout your travels.

I had been down Fossil Creek on the Waterfall Trail side on New Year's day 2019 with my son but hadn't been back here in a long time. The trail had some patches of snow in the first mile or so at elevation, but even the muddy spots weren't that bad except for my lowrider dachshund getting a muddy belly. On that note, this trail is really a blast for dogs. Both Luna and Wrigley had an amazing time playing in the creek and racing around the shelves that define the creekside. They both were in amazement and got close to the waterfall at the dam area.

We saw 5 hikers and a couple going in with their backpacks to camp. The temps were absolutely perfect all day and if I could have woken up earlier we would have spent more time by the creek hanging out and watching the dogs play.

My son Rob and his wife Lindsy were in town for the holidays.

For our first hike we took advantage of the no permit period and headed to Fossil Creek. I had no idea what to expect crowd wise. It turned out great and we were actually able to enjoy lunch at the falls by ourselves for a 1/2 hour. We only passed a few groups on the day. A tad cold in the shade on the way down. The Cottonwoods were a week or so past their prime.

Beautiful but hot day at fossil creek. Love all the water. All permits were sold out for the day, so lots of people around. Took a nice swim in the pool by the dam waterfall. :) ❤️

Decided to check out another way into Fossil Springs (because what's the fun in going in the normal way?). Headed on the road towards Nash Point, then down the jeep road that ends up near Nash Pasture Tank. Jeep road connects all the way to the saddle.

Once at the saddle, it gets interesting. The trail is actually well-constructed, but badly overgrown, and stretches of it involve forcing your way through holly, manzanita, and when you're particularly unlucky, cats claw. Walking out onto Bob Bear trail is like hitting a super highway. Would be really difficult to find this route from the bottom if you don't know where to look.

Fossil Springs was nice as usual, and surprisingly not too many people. Soaked in the creek for 45 minutes ago, ate some blackberries, walked up on a coati...

The hike out was OK, increasing cloud cover made the exit much more pleasant than the way down. Back at the saddle, we went cross country to avoid losing the 50 feet or so in elevation back down to the tank, and stumbled on an actual trail that goes back up to the top of the ridge.

Good time, would use this as a way to access Fossil Springs again.

Six of us did a short overnight backpack into Fossil Creek and it was glorious. While camping is not allowed between April 1 and September 30, it is allowed all other times (no permit required). We got lucky with a fairly warm weekend in mid November (which was good because camp fires aren’t allowed at any time).

We were the only backpackers down there except for a trail maintenance crew that were diligently working on improvements to the lower half of the trail. We camped just a little beyond the first stream bed crossing, a few hundred feet from the raging springs that feed Fossil Creek. From the campsite, it was just a short 1 mile RT day hike to see the awesome Fossil Creek dam.

The hike in is a breeze as it’s all downhill and pretty gentle at that. Hiking out the 1500 vertical feet was a bit of a bear with full packs, but we still were able to cover the 4+ miles in about 2 hours. Keep in mind it was a cool November day. Your mileage may vary.

Overall, it was a nice, short overnighter into one of the most gorgeous creeks in Arizona. 4 stars.

the girls wanted to see fossil springs!

we checked out the spring first, then headed over to the dam. spent a good long while there. had lunch and took a bunch of pictures. i decided to go for it and jumped in. sierra was inspired and soon followed suit, so we took a bit longer to jump in a bunch of times and swim. it was cold but not horrible. the weather was absolutely perfect anyway. we had the place to ourselves the whole time

the girls were a little concerned about the hike out, but it turned out to be nothing. they were almost surprised when it was over.

just a wonderful day all around :y:

Listening to my legendary neighbors many epic old time stories, he told me about a metal ladder propped against a cliff wall he spotted with his binoculars, there was never any confirmation of living accommodations sighted but the information shared was enough to inspire a trip down into the belly of the beast.
Started on a peninsula of Nash Point and worked our way down the ridge making decent progress until hitting absolute relentless amounts of old growth manzanita and shrub live oak but this was expected so we powered through it to the next level.
I wanted to stay out of the side canyons and drainages as much as possible as I’m aware how nasty they can be out here but after completing the majority of the descent we took a small drainage the rest of the way that worked out as a great passageway which was also freshly used by a big bear.
We came directly into a nice mile stretch of upper Fossil that had solid clear flowing water and pools but other than that the majority of it was dry but did have plenty of intermittent pools to be found.
Never made it to our target area after considerable time attempting to visually confirm a site with binoculars but as with the last time down here there was plenty of evidence of ancient civilization habitation to be encountered.
It wasn’t planned originally but during our rough descent I decided instead of heading back out that way came we would just work our way downstream and then head out the superhighway trail which worked out perfectly, topped off with getting picked up at the trailhead by a friend.
Started around 9am and finished around 8pm with sore bodies and satisfied spirits. : rambo :

This was a twist on plan A that came about when Chums decided to join and suggest a tweak.
Ever since the @Outlander trip to Calf Pen Canyon 6 year ago, this area has been on my radar.

At just shy of 4 hours to get the 3.25 miles and -2000' to lunch at Calf Pen and Sandrock canyon, we did not set any land speed records for navigating this unnamed canyon, but there was no reason to. After discussions, we dubbed this Vine Canyon, for the many vines in the canyon. This canyon included numerous non technical down climbs, maple thickets, dramatic rock formations, PI, plenty of water and plenty of evidence of past illegal irrigation activity.

Leaving the Sandrock / Calf pen area, there was running water all the way to the Fossil Creek Dam area. Pretty slick rock areas and signs of an old trail tread in places. When we reached the intersection with the Mail Trail #84, the sign facing the direction we came from, read "Dead End"

We stopped in the Springs area of Fossil Springs and cooled off in the water. Next up was the old dam area. There was a small group enjoying the water. A bit downstream is the cave area that we decided to swim over an check out the inside of. Quite a cool little gem.

Making the retreat back to the truck, the temps were a tad warm on the climb out, but the breezes helped. On what I'm calling the unofficial Nash Pasture Trail, the climb gets steep in spots. I'm not sure on the history of this tread, but it is defiantly and old entryway into the springs area.

Good times in some new areas. I can tell this was a different type of hike, I'm sore in spots today, not normally sore after a hike.

Joe has been itching to visit Nash Point since it was renamed in 2005 for the winner of the NBA's MVP award that year. Finally, Bruce was able to draw up a route to hit this remote peak. And off we went!

Outlander didn't reply to my PM queries asking how challenging the route would be, but we decided to descend Vine Canyon anyway. It took us almost twice as long to descend as it had taken him to climb up it. Oh well. I spotted one of the bears he assured we would see, though I didn't get a photo as his butt ran down canyon ahead of us, so I'm told it doesn't count.

Sometime around 2pm and 20% of our planned mileage complete we decided to sit down and have lunch.

There was water along the entire hike from Vine to Calf Pen to Fossil and the springs when of course the flow increased significantly (There might have been less flow in Vine if the irrigation tubing had been diverting all of it, but alas, it was broken in several spots). A handful of bikinis, uh, I mean people, were lounging at the dam site, but for the most part the area was relatively quiet. After a few swims we headed up the main trail before turning off and making our way up the steep climb to Nash Point.

Joe decided he didn't care about Nash anymore (something about him being a soccer commentator now?), so we cut 45 minutes off the day and headed back to the truck.

Bruce was trying to lure us back to his cabin "for a drink", but all kinds of alarm bells went off and I was able to avert whatever that would have lead to!

Fun loop. Rugged terrain. A little bit warm on the climb out. Some poison ivy. Something that I was allergic to destroyed me for an hour or two. Otherwise great company and nice to cover some new terrain.

Bruce suggested a rare out-n-back. Chums spiced it up with an Outlander route which Bruce had on the back burner too. Heading in I wasn't yippee skippy excited about non-technical canyoneering what looked like mandatory pants terrain on satellite in June. On the same token you don't turn down opportunity, especially retracing Outlander.

Within a hundred yards I was glad I made the rare choice to wear pants as we worked through light manzanita. Tree cover heading down was a bonus. Obstacles most could navigate handily kept our pace to a crawl. We logged a good hour on a couple down climbs alone trying multiple approaches to get me down.

The canyon was a worthy ride with oohs and ahhs along the way.

2.75 miles down took most of the morning. Under a half mile of occasional bushwhacking later we lunched. Which was a sight to see in it's own. Imagine someone plowing through said foliage in shorts without one complaint. BiFrost can punch a hole through steel manzanita like no other layered head to toe ready to battle. Chums deserves a golf clap or slap on the noggin for the beach attire approach.

After lunch it was creek and faint trail travel over to social disneyland. Tweedle dum and tweedle dee went swimming over and over like they were robbed childhood while I simply relaxed and absorbed the creek atmosphere.

The hike up was a roaster but seemed reasonable knowing it was a good 15 degrees shy of really hot.

Enjoyed the hike. Glad it ended.

Fossil Springs trail on a Monday.. We had our permit for the "8 mile hike"... however, if you go to the waterfall/dam/toilet bowl, it's and extra mile or so. The springs were flowing and beautiful, but we spent all of our down time at the waterfall area. Since we arrived at the parking lot at 8:30am.. we were the first one's down here and had the place to ourselves, which was a treat. We were in the water and swimming a bit (temperature outside and in the water was perfect). On the way back to the lot we passed many people coming down for the day... have to guess they arrived at the lot around 1030/11.... mostly teenagers and young adults -- sorry we missed them at the falls.. they may have been daring enough to jump off of the dam.

Used the expressway to get down into the goods and headed up stream via the Mail Trail for awhile and then branched off from there.
Just as a began to roam, look up and around I thought how perfect of a canyon this would be for signs of the ancients and it wasn’t more than a few minutes after when I started to see sherds and worked stone everywhere.
Put my pack down and put some miles in looping up and down into the many side canyons and beautiful wide open flatlands that are covertly guarded by very harsh thickets of brush.
I attempted to follow the extremely vague and dare I even say the word “trail”
that continues upstream along the very old cowboy fence but after being only being able to take so much catsclaw and bushwhacking masochism I soon retreated back to the easier but still labor intensive boulder hop wading method.
I was under .89 miles to the confluence I’ve been so eager to get to but got sidetracked with all of the cool stuff along the way and realized I just need to backpack down here as it’s the only way to really enjoy and explore this massive wondrous canyon.
As I was heading back west I took yet another different rough ridge and bench overlooking the creek and caught a good enough sight to determine what I’m almost certain was the hind end of a lion.
I’ve seen many animals scamper away in the AZ widlerness but that rope like panther tail was very distinct and enough to get my to unholster my pistol for a little while.
All in all it was a ruggedly beautiful day with views and sights that were earned with a solid dose of sweat, grit and a dash of blood.

After hiking Parson's trail and eager for more river hikes I was told this hike didn't need a permit starting in October. Drove down with the pups and hiked into the beautiful red rock. It is so amazing seeing the geology of various regions and realizing how they all connect together.

Nice, easy hike down with lots of shade. Trail was well graded. Once we hit the river the pups loved it and enjoyed the water. Went to the left at the fork to check out the river and came out on top of the "toilet bowl". If I didn't have the dogs I would've loved to check it out more but it quickly ended in a rocky cliff and I didn't want them accidentally slipping in. But being on top of the waterfall was really cool. Had the place mostly to myself. Only a few other people there.

Doubled back and went to the right of the fork this time to check out the dam site and see the waterfall. Was absolutely beautiful to see and learned that this river was the fourth largest travertine system in the US. Missed all the leaves changing which I bet made for an epic hike, but I thoroughly enjoyed this trail!!

Need trail info? PM me.

Highly recommend doing the whole loop! The Fossil Creek Trail from Strawberry is really cool. I used to drive down Fossil Creek Rd years ago when there were no permits and only maybe a few other people down at the FC waterfall. That is definitely not the case anymore. :o I'm happy they closed the road though because the hike is waaaay better. Fossil Creak Trail goes down to the less populated springs and from there connects with the Flume Trail. The Flume Trail is cool because you can see down to the creek and all the smaller turquoise waterfalls along the way. There's no access to the creek from the Flume Trail and it's a pretty steep drop down pretty much the whole way. Caution about attempting the Flume Trail when it is warmer out because it is not shaded and no water access. The Flume Trail eventually drops down to FC waterfall where the hoards of people hang out. Seriously, it's a madhouse down there and looks MUCH different from 8-10 years ago which seems like somewhat of a short time for so much change. We hiked back up Fossil Creek Rd and see why it is closed now. It was always treacherous but there are whole chunks of road missing now. Also, at the turn near the top you can see a bunch of cars that didn't make the turn and went over the edge. Yikes! Pretty crazy to see. Oh and we also saw a bunch of coatis near the springs from the Fossil Creek Trail! Very cool! :)

We drove from Mesa, arrived at the TH at about 9:35am. It was the perfect day for a visit to Fossil Springs and then down to the waterfall and toilet bowl. We obtained our permit and parking pass ahead of time and there was a ranger at the very beginning of the road to check that all things were in order. I hadn't been down to Fossil Creek in several years - last time was in my car! The TH is only about 2 miles after leaving the pavement and there appears to be parking for about 20-25 vehicles. The trail is well marked. The only confusion was that all of the signs at the TH state that "this trail does not go to the waterfall". Well, we had hoped to go to both the spring and the waterfall so we just hoped for the best when we got down there. We descended in about an hour & half, trail is rocky in some places and so we were careful not to slip. We arrived at the bottom and the trail crosses the dry creek bed at one point, just look for a wooden sign hanging from a tree on the other side and you'll know where to go. Soon you get to a fork in the trail that is going down the north side of the creek bed - that sign points you to the spring. It is a short walk to the spring and it is worth seeing - there's a good flow of water coming right up from the ground - although when you get further down the creek you wonder how could that amount of water soon turn into much more water??!! We back-tracked from the Spring back to the trail and took the route that is marked by another trail sign that says "To Dam". From there, it is only about a half mile to the waterfall and toilet bowl. What a magnificent sight and location!! And, we had it all to ourselves which is amazing - not a soul there (although we encountered 5 hikers ascending while we were descending). We swam (water was cool, but not really take-your-breath-away cold) and relaxed for about an hour, then started back up. On the way up we passed 15 or so more people going down - one playing rather loud annoying music - glad we weren't going to be needing to share the serenity of the creek with that background music! We climbed steadily and made it out in about the same time it took to descend - an hour and a half. All the way up my daughter and I were commenting about how much we LOVE Arizona. We live in the best state!! A comment to all hikers and campers (if allowed) who've done this trail - thank you to all - it is so clean down there, I didn't see any trash. Pats on the back! :app:

A healthy flow by my standards - really kind of surprising given our state of drought, but so grateful!
