The last time we came here, we hiked through quite a bit of snow and were never quite sure if we made it to Hackberry Spring.

Not even close to any snow this time out, with the shockingly warm, dry winter we have had. At the trailhead, we were surprised to find a fresh, new sign with some information about the area. There was even a box for brochures, although it was empty. Up the wash we went, meandering about somewhat to check things out. This time we did make it to Hackberry Spring, but it was completely dry. The last bushwhack to the spring was just brutal, and not really worth it. We scaled up the limestone wall of the canyon to get back out rather than fight the hackberries for the return trip. This made for a fun climb with intriguing views into the next valley as a reward.

On the way out, I wandered over to check out some nice sitting rocks under a large pinyon - score! Not only a nice shady place to sit, but obsidian flakes. So a day of pictographs, petroglyphs, caves, agave roasting pits, historical trash, and other interesting diversions.
