After work jog. Did a lasso involving Flarlander starting from the 59th Ave. (west side) TH. Took Coachwhip over to the bridge and then CCW first on Arrowhead and then Flatlander. Used the crosswalk to connect to the Chuckwalla on the way back. Weather was great again! Surprised at the number of people on Arrowhead compared to the other trails. Encountered 19 hikers, 1 trail runner on that stretch alone compared to 2 for the rest of the trails.

1st trip
Took off for a hike this morning, bright and early (4:30am), to catch the sunrise at Thunderbird Conversation Park. It's close so why not. Armed with my Nikon Camera, hoping to get some great pictures, and water I started up Arrowhead Point H-2 at 5:20. Right about the time the sun should have been breaking over the horizon. But no such luck. This is my first time hiking in over a year and the day I decide to go, it's overcast until after 7. Oh well. I didn't let that stop me.

Arrowhead trail is always a good hike. It's rocky, lots of loose rock, but it's not something that should deter your enjoyment of the hike. The first elevation is a great workout for the legs. Lots of high steps with sturdy rocks. The trail was clean, I didn't see a lot of trash like I have in the past. After about 15 minutes of continuous upward climb the trail levels out some, well a slight incline but after the leg workout it feels flat. I got some good pictures from this spot. The second elevation part comes up to the top of the mountain where the flag flies and you can rest. The view isn't spectacular, houses upon more houses, but it still nice to be on top. Many people stop here and return down the same trail. I continued down the backside where the trail becomes more rocky. Lots of loose rock. You can slip easily if you're not paying attention. This will take you to the pedestrian bridge that crosses over 59th ave and connects to Coach Whip. This will put you at right about 2 miles.

I took Coach Whip to Cholla Loop and started up the second mountain of the day. It was fairly steady on the west side and doesn't get to incline until the north side (about a mile in). Then the upward climb begins. The trail cuts back South and you begin to climb, but this is actually an easier climb than Arrowhead. I enjoyed this part and took many more pictures. From here you reach the top and another flag. It felt good to see it flying in the breeze on Memorial Weekend. Down this way was again rocky and there are many switchbacks. Next time I might start this way to come up those switchback to see if the gain is any different.

Cholla loop ends pretty much back at the parking lot and my app had told me I walked 4.8 miles. To finish up I decided to take a lap around the Flatlander Trail H-1a near the parking lot. It was very nice, soft and sandy. By the time I reach my car I was at 6.1 miles.

Overall a great hike, the overcast was nice, better then the heat, and there was a breeze the entire time. I had a great morning.

Short, after jog. Extended the Flatlander a little bit by crossing at the stoplight and then taking the Zcoachwhip up to the bridge and then coming back down to connect to the Flatlander and completing the loop. This involved very little elevation gain, but added a mile to the loop. Nice to get back to back hikes in. Weather was nice snd the trails were crowded. Saw a few prairie dogs and some lizards.

Did a lasso starting from the west side of 59th ave. Took part of the Coachwhip to the bridge and then took the Arrowhead counterclockwise. Down the backside of Arrowhead and then right on the Flatlander. I made loop back to the Arrowhead juncture and then took the lower track back (Coachwhip) to the bridge and then back to the car. Pretty uneventful jog. No wildlife. Saw three pairs of hikers, but otherwise trails were empty. :M2C: For the record, these are the worst named/configured trails around. Almost every trail in the park lends itself to a natural loop and yet the Coachwhip weaves its way through all the other trails and mucks it all up. It makes doing a trip write up more complicated than it needs to be.

Started early today on the flatlander trail and a coyote whipped across the trail in front of me. Here I was looking for snakes and instead I get a surprise of a coyote! Headed to the Arrowhead Point trail (H-2) clockwise up the steps. Spent only a few minutes at the top by the flag and then headed downwards towards the pedestrian bridge. Instead of heading back to my car, I decided to take a left at the bridge and take the Coach Whip trail south around the mountain because I saw a sign about wildlife viewing blinds near the lake in Arrowhead Lakes from the trail. I was surprised at how much further it was to get there than what it looked like on a paper map and no GPS to tell me mileage. And, when I got to the viewing blinds area I was disappointed because it looks as though this area has been neglected and is not used very much. Actual side trails the viewing blind areas was hard to decipher and I was more concerned with being completely alone on this side of the mountain and trail and realizing this wasn't a looped trail. At first, I thought I would just take the trail down to the end point in the neighborhood and walk across 59th Ave. back to the park. But I was tired and the more I walked, the more it seemed I was getting even farther from 59th Ave. So I turned back around and hiked back up several switchbacks towards the pedestrian bridge. The good news is that it turned my typical 2 mile hike into a 4 mile + hike and a lot more switchbacks and climbs! According to runkeeper I burned 720 calories. So though I can't say I have a hankering to check out those viewing blinds again, it was a win for me anyway!

Well I hit the trail a little after 2pm and it was busy. There were people waiting for parking spaces. Well the trails here are not marked according to HAZ. I hike the Arrowhead Trail. It was marked as H2 so I just started hiking and figured I would find my way back to my car eventually. I really wasn't wowed by this hike and there must a have at least a hundred dogs out today. Rowdy never got of his leash today and at one point I got scared as some little kid ran up to Rowdy and grab him around his neck. Rowdy was startled a growl at him. His mother and I had a few words as Rowdy was on his leash. I am glad Rowdy didn't bite him but I feel the boys mom should be more responsible.
After that we finished our hike and I shared a couple of beers with Rowdy. Oh he loves IPA's.

Hiked/jogged this trail after work. Was really tired (sleepy tired) but once I got on the trail, the blood started pumping. Funny how that works. Did my "get back into shape" hike. Went counter clockwise. Started from the parking lot on west side of 59th. Crossed 59th via the bridge, then went up Arrowhead, which is fairly steep and then down the backside which is much more gradual and drawn out. From there, I made a right on the Flatlander and did a loop on it, bringing me back to the Arrowhead. Took the lower section of the Arrowhead back to the bridge and then back to the car. Weather was great, but surprisingly the trail was not crowded. Not much wildlife but I did run through a swarm of bees on the backside of the of the Arrowhead. I had several of the bees bounce off me but I made it through unscathed.

Hiked/jogged this along with H4-Arrowhead trail in an effort to get back into hiking condition. Weather was ideal and the park was fairly crowded.

This trip was before the Cholla trail existed but Coach Whip and Arrowhead were built. We went off trail up to 1686 and 1831 and then down to the road and up H2 and back down along H1 to the north end of the park where we started.
