March was a bust for hiking, I think I got a whopping 6 miles in for the month, terrible. The house painting is done so it's time to get back to a little hiking. Ginny and I did a local hike in Sabino Canyon. I have hiked this many times but was a first for Ginny. We hiked up Sabino Canyon Road and came back along the Phoneline Trail which is about 600 feet above the creek bottom. The hike was 8.5 miles total with about 1100 feet of elevation gain. A good starter hike to wake up the body after letting it go lazy for a month. Sabino Canyon had a light flow but no water across the bridges as it was last year.

We started at the Sabino Canyon overflow parking along Sabino Canyon road and took the .4 mile trail to the road. There is a fee for parking in this lot but the National park pass is accepted. The walk along the road was pleasant and not too many people on it. There was no water across the bridges but there is a moderate flow. The cottonwoods were in their spring green, saw a couple saguaros with blooms but they were in the minority. Very scant flower showing along the Phoneline Trail. The cactus look a little more hydrated than they did in January.

We took the Historic Sabino Canyon Trail #23A up to the Phoneline Trail. This Trail starts at a signed junction with the road just after crossing the last bridge, I believe #9. This trail is a short .7 miles and climbs about 600 feet. Great views of upper and lower Sabino Canyon and the ridge above that separates Sabino and Bear Canyon. Great views of Thimble Peak.

The Phoneline Trail is pretty much a level walk down canyon with a little elevation climb just prior to the link trail. Always a great trail to get a birds eye view of the canyon. Just before the link trail there is an enormous rock that fell from the cliffs above and upon reaching its resting place decided to split, the lower portion slid a little more downhill. Worth spending a little time exploring. I could not find an easy way to get to the lower portion but I'm sure there are some more energetic hikers that would be able to do that.

The Link trail was our route back to the creek bed. This trail is an easy down hill maybe a little more drawn out than it needs to be though, very long switchbacks. Probably easier to come up this trail and head down the Historic Sabino Trail #23A.

After work hike from Sabino overflow lot to Phone Line Link Trail to Phone Line Trail. Took a short break atop a huge flat boulder by the trail to admire my surroundings and watch the storm clouds roll in before heading back. Watched Mr and Mrs great horned owl exchange hoots and circle the cliffs above the creek. Beautiful evening.

After work hike from Sabino overflow lot to the top of Phone Line Link Trail. Watched the sunset for a bit before returning the same way. Sabino Creek looked perfect for a spring time wallow, but way too cold today. Did some owl-watching along the creek at dusk.

Be ready to literally dedicate the entire day to this 1. Woke 530 am, home 10 pm. I drove up from n phx. Completely worth it.

Once u get past 7 falls, u will find solitude. To your left u will be able to see the trails u just came from. When u get even further out, u will b surrounded by beauty.

The landscape will change and u will pass multiple junctions. All of which provide ample info. Great escape.

Did a hike in Sabino Canyon along Sabino Canyon Road and Return on the Phone line Trail. I parked in the Overflow lot north of the main parking area. The main parking area was closed so it left a lot of congestion along the road. I am not sure why they closed the main lot, they could of left it open even though the facilities are closed. The creek was running pretty full. all nine bridges required getting your feet wet mid way to the knees, higher if you run. Cottonwood trees were in their new green attire. Great day for this hike temperatures in the upper 50's low 60's. I've done this hike enough times that I was not expecting to be impressed but I was. The large rocks along the Phone line Trail that have come down from the cliffs above always seem to impress me though. There were lots of people along the road at least through the first 3 or 4 bridges then it thinned out. The Phone Line Trail had very few people on it. The trams were not running. There were a variety of wild flowers in bloom, some I know the name of others I don't.

Last minute change of plans, had planned a day down in the Santa Ritas going up Old Baldy to get ready for a GC trip in a few weeks. Looked at the weather and the forecast was for early morning thunderstorms. Glad I did, as I was driving out of my subdivision I could look across the valley and see the lightning over Wrightson.

Hit Bear Canyon to sort of explore and do a slow run with plans to hit Blackett's Ridge on the way back to get some AEG. Very swampy in the canyons today and ran all the way up to Big Bear Rock and turned at the one hour point. Then went down and caught the connector trail over to Phoneline. Cruised up Phoneline but once I turned off onto to Blackett's started to feel off. Got passed by a few people, which isn't typical so I stopped to catch my breath and decided to cut the day's festivities short. One of those days that I can feel the fatigue from the Valley Fever as an intermittent side effect (which my doc said is normal, I'll have good days and bad days for about a year was his prognosis). Was hoping to get out for 12 miles or so today, but not in humid conditions.

This is an outstanding hike, but involves significant class 3 rock scrambling at a few spots. Nothing technical. I've been to lots of high points in the Santa Catalinas but my group spent a lot of time at the top having lunch and looking at the gorgeous mountains, peaks, and valleys in every direction. One of the best out of Sabino Canyon, but not for everyone. Details are in the description, which covers only the off-trail portion.

A member of SACC wanted to find people to hike with during the weekdays, so I readily volunteered since I'm usually out by myself. He'd never done Blackett's before, so we hiked that, then ended up talking to this super nice older couple on top from Ouray (we had a lot to talk about!) for about an hour! Then we headed over on the Phoneline Trail to the Link down to the Creek trail to get a bit more in. He was a lot slower than I would've hiked, but it was nice to have company. :D

I had to get out of the house cuz it's too sad there right now after having to put one of my kitties to rest last night. :'( So this was my memorial hike/trail run for her.

First time on this trail. Good jogging trail after the initial incline. Like Nock says in his description, it's cool to look down hundreds of feet onto the tourists in the tram!

I went down the Phoneline link trail kind of by accident, but it gave me extra elevation, so who cares. :)

Not too crowded on the trail, and lots of shade. Prob a good one for summer mornings.

I felt wonky when I was getting ready to head out. And it got worse as I headed up the trail. At about .4 mile up Blacketts Ridge I had to stop and turn back. I got back home exhausted. I checked my blood pressure, which I hadn't done in a few weeks, and it was 92/60. That it explains why I've been feeling a little lethargic the last couple of weeks. Time to see the doctor and get the meds adjusted.

Met Niko and Jordan after work and the three of us headed east on Bear Canyon Trail. The three of us working in the cactus industry, we naturally stopped to admire plants and consulted the new Cactus & Succulents Of Arizona book that Niko had brought along. The pool at the first Sabino crossing was too enticing for me to pass up, so in I went. Unexpected thunderstorms were scattered over the Catalinas and Tucson, and we knew an amazing sunset would arrive soon. Above us, thunder rumbled down the mountainside from somewhere behind Blacketts Ridge. Sunset came in full glory as we neared the Phone Line/Phone Line Link junction and it was all we had hoped for. We dropped down to Sabino Creek on Phone Line Link in the growing dusk and all enjoyed a swim. Hooting Great Horned Owls and bellowing Canyon Tree Frogs kept us company as we hiked out along the road. Perfect evening!

I felt wonky from the time I got out of bed, but since I had a free morning, I was determined to hit the trail.
Late start. I had wanted to attempt Blackett's Ridge, but it's already hot and humid after last night's huge downpour. Where last week I motored up Phone Line, this week I'm struggling just to get to the Blackett's Ridge junction. :( A hiker at least 10 years older than me comes down off of Blackett's looking daisy fresh. :x I decide to at least put an effort into trying the trail; I'm able to get about 1/2 mile up the trail before I have to turn around. ](*,) I get back to the junction with Phone Line where I'm Googling for a 12 step program for outdoors addiction when a trail runner stops to tie his shoes - he's already been up and back on Phone Line and is now adding Blackett's to his workout. :oplz: Feeling somewhat better after resting, I headed up Phone Line a bit so at least I could record some respectable mileage. I did manage to get to Phone Line Link so I could complete a loop back the visitor center.

It was nice to see a lot of water in the creek. There were quite a few people headed up to enjoy the water.

Morning hike around this loop. This was the first time for me on the first half from the visitor center, up Phoneline, then down the Phoneline Link Trail. Impressive. I'm looking forward to completing Phoneline and going up Blackett's Ridge within the next couple of weeks.

Another one of those hikes you do when you just want to get out for a few hours on a nice scenic walk. You can pretty much make up your own loop trail but we chose Sabino Canyon Lake and Bluff trail to the road, then followed the road up along all the bridges. On the return we took the Phoneline link Trail to the Phoneline Trail and turned around. Returned down to Sabino Creek Trail and Dam Trail back to the starting Point. This was just after monsoons so the Sabino Creek was running nicely, not to full. The Phoneline trail offers good views of the canyon below and taking the Link trail is a good short way to get you there and offering a little workout as well. On the way back a nice walk along the creek on the Sabino Canyon Creek Trail with Sabino Lake and Dam along the way.
