My original plans fell through to hike another section of the BCT with the I-17 lane restrictions all weekend, so I decided to head up the MSPN preserve and hike the sections of the powerline roads that I had never done yet. got started about 6:15am from Pima-Dynamite, but it felt later with the sun already above the horizon and the lot pretty full.

Just as I was starting along the Powerline Road #1, Brian was running the other way finishing up his morning run. We stopped and chatted for a few minutes and then I was on my way. I took PL Road #1, Latigo, PL Road #2, Upper Ranch, Brown's Ranch Road, Malapais, PL Road #1 again, West Express, Rawhide Wash, and PLRoad #1 straight back to the trailhead.

Biggest sight to see was the nest on Malapais Trail. I think I've seen that there last year or 2 years before. Got a good view of the mama hawk feeding her babies breakfast. the trail goes right below the saguaro they've nested in. I didn't linger too close or too long, wondering how stressful that might be for them to have the traffic below close by.

While walking in the Rawhide Wash, I thought I saw a biker zipping by the other way along the Powerline Road #1, but then I realized it was too far away to see. I turned to look and saw that it was deer running full speed. No chance at all for a picture.

Got back right around 11am and called it a day. temperature was perfect all morning, didn't even drink half my Camelbak bladder.

Early morning start at 6:30am from Brown's Ranch TH in Scottsdale. Started on the main Brown's Ranch Road Trail through the desert to the summit spur trail. Took about 40-45 minutes to reach the summit on Brown's Mt. Last 0.2 mile is uphill and scrambly in spots but nothing horrible. Great views all around from the summit. Saw a few hikers and mountain bikers after I started but that thinned out once I got off the main trail. Only two couples on the spur summit trail.

From there I headed back to Powerline Road #2 and east to the 118th St. trail. South to Latigo Trail and back to the TH. No one on the powerline road, a scattered few on Latigo.

Took a brief break at the TH and then went out to part of the Cone Mountain Trail. Saw plenty of lizards and a roadrunner. A few cactus, creosote and palo verde in bloom. No other exciting critters.

I really like biking out of the pima/dynamite trailhead at brown's ranch. There has been some construction right there and pretty sure its a new trailhead facility. That's probably known by people, but I like to guess rather than looking it up. :) I'm not a huge fan of the overbuilt trailheads Scottsdale likes to build, but its a lot better than a Safeway showing up in that spot. Good ride as usual, but I wanted to report there is a huge new section of Axle grease which I use on the return to the trailhead and its awesome. I hope the trail building continues.

route; Latigo to alma school trailhead, then browns ranch road all the way around the back then west express down to axle grease.

This was not the outing we had planned so the route was created on the fly. We begun from Faesfield TH, started heading toward Granite Mtn, then turned and ended up going to browns ranch TH. I was able to convince my friend to head up Browns peak. We finally took a more conventional route back.

Saw many mtn bikers on these trails. They are manicured and fairly flat. Browns peak was the complete opposite and is where much of the EG came from.

Decided to knock off another trail in the MSPN. This time I was looking to do a loop involving the Latigo. I've done portions of this trail numerous times, but never the whole enchilada. Started from the Dynamite TH and briefly took the Powerline trail to reach the state of the Latigo. For the first .5 miles the Latigo is pretty wide (most likely an ATV track in an earlier incarnation), but after that it switches to a nice single track that twist and turns its way up toward the Brown Ranch TH. I say "up", because there is a very mild elevation gain as you work your way east.. (There is is a lot of up and down as you negotiate washes and hills, but overall more up). Really enjoyed the Latigo, especially after the Brown Ranch TH as I worked my way up through the hills in that area. From there I connected to the Whiskey Bottle trail taking it north and west. Another great single track trail. Not much elevation change on this section, but still a lot of twists and turns. Briefly hopped on to the Powerline so that I could take the Vaquero trail. Decent trail. A little more straight forward than many of the other trails in the preserve, but a great way to move east/west and avoid the Powerline trail. From Vaquero there was a seamless transition to the Wrangler trail. From Wrangler I connected to the Cone Mountain trail. Both Wrangler and Cone are also great options to move east/west. These guys have a little more elevation change because of washes and the slopes coming off of nearby mountains, but nothing serious. Great single tracks with the obligatory twists. Hopped on the Hackamore for a short stint to rejoin the Latigo. By this time I was running low on gas. Sadly my run turned into an intermittent walk/jog as I made my way back to the TH. Still I loved it! :D Seriously, one of the best places for biking and running. Weather was great! Trails were moderately busy, particularly the Latigo and Whiskey Bottle. Over all encountered 47 bikers, 10 hikers, 3 trail runners :) , 9 lizards (heard a bunch more that I never saw), 4 quail (small number, I usually see a lot more out there), 2 rabbits and 2 chipmunks.

FYI. The Dynamite TH is closing at Noon from May 3 thru the 22nd for APS work in the area.

Met up with SCA at Pima and Dynamite to do a hard core Black Diamond ride on the west side of MSPN this morning. Rode Latigo, Rock Tank, Dare A Sarah, Scorpion, Snake Eyes, Tarantula, Hackamore, Malpais, Axle Grease, and Hawksnest. The black diamond trails weren't all that challenging and the hard parts all had bypasses. Regardless, MSPN is definitely my favorite place to ride in the valley! With the smooth trails and easy climbs, you can just ride on and on. I did manage to ride over my first rattle snake this morning and it was a BIG one. I was flying across Rock Tank, came around a turn (there are many), there he/she (I didn't check) was. We were both very surprised, but I think I did manage to out scream the rattler. At least, that's what Carey claims :)

SCA joined me for a ride through the Western side of MSPN. Started at Pima and Dynamite trailhead, rode a bit of Latigo, took the Temporary Connected over to Axle Grease all the way to Browns Ranch road. From there we followed Hawknest all the way back to the power line and trailhead. Ran into a bunch of other bikers on the trails, some hikers and bikers on the power line. Easy fun mountain bike trails!

First mountain bike ride at MSPN. I've done hikes from Brown's Ranch and the eastern trail heads, but today I started at the conveniently located Pima and Dynamite trail head. Started on Latigo, over to Browns Ranch trail head and picked up Upper Ranch trail to Cone Mountain back to Upper Ranch with a short stint on Basalt Ridge and all the way back to Pima and Dynamite on Hawknest. Fantastic loop. Silky smooth trails and easy climbing grades. I am now spoiled! Just wish I didn't have to drive 60 miles to get there.

Radmila wanted to take the kids out for a hike before they head back to school this week. I noticed that there's a section on the east end of the Latigo Trail that I never hiked before. I thought that maybe it was recently built, but when we got there the sign for where it leads to looked pretty faded.

From the Brown's Ranch TH, we headed south to the Latigo Trail, and then took the unnamed spur trail that goes to the entrance gate, then got back on the Latigo. We did a loop of the Latigo, Whiskey Bottle, and Chuckwagon Trails. I've never done the Jane Rau Trail, so it was the perfect trail to do at the end to add a little bit of mileage. It's very well built and has the usual informative signs about the desert flora. Finished up just under 6 miles for the day. We got done very quickly, and I even felt like doing another mile or 3, but I didn't want to push it. The kids are ok once they get going, but the 6:30am wakeup calls in the winter don't thrill them very much.

With the Steeler debacle happening on Thursday night, Sunday was open for a nice hike with the family. A few new trails in the northern MSPN were recently published, and I never took them up there before, so this seemed liked the way to go. I decided on a circuit with the Cloudcrest and Tarantula Trails that was between 5 and 6 miles long.

I realized at the start I forgot to pack my camera and GPS, so I had to wing it using my phone as both. Not my preferred option, especially for the camera, but the habit of redundancy helps out.

We started out on the Upper Ranch Trail, then took the Cone Mountain Trail to the Cloudcrest Trail. Then a bit further east on the Hawknest Trail, then southbound on the West Express to the Tarantula Trail, then back to the trailhead on the Hackamore and Latigo Trails.

Saw more bikers than hikers during the hike, and one group of horse riders at the start of the Latigo. Temperature seemed to be a bit warmer at the very start then at the end, which was unusual. I think the breezes picked up later, contributing to that. Much more sun than yesterday, had to keep my hood up to prevent sunburn this time.

Hit Four Peaks for lunch on the way home, nice Sunday morning.

This short, .3 mile trail was added to the Fall 2018 Northern Preserve map. As it was very cool this morning for the dog, I took a longer route than necessary so I could get in a longer hike. Browns Ranch Trailhead-Latino-Hackamore-Cone Mtn-Upper Ranch-Basalt Ridge returning the same way. Basalt Ridge has enough elevation to provide nice views North and South. Always a treat to be on the West side of Cone Mtn with the beautiful granite it offers.

First hike back in AZ and with the heat I decided to head back up to the northern Scottsdale Pima-Dynamite TH and hike some more of the new unmapped trails up there. I mostly hiked the new trails along the Latigo Trail, zig zagging between Powerline Road #1 and Powerline Road #2. Saw a few bikers, most of them at the very start of the hike.

The heat wasn't really so bad, but I was done by 10am. Didn't see any hikers or much of anything else. It's surprising that hiking just a few of the new trails I discovered, I was quickly nearly up to 9 miles. I found a few more unmapped trails and would hike a few feet out and back to mark them with a spur on my GPS track, making it easy to find them when I go back to hike the rest of them again.
