With the Steeler debacle happening on Thursday night, Sunday was open for a nice hike with the family. A few new trails in the northern MSPN were recently published, and I never took them up there before, so this seemed liked the way to go. I decided on a circuit with the Cloudcrest and Tarantula Trails that was between 5 and 6 miles long.

I realized at the start I forgot to pack my camera and GPS, so I had to wing it using my phone as both. Not my preferred option, especially for the camera, but the habit of redundancy helps out.

We started out on the Upper Ranch Trail, then took the Cone Mountain Trail to the Cloudcrest Trail. Then a bit further east on the Hawknest Trail, then southbound on the West Express to the Tarantula Trail, then back to the trailhead on the Hackamore and Latigo Trails.

Saw more bikers than hikers during the hike, and one group of horse riders at the start of the Latigo. Temperature seemed to be a bit warmer at the very start then at the end, which was unusual. I think the breezes picked up later, contributing to that. Much more sun than yesterday, had to keep my hood up to prevent sunburn this time.

Hit Four Peaks for lunch on the way home, nice Sunday morning.

Got to the Pima-Dynamite TH about 6:20am and had to wait 10 minutes for the gate to open. Started out on the Powerline Road #1 Trail, then did a clockwise loop going northeast on the Hawknest Trail, then took the Basalt Ridge, Upper Ranch, Hackamore and Latigo Trails back. I had originally planned to do a figure 8 crossing over on one of the unmapped trails, but I forgot about that along my hike in. It would have added only another mile at the most.

Everything is very green right now, and the vegetation is also very high, with pretty big stalks at the base. Could be a lot of fuel come wildfire season. Lots of wildflowers out as well, many patches of poppies once the sun hits.

Mostly bikers out, and trail runners. Hikers don't seem to venture far from the trailheads. The hikers I saw were all within a couple miles of the Pima-Dynamite or the Brown's Ranch trailheads.

A girl hiking the other way along the Upper Ranch Trail had a black dog that she was letting wander up ahead of her and off trail. On the last mile of my hike, two bikers had him on a leash, riding slowly, asking everyone they passed if they lost a dog.

Finished before 11am, the majority of the miles today were trails I had never hiked before.

A beautiful and easy hike. Huge interesting boulders all around, and the plants are so varied and nicely spaced, I was starting to wonder if the city had planted them. On a beautiful Sunday afternoon it was quite busy with both hikers and mountain bikers, but still a nice quiet walk.

Met Larry at the trailhead at 9am. Started on Hackamore, and made a large clockwise loop towards Brown's Mountain. At the spur trail to the top, Larry decided to wait while I went up there real quick. I headed up, looked around for a minute, then headed back down to the main trail. On my way down, there was a bicyclist carrying his bike to the top, he said he was going to ride back down and said it's his favorite part of the trail. I half jokingly told him to wait until I was done and off that part of trail so as to avoid becoming a speed bump for him. We headed back to the trailhead, then threw in the Jane Rau Trail for good measure. Nice day, but it sure did warm up quickly.

Did this loop clockwise, following Booneman's official route: Passed Cone Mtn on the N, then continued N on the rough and lonesome Upper Ranch Tr with its numerous ravines and finally to the Mountain Tr and on up to the saddle of Brown's Mountain. At the saddle I did not go for the summit on the S nor the Scenic Overlook on the N. I had an hour before sunset, and I knew the camera would be busy shooting this beautiful, virgin land as the shadows began to stretch across it. I got disgusted with the gods of Four Peaks for keeping them optically tantalizing yet unlit. Can't have everything. Got back 10 minutes after a terrific sunset with only two other vehicles remaining in the parking lot. The lot was very busy earlier. If only I lived closer to Brown's Ranch than what is the actual 33 miles and close to an hour's drvie, I would be out here much more often. For desert scenery, I can think of only a couple places in Maricopa County that match this area.

Patches of Fiddle Neck and Phacelia mostly coming up Brown Mountain's NW slope. Also ran into two or three Blue Dick blooms. This area is still a week or two away from hitting peak wildflower season.

It was fine time turtle got a bit of elevation in his rehab diet.
We were treated to a bobcat siting on the way in. Denny about wet himself.

Overcast, misted a couple of times, a bit of a breeze, the weather was perfect.
We saw a couple of hikers and some mountain bikers enjoying the day.

I ran the Turtle up Brown's Mountain, then was going to show him around some of the Brown's Ranch ruins.
The McDowell Mountain Conservancy had a large group of stewards out (15-20) in the Browns Ranch ruin area. They were comparing old documents/surveys to the current ruins, documenting and recording what they found.

Next off to show Denny the Metates at Cathedral Rock and a stop by the Ampitheater.

An enjoyable morning catching up with my favorite Testudine. :y:

Used some free time this afternoon to knock off another 10 miles of the MSC All Trails Challenge, via mountain bike. Browns Ranch to Corral to Upper Ranch to Cone Mountain Loop to Hackamore. I left Hackamore to double back using Rustler, as there was no other way to mark Rustler off the list. Then I took the last segment of Cone Mountain, and repeated the route down Hackamore to the end.

Of these, Corral was easily the most fun, given the speeds my biking novice self could reach on its flat grade. Cone Mountain was a close second.

Rustler was both uphill and treacherous enough that I would enjoy hiking that in future rather than biking it again. I had to hop off the bike 3-4 times for the steep grade. At one spot, my attempting to bike it rather than walk across would have resulted in (a) certain comedy for anyone watching and (b) certain injuries for me. (Not something I've encountered with any other trail I've biked in MSP so far.)

Hackamore was a lot of fun. At the very end of Hackamore, there's a short trail not marked on HAZ called Sunset Vista Trail, leading to the parking lot. I'm not convinced it's worth the bother to add it. The official MSP map doesn't recognize it either.

I think I'm somewhere around 70 miles of the 133 ATC goal. Keeping track through HAZ and some ipad maps so I'll save the math for another day.

Wow! We headed out to MSP North to check out the white stuff :y: there was quite a bit on the flora and boulders but it was all gone by about noon. It was cold and fairly quiet perhaps the two were related? (30 at the start and 36 at the end)

Got to the TH around 10.30 today. Temps are in low 50s but there is a lot of wind. Hardly saw or heard any birds today. Fair number of people were on trails.
I pushed myself to do the hike. If I did not have annual mileage goal, I would have stayed home. Couldn't hike on Xmas day since my 15mo old car battery died :o . Had to make up for that today.

Well I started off with the plan of hiking Pinnacle Peak. I finally found a parking spot and My brother Arthur and I started to head up the trail With Rowdy in tow. We were stopped and told no dogs were allowed even on a leash.
So we headed to Browns Mountain Trailhead with no plans. We started hiking to Brown's Mountain and decided to include Cone Mountain and do a loop. The weather was perfect and the trails had a steady flow of hikers and bike rides and a course a few horses.
We did see a lot of birds out today very nice. As we finished we decided to get something to eat. So we stopped in at Juan Jaime's Taco and Tequila for tacos and beer. Well Rowdy got some chicken breast that was cook in a nice sauce and it must have been good because he eat it all.Oh ares was great to.

Wore my blue shirt as shadowing hike assist for a McDowell Sonoran Conservancy guided wellness hike. I brought Caroline (she signed the waiver form!) and she did great. Carried her own water and snacks. Good size hiking group.

If you want to know about upcoming guided bike rides, horse rides, or hikes -- check out the Instagram gallery for "mcdowellsonoranconservancy" or pick up a printed Activity Guide at the big trailheads or use the MSC website.

If God is reading this triplog: :sorrry: I am sorry that I keep skipping church to hike on Sundays. I do love you but my soul needs to be on a trail. I spend my Sunday morning trail time appreciating all that you have given us on this earth and reflecting on ways to better serve you in the upcoming week. :A1: Amen

Skipped church to get GPS route for this little loop. I'm not sure I can come back to this area on a weekend again until the summer. It is so crowded! Being used the way it was meant to be used, but it's a traffic jam on Brown's Ranch Road. Actually this Cone Mountain loop is much less crowded but there's no elevation gain if you're looking for that.

I would bring elementary school-aged kids on this trail - perfect length and easy to follow signs. Lots of little geology elements to point out along the way. Views of distant mountains all around. Can't wait to see the slope of Cone Mountain once brittle are in bloom. Going to be a sea of yellow!!

1st trip
wanted to check out brown's ranch trailhead in the mcdowell sonoran preserve - northern region
when johnr1 and i were climbing at little granite mountain last spring, we saw a crew working on some of the new trails
decided on brown's mountain loop and whatever else looked interesting
did the title loop, then a loop around cone mountain
was going to hit cholla mountain loop, but will save that for another day, combined with a little granite mountain loop
should have good tracks for the following trails:
brown's mountain
cone mountain
wrangler
chuckwagon
watershed
vaquero
the coolest place was the amphitheater just off cholla mountain loop
the least cool places were the powerline road and brown's ranch road - wide sandy washes
those can be avoided for the most part
the summit of brown's mountain was cool, too
overall a nice area that would be great for mountain biking and trail running - saw several people doing both
also good for getting some easy long miles and taking visitors out into the desert
several trails my mom would be comfortable on
very pleasant hiking
imagine it's pretty crowded on weekends
another nearby attraction = greasewood flats ;)
had fun exploring and it's definitely worth another hiking trip for the loops i missed
made me think seriously about getting a mountain bike
