I'll admit, I was motivated by some recent photos on on here of the water falls near fish creek hill. Figured there was enough recent rains this weekend to go check it out, plus it has been quit a while since I had been out that way. Headed out, enjoying the greenery around canyon lake and also the nice views of some snow capped 4 Peaks. Arrived at Tortilla flats to see the road closed by ADOT. Parked and went to talk to the guy, at first I thought they had closed it because of the water crossing at tortilla creek. After checking it out, the water level was not bad at all so we talked to the guy and he said it was closed due to a boulder, which he described as bigger than his truck. With no ETA on opening, we headed back home. I posted on social media and started getting messaged from people forwarding the ADOT twitter's notice on it. I guess I should check things ahead of time. :)

I haven't posted in awhile. I wanted to share a recent trip. This is a unique rare site above Fish Creek Hill that I had the privilege to photograph while driving back from Apache Lake. It rained cats and dogs for a full thirty minutes prior to taking this photo. It was like draining a bucket. The rain stopped shortly after I pulled up. All four of the Fish Creek Hill high cliff waterfalls were running at full blast. It was an amazing site to behold. It was just perfect timing. I'm an Arizona native and I've never been able to time the conditions right to see that. I've only heard about it. Spray and mist was actually blocking the road at one of the waterfalls. The culvert just couldn't handle the flow. Two large boulders fell onto the road about half way up the hill that nearly kept me from getting home. My full sized truck barely fit between them. I thought for sure that Fish Creek Hill was going to wash out. I didn't know it could handle so much rain. It's been years since I've experienced such a storm.

Somewhere in the middle of prom on Saturday night (don't judge! [-X ) and with the influence of some of the liquor I had smuggled in, I decided to get up at 4:30 and go for a scenic drive. I did the paved part in the dark and thoroughly enjoyed the Apache Trail in early morning light.

Saw a handful of cars along the way all headed east including only one-near collision with a boat-trailer. Didn't get caught behind another westbound car until reaching Goldfield, which is pretty much the best way to drive this road.

I knew it had been graded recently (thanks to Mr Squishy and Toonces driving his Saturn Ion) and sure enough, it was high-speed all the way. Never hit 70, but had it in the 60s a few times. :GB: :A1:

Hit the 100k rollover between Fish Creek and Canyon Lake. Nice milestone for a properly-used taco! :y:

Despite numerous stops and photos along the way, the trip between First Water and Campaign was 5 minutes less coming back on the Apache Trail than it had been on the paved highway eastbound portion, meaning I flipped the google maps estimate by more than half an hour. Of course the googs probably knows that most of the time you'll be driving behind somebody who thinks the speed limit is 25.

I was back in bed a little after 10, and woke up in time to catch the end of the Seattle game. Good Sunday! :)

Especially beautiful in a "green spring" such as 2008, this is one of the most scenic and dramatic drives to enjoy in Arizona in any season. :)
