Fantastic weather today so we decided to get in some mileage and skip the AEG. We started at the Apache Wash Trailhead at the Sonoran Preserve North. There are some owl nests we wanted to check on and also poke around on the east and west banks of Cave Creek to look for any signs of ancient Hohokam dwellings.

The recent rain had Apache Wash completely full but we were still able to get across in order to access the Esplanade Trail to head north. No dust was a nice bonus although we had to bushwhack around lots and lots of mud pit obstacles on the trail all day. No baby owls yet but two of the nests had mamas sitting on eggs. We'll have to check back to see the baby owlettes.

The basalt rocks in this area are shiny dark with desert varnish which should be perfect for petroglyphs but I've yet to see any this far south. We went north all the way to Carefree Highway before heading south on the east bank of the Creek. Beautiful cliffs on either side but they are much taller along this area. Suppose that's why it's called the Cliff Walk Trail. :-)

We ran across a "camp" for lack of a better term in the middle of nowhere. Sleeping bag, cartoon pillow, deodorant, razor, and a fresh bag of beef jerky. No tent or shelter but everything appeared as if we walked in on whoever and they were probably watching us checking out their stuff from the trees. That jerky sure looked good... :) .

As I did a "pause for a cause" I spied what looked like the remains of a multi room settlement off trail up on the plain or Esplanade above the creek. Sure enough, we found something pretty neat completely by accident. Judging by the amount of pottery still laying around, there's not been a lot of recent visits by my guess.

Pretty flat trail, but nice vistas abound. Snow still visible in the Bradshaw's, Four Peaks, Mt. Ord and the rest of the Mazzies. Great hike on a great day with the Mrs. :D

A nice and easy little hike. No other hikers out and just a few bike riders. We stopped a little more than usual just to kickback and enjoy the peacefulness of being just us, nice.

The goals for this hike was to finish off a small section of what I think is the Sidewinder Trail (about a half mile) that I never did in my hikes up here 3 years ago. I also wanted to hike up to where I had stopped last Memorial Day weekend when I hiked the Flume Trail in the Cave Creek Recreational Area without know how close I was to this trail system. Got both of those accomplished.

Most of the trails here are very flat, so I made pretty good time. The weather never got all that hot, but I was done before 11am. Saw some hikers at the beginning, but then the rest of the day saw mostly bikers. the last person I saw was at the northernmost end of the loop I did on my way back, just south of the Carefree Highway.

Nice to get some higher mileage in for a change and make better time doing it. the Cliff Walk Trail tends to have the best views because of the overlooks on the cliff, but there's not much else to see out here.

First time on this trail that crosses the large Cave Creek floodplain S of Carefree HW and N of Dove Valley Rd. Found mostly bikers traveling this route. One stopped to tell me on Cliff Walk Trail he'd seen a coyote a hundred yards or so behind me. Did not run into it or much else on the return that would cause interest. Some palo verdes blooming and a scraggly bunch of yellow flowers on buckhorn. That was about it. Think you can find a lot more beguiling trails even if you're just out for exercise.

It was a perfect day for a hike so we checked up on the owl nests for the season. I'm happy to report one nest with 3 hatchlings and another with at least 2. Some flora but mostly Globe Chamomile so its pretty stinky.

Last hike of the Monsoon Season. I was a really nice afternoon for a hike. We never seen anyone one the trails and the cloud cover and breeze were most welcome.
During the first six miles of the hike I drank 1 liter of water and Rowdy drank two. The last four miles neither one of us drank water until we were back at the trailhead.
My ankle was really bother me since my fall at Windgate in the McDowells. I fed Rowdy some smoke pepper sausage. I decide to take a double dose of Oxycodone and washed it down with a five hour energy and it worked well.
I was able to pickup my pace with less pain. And when things started really going good I ran into a really awesome sunset and it slowed me down and it kept getting better and better.
It really was a great way to end the Monsoon Season.

The first 5 1/4 miles was awesome as it was cloudy a sweet breeze and it sprinkled lightly and we really never got wet. We took a nice little break under the bridge and when we got up and started again it was clear skies.
It did not take long to warm up as there was really no shade for the next three miles and Rowdy needs his shade.
Tomorrows hike should be sweet as we head to the Mogollon Rim.

Met Larry this morning to hike over on his side of town. Started a little after 9:00 to perfect weather. Headed up Apache Wash, then on Esplanade. Got some pictures of the owl nests, that was neat to see. Then saw a rattler sunning itself alongside the trail. My reaction when I noticed it was less than composed, I shot sideways several feet, but at least no squealing. Returned on Cliff Walk, where we saw a large rattler on the trail, and then Badger Brawl back to the trailhead. Saw lots of bikers, no other hikers. Pleasant day, especially with the great weather.

Linda met me at my house from there we headed over to Apache Wash Trailhead. This was Linda's first time on this side of the preserve. The weather was really nice out today.
Once we started on the Apache Wash Loop I heard a Cardinal singing so we looked around and found it. As we got out to the Esplanade Trail it seemed like it got some much needed rain. Linda got to see the owls nest which she liked seeing. I did spot another bird sitting on a Saguaro that was pretty far from us. I really wasn't sure what it was until I uploaded it and realized it is a hawk.
As we traveled on the trail Linda got a surprised from a big Rattlesnake. We finally reach the bridge and went under it to the other side to check out the third owls nest. From here we jumped on the Cliff Walk Trail where we encounter another Rattlesnake which was larger than the first one. I was really hoping to get a better picture of it but wasn't able to convince Linda to grab its tail and pull it out.
Oh well it was really nice enjoyable hike and myself I love hiking after it rains as everything seems cleaner and I like the smell of rain.

Well I was glad to get this hike in today. I had another doctors appointment today and it took longer than I thought it would. I also had an 7pm appointment to see my granddaughter perform in the Wizard of Oz in Ahwatukee and it was great.
Anyway I started out on the Esplanade Trail and just started watching my time as I wanted to check out the Northside of Cave Creek Hwy. I had notice that Chris did some trails on the Northside but where he parked is posted no parking. As I hiked under the bridge and came out the other side I spotted my third Great Horned Owl Nest. I had just enough time to hike about a half mile out before I had to head back.
On my way back I did see a few signs that said trail but no name. And then I notice another sign to the left of me and checked it out and it read trail head parking. And really it looks like it has never been used so next week I'll have to check it out. I should be able to access Go John Trail from here and maybe make it a nice 10 mile hike or so without the $6.00 entrance fee.
All and all it was a really good hike with lots of cactus blooming. I just wish I had more time to explore.

Strung together a bunch of SPN trails to create a longer than normal workout. Swung back by the trailhead for lunch under the ramada, changed socks and shoes and took off again. Not much breeze, but intermittent cloud cover helped.

Saw two Western DBacks along the trails in the afternoon. The first was the largest and most polite -- a soft gentlemanly rattle at about 5 feet. The last one was smaller and far more agitated. Gave them both a wide enough berth and pressed on.

Nice day to be on the trails. Now off to soak the dogs. They are certainly tired.

Hit this trail after work as an in and out, starting from the Apache Wash TH. Took Apache to Badger to Cliff and then back the way I came. Nice trail to run on but the views are average compared to some other systems. And to be honest, the trails seem to be very much alike. Not much to differentiate the Apache Wash, Cliff Walker, Esplande and the Badger Brawl from each other. Little elevation and the views are the same from each trail. On the run, I went a little past the bridge at the end of Cliff Walker. There's actually a new...or at least, a redone trail there. If you go under the bridge and across the wash to the west you'll find a user a trail that will take you north to the Flume Trail, part of the Cave Creek Regional Park system. However, if you stay on the east side of the wash (after going under the bridge) there is now a gravel path that will take you off to the east. I don't recall seeing this trail a year ago when I was last in this area. There is a generic trail sign at the bridge underpass, but no name is given. I'm fairly certain this trail ties into the housing community east of the wash. Definitely worth a future visit. Saw 1 hiker and 7 solo bikers while out. Wildlife included chipmunks, lizards and one small snake.

Low temps and sunshine seemed to suggest a long, but not too strenuous, hike. Hit the eastern side of the Northern Sonoran Preserve for a convoluted meander. Not many folks on the trail today.

Got another early start just after 6:30am. The sky was just getting light enough that I didn’t need a headlamp, but I could still my shadow in the moonlight. Within an hour, the sun had hit the horizon and the entire landscape lighting was transformed. By that time, I was already over 2 miles in.

Saw a smoke plume early on and managed to get a not so great photo of it. After an hour or so, it was gone.
From the Apache Wash Trailhead, I took the Apache Wash Trail to the Badger Brawl Trail, then took the first connector trail north to the Esplanade Trail. From there, I did a Figure-8 loop of the Esplanade and Cliff Walk Trails up and back to the trailhead. At the north end, there is a junction with another trail that goes under the road and has a Cave Creek marker on it.

The best views were probably along the Cliff Walk Trail since you’re up higher and the sun is to your back looking to the west. The edges of the cliff are pretty crumbly so I didn’t want to get too close to check out the wash below.

Still a lot of green fuzz leftover on the ground from the rains 3 weeks ago, which gives a little more inviting look than the scorched earth in the summer. Finished up before 11am.

Yesterday I got a new pair of shoes so I wanted a fairly long but flat hike to help break them in. I started at the Apache Wash TH and followed the Sidewinder trail to the Apache Wash Loop trail, then went north on the west side of Apache Loop where I found a couple of geocaches, the second being near the north end of the east side of the loop. From there, I cut over to an old road and followed it to the Carefree Hwy. I followed the highway about 1.7 miles then dropped down to the Esplanade trail where I found another cache, then turned around and followed the Esplanade trail north to where it crosses Cave Creek wash. After that, I found a couple more caches before getting on the Cliff Walk trail and followed it south to the Power Lines, where I went east on the Cliff Walk/Badger Brawl Connector trail and found a couple more caches, the last being where the connector trail and Badger Brawl meet. I then followed the Badger Brawl trail to its end at the Apache Wash Loop trail and took that back to the Apache Wash trailhead.

It was a great day for a walk and it showed as there was a lot of people out, especially early on when I was on the Sidewinder trail.
