I wouldn't make a special trip for this one, but if you are in the area, It's worth a look.

As mentioned in the previous triplog, take the nice trail to the top, instead of the road.

There are now Carsonite markers showing the location of the trail.

Who doesn't want to check out an early 20th century Arizona Pyramid? After the hike, the pups and I stopped for lunch at a Florence city park.

I'm tempted to update the hike description for this one.

Yes, there's an old road that leads to the summit that most people hike.

But there's ALSO a beautifully constructed and maintained singletrack HIKING TRAIL that leads to the summit by swinging around the north side of the mountain. It's easily visible on satellite photos going back to at least 2010. Before that the resolution isn't clear enough to see if it was there or not. But it's a much nicer hike than the road!

So if you go here ever, take the trail. See my GPS track for help if you need it. There are no signs on site and since most people go the wrong way, that's the most worn route.

The dates don't make sense for this. Guy dies in 1902. Pyramid built 1907. His remains interred there in 1925. So 18 years the pyramid sat empty? :-k

Hikewise, I'd say this Poston guy gives 9L a run for his money. :)

On our way south to Tucson via HW 79 and other backroads to do Mount Wrightson, we turned W at paved Hunt Highway just N of Florence and followed the railroad tracks for 1.5 miles to the TH at an underpass on the right. A group of adults and teens rested in the tunnel's shade, having just returned from an excursion to the summit on a warm afternoon.

This is a drab hill with a matching "trail," the last part covered in porous black basalt and some white rock that could be a form of quartz. Charles Poston, the so-called Father of Arizona, is entombed up there in a modest pyramid of stone and cement. It took us 13 minutes to reach the top. You can cut the walking distance by driving a bit farther, first easing through the underpass, opening a gate and coming up to a barrier where the trail becomes rough. But why drive if you can walk?

There has to be only one reason Poston, who converted to Zoroastrianism on a trip to India, contemplated building a temple up there. Though only about 240' above the desert floor, this dark pimple is by far the highest point around and provides a panorama of the city of Florence on the SE, the expansive flatlands in every direction and the distant mountains, including the Superstitions 20 miles north.

Found a triangulation disc, "Poston 1935" and a corresponding reference mark close to the pyramid. Not much else. An abandoned building of unknown purpose sets off the NW corner. There is a slab on the pyramid with the date 1907, five years after Poston's death in Phoenix. Assume that is the date it was built. The trek is probably only worth it if you tote some Arizona history. Plenty of info online about Poston and his butte. Some of it may even be factual.

This hike has always looked interesting, but doesn't seem like it is worth the gas to drive there for such a short hike. So Denny and I rode our bikes.

There are nice views from the summit and the pyramid shaped tomb is interesting. Not sure what the little building was for. We did not go down and check it out, kinda trashy. Cool little hike. Thanks for joining me Denny. :)

John took me down to hike the Florence mountain also known as Poston's Butte. short and sweet. I read previous trip logs about bees but we had no issues with bees. Thanks for the snacks, John. :D

Was in the area for the Warrior Dash races and saw this mountain only a few blocks away. Parked right next to the railroad underpass and made my way towards the butte. Went through the gate and was immediately greeted by cows running by me very fast and then I saw some guys on horses who were herding them. As a guy who grew up in the suburbs of Connecticut this was very exciting for me. Got to the bottom of the mountain and began my climb up. Easy trail to follow. Some loose gravel at certain spots but it was an easy hike to the top. Once I reached the top I was not able to get close to the pyramid tomb. A giant hive of bees was currently setup there and seemed very angry. As I tried to get just a little closer to read what was on the tomb I was met with a buzzing around my head. A few bees were pissed at me. I ran like hell one of those suckers got stuck inside my shirt. It stung me in the back. As I was walking down the mountain now I met an old man with a cane who had just sprayed the tomb about an hour ago. That would explain the angry mass of bees at the top. Went back to my car and got the stinger out of my back. Very short hike but a memorable one.

The hike is quite short taking maybe 15-20 minutes. There isn't really a sign showing were parking is or where to turn off. Once you see the mountain, which has a giant white "F" on it there should be a turn off somewhere on the road by railroad tracks. The place I found to turn off there was an underpass underneath the railroad tracks. There was a bee hive but I kept my windows up and was able to drive through without incident. The trail is will marked and easy to navigate. I toke a nine year old and a six year old with me without any trouble.

Beautiful crisp morning, started out early (6:00 am) spent 8 min to climb the hill, and 7 min to return. Add 5 min for walking to and from the gate to the hill.

Craving the opportunity to get out and move after a few days of sitting, I brought my beautiful baby girl Adell for another wonderful hike. We arrived to the rail road entrance at about 4 PM, and I let Adell roam around the flat roadway for about 40 min before loading her to my shoulders and huffing it up the hill. I believe it took about 20 minutes to get up maybe 30, and about half that to get back down. I've been to this trail a number of times and today was by far the busiest I have ever seen it. Their is no longer a gate to open and close.

Last minute decision to go out this morning. Easy trip up. Slightly harder coming down as I chose to descend the scree-covered south face. Afterward, I drove to nearby Adamsville cemetery, which is all that remains of this late-1800s farming town. Looks like someone may do occasional groundskeeping here. Photographed some of the more interesting headstones, chased a roadrunner and irritated the ground squirrels with my presence. Here's a couple of links if anyone is interested in old cemeteries:

Four times from the start of the gravel. I didn't time the first, second was 4m 50 secs to top (jogged as much as I could), third was 6m 10s and fourth was 5m 45s. Nice way to top off the leg workout from earlier and nice to see my cardio is improving... too much phlegm though! It is finally subsiding a bit now.

Good fitness hike if you go at a fast pace/jog, albeit quite brief. Up three times from the start of the climb. Mileage and AEG are estimated from the GPS route on the hike description page. This is only 8 minutes from my house, which makes it the closest place to hike for me. Too bad I only found out about it now as I am moving in a couple of weeks.
