Just the very earliest of the early so far, but the area promises to be good this year.

My family again signed up for a pre-stuffing 5K out near the Hoover Dam. This is always a fun event with a mix of serious and not-so-serious runners plus walkers, entire families, etc. As last year, my husband ran the 12K.

Walked the 5K this year with my mother. She enjoyed the longer distance and I enjoyed not running ;)

The trail was nice as always (smooth and flat), and was able to nicely accommodate all the people since it used to be a railroad bed.

This is a great family Thanksgiving tradition.

My niece, sister, and I again signed up for a pre-stuffing 5K out near the Hoover Dam. This was a fun event with a mix of serious and not-so-serious runners plus walkers, entire families, etc. We made almost all our holiday food a day ahead, since my husband wanted to participate too (he's the cook in our house), and he ran the 12K.

The three of us went one step further with our costumes this year - we wore homemade turkey-feather colored tutus to go with our matching turkey hats. :sl:
As I mentioned before, I never choose to run, but it did feel good to beat my time from last year by 1min, 30sec. :D

The trail was nice as always (smooth and flat), and was able to nicely accommodate all the people since it used to be a railroad bed. We also made our mom and dad participate in the 1 mi stroll again, and they enjoyed it.

This is definitely our new family Thanksgiving tradition.

Had a brisk cool morning to hike to the Dam. Good views to Lake Mead and informative signage along the way. Continued to scan the hillsides for sheep but saw none. A leisure lunch with the crowds at the Dam and a new hat for my Sweetheart from the gift shop made this a unique hiking experience. Still marvel at the ingenuity of the builders and all done without a computer. The sign stating "shortcut 12.5% Grade" as you near the end of the trail at the Dam only gets you closer to the Bridge view trail, We used the regular railroad trail end section to return and it includes some old machinerery to view.

This was hike #96 of the year. Took me awhile to get to the triplog as I was working on several videos.

After seeing Terry Fator -- wow, is his assistant/wife beautiful :o -- and visiting the Neon Museum and Mob Museum ( youtu.be/Q56rYd7KJbA ), and I swear not gambling a single penny, :A1: I stopped at the Lake Mead trailhead, just before the last casino, on my way out of Vegas. The trail is flat, wide and devoid of obstacles. The tunnels are kind of interesting, and there are dozens of educational signs along the way, but to me the really cool part was Hoover Dam itself. I'm sure I looked like a hobo, wandering around the dam with my pack, week old beard and Hat of Many Blood Stains. 8-[ I walked across to the Arizona side, then back. I did not take the tour, but I could have still spent a good extra hour looking at stuff, or just enjoying the scenery.

This would be a great hike for people who aren't hikers, like my wife, but otherwise you might be better off doing the out & back non-dam parts on a mountain or Dutch-type bike.

My niece, sister, and I signed up for a pre-stuffing 5K out near the Hoover Dam. This was a fun event with a mix of serious and not-so-serious runners plus walkers, entire families, etc. Some people were dressed according to the holiday - we wore matching turkey hats. There was a group dressed as chefs behind us, so we had to stay in front of them. :sl:
Personally, I never choose to run, so jogging the entire course was an accomplishment. :D

The trail was nice as always (smooth and flat), and was able to nicely accommodate all the people since it used to be a railroad bed. There was also a 12K option, which my niece is considering for next year. We made our mom and dad participate in the 1 mi stroll, and they enjoyed it. This may become a new family Thanksgiving tradition.

Hot, hot, hot stroll on the historic railroad trail. Started at the visitor center and made it just past the "Boneyard." Since we have seen the dam plenty of times, we decided to go off trail to get a better view of the lake. In the summer, I think this trail would be much more pleasant on a bike. Though the breeze in the tunnels was much appreciated. Bring plenty of water. There is a water fountain and restroom just after the 5th tunnel, but that water was boiling this time of year. I kept my eyes out for big horns, but didn't see them until we were back in the car. There were a half a dozen grazing on some grass along the River Mountain Loop bike trail near Big Horn Park.

Took a hike with three other hikers to just past the 5th tunnel and back. First hike of 2013! Goal of 500 miles this year and will hopefully maintain that for years to come.

Our car GPS took us to the parking lot of a casino hotel where we found another access to the trail. (The trailhead in the description was off the lake Mead recreation area turnoff.) We headed back after completing three tunnels since we wanted to visit historic Boulder City and it was getting late. Our Thanksgiving visit to Las Vegas was made special by this easy-for-all-family hike. This time of year you are in the shade of the hills on much of the walk so wear layers. We saw one big horned sheep! It's neat to look at this hike on google earth since you can see the tunnels.

First hike at Lake Mead. Very enjoyable hike. Good views of the lake and some good interpretive signs about the history of the railroad and the building of hoover dam. Walked all the way to the dam and hung out on the dam for a little bit before heading back to the trailhead.

Another easy hike with my parents to log, then I can get back to the more challenging stuff.
Reading the previous trip logs, I would note that this trail now sees heavy use by tourists and locals alike. It is very popular with families, dogs, and bikes. Regardless, the trail is wide, so you are still able to enjoy the views without tripping over anyone.
My parents and I arrived at the trailhead about 9 or 10am, and portions of the trail throughout the 5 tunnels were still partially shaded. In summer, if you went early, you could enjoy this shade. We, however, did not, and quickly became chilled. My solution is always to walk faster, so we did, which helped out. The trail is high enough over Lake Mead to enjoy great views, but wide enough that those afraid of heights (my mom) can also enjoy it. We strolled through the tunnels, past the Bureau of Rec storage yards, to where the trail meets up with and follows a construction/power line road. It was getting on to lunch time, so we didn't continue, but it looked like you can now connect to the walkway over the new bridge, with far-ranging views of Hoover Dam and Black Canyon.
A good location for a family stroll with a view, but watch out for the dog poop.

The Railraod Tunnel Tail is located at Lake Mead near the visitor's center. Lat:36.0118N lon:114.7935W The trail follows an old railroad bed that was built in the 1930's to haul materials and equipment for the construction of Hoover Dam. The trail passes through 5 very big tunnels. There are great views of Lake Mead along the trail and if it gets hot (as it did on April 21) the tunnels offer shade.
My wife and I stopped at the Hacienda Casino for breakfast and then took this nice easy walk.
From Arizona, take Hwy 93 past Hoover Dam about 4 miles and turn right at Lakeshore Drive. Just past the Lake Mead visitor center is the parking lot.

With bypass road work in the area this was actually the quickest way to see the dam. At various points I could see traffic stopped on the highway. The trail gets light use at this point but is sure to be a popular trail at some point.
