Awfully crowded trail for a weekday, but a botanical treasure trove of Bursera and unusual cacti and Agaves. Well worn trail gives way to a steep Thompson Peak-like paved service road. If you're a desert plant geek, this hike is a must!

This hike is in the Boots and Burgers book. There are spur trails and such. I followed the HAZ Track. The first mile or so is across the desert and some rolling hills. Not a lot of vegetation. Ocotillo looked healthy. After that you come to a gate, 2 Port-a-johns, and a trash can. You go around the gate and start climbing the cemented road to the towers. I talked to a local and he told me there was a register and 2 benches right before the top. The register is in an old phone box. He also said don't stop there as the views are better by the towers. I agree. I talked to another local on the way down and he hiked with me for 10 minutes or so. Some good conversing with a couple locals :) . That was half of the hikers I encountered :o . Slow day I guess but it was windy. This does look like the local exercise hike. It really does seem like a mini Thompson Peak in Phoenix/Fountain Hills.

The book suggest Lute's Casino for a burger. It's not a casino. It's a big ol restaurant in downtown Yuma. There is wall to wall Memorabilia in the place. They seem to do a good business. Their special was a burger/hot dog. Not real big, but tasty :D . :y:

To start with, I used HAZ Tracks to track my hike and it calculated the 4.8 miles round-trip and 1329 AEG (which were different from the "default" figures for this triplog). Just sayin...

Anyway, wow this is a cool hike! I had started it yesterday, then realized it was longer than I had thought and wouldn't make it to the top before sunset. I was guessing this was all about the views to the east, particularly the mountain ranges lit in the late afternoon sun, so I didn't see the point in finishing yesterday. I came back today a bit earlier.

The first 1.25 miles are pretty easy. I took the trail from the north end of the parking area that you access off of the dirt road, near the utility poles. It goes through a nice mini canyon, then climbs out on to a bench from which you have really nice views to the mountains on the south side of I-8 and the rest of the trail ahead of you. After you hit the concrete access road for the cell towers, WOW! That's some steep climbing! I swear there were quite a few sections at 45 degrees, no exaggeration. I have hiked the steep ones in Phoenix many times...Piestewa, Camelback, Siphon Draw...but they get into steps/stairways and climbing. This is just a really even, steep path and that's difficult. I reckon this was good training for McDowell Peak in Scottsdale, because I haven't done that and those descriptions all talk about how steep the road is there. Anyway, I digress.

The views WERE stunning from the utility towers! No one was up there so I just wandered a bit. One other hiker showed up and showed me the trail log, suggesting I sign in since it was my first time. I did, and added ""HikeArizona.COM"" after my signature :)

Then came the hike down. A hiking pole would have been nice...I think. I think my knees will be sore, it's really difficult to maintain that steep of a downhill for a full mile.

Regardless...it was worth it and a great hike. See my pics!

PS Joe B...I tried to type H A Z dot com above, because that's what I signed in the trail register, but you did something whereby that automatically changes to "HikeArizona.COM" when it saves a triplog here. I didn't write the full words in the trail register.

My once a week PT session. Love this hill. From the gate/sign to the top = 16:50.

Great Hike! My wife, two daughters and I girls made it to the top about 50 mins before sunset. My youngest daughter (6 y/o) did the whole trip unassisted (minus the stop for bandaging up a skinned knee).

Stopped in Yuma today to see a friend. She suggested this hike. I hadn't done it for about 3 years, so was glad to agree. We did not hike up the road all the way, but took the "goat trail." We hiked back down the road, however.

This hike is much more popular now than it was 5 or more years ago, the first time I did it. There were a lot of hikers out. And a very nice, warm day!

This hike felt much better. I was still a little sore from last week's climb, but for the most part I just took my time and kept moving. I made it to the top by taking one step for every 2 deep breaths. I'm still wearing a Heart Rate Monitor that beeps warnings at me all the way up, but I am determined to beat it and make it to the top without a stop...or a rest step. ;)

Today was my first time up Telegraph pass- it was definitely challenging. I can feel the soreness kicking in. My daughter (12 yrs old) and 2 of my friends climbed with me. It was really beautiful weather making for a nice hike.

Many lizards were seen today... and according to another hiker, we almost ran into a rattle snake.

The climb was very difficult for me today. My legs were still burning after Friday's climb. I made it to the top tough.
