Up Pyramid first in the hopes of seeing a nice sunrise, but not much happened.
Windy, especially on the National.
Wildflowers are still doing well.
Good day. :)

Kelly suggested a hike at lower elevation to avoid ice, snow, and mud.
Wildflowers really put on a show.
Stopped for a cup of coffee midway.
Fun day. Thanks Kelly. :)

Got started around 0915 and made my way over to Gila Trail. Light drizzle to start. Crossed paths with @johnlp and chatted with him for a few minutes. Continued west on Gila, where it started to get breezy at the saddle, so the umbrella got stashed for the rest of the hike.

Headed up Bursera to National, then east on National. Breezy and drizzly all the way to Goat Hill, where it finally became very windy. Shortly after that, heavier rain started and lasted for the next few miles. Uneventful descent down Pyramid, where the rain finally stopped just before I reached the bottom. The final mile on the flats was actually a little warm.

Perfect loop for a rainy day—the entire route has good footing, even on wet rocks, so the chances of slipping are minimal. Saw about eight hikers and three bikers. Great day, and a good start to the year.

Got out for a decent workout hike and even managed to start a little earlier than usual even though it’s a school day. Headed up Bursera, which seems to have had some recent trail “work”, if that’s what you want to call it. Mostly just breaking up rocks and scattering them on the trail.

East on National, side trip to Goat Hill. Saw one snake (patchnose?) just below Goat Hill. Passed six women, all wearing bright pink sun hats.

Headed down Pyramid, which surprisingly only had one other hiker on it. Warm by the finish, and rather sunny for a supposedly cloudy day.

We hiked the loop counterclockwise, starting up Pyramid. Clouds and a good breeze made for excellent hiking conditions. Didn't see too many other hikers. Good hike. Thanks Kelly. :)

Up Pyramid first in the hopes of seeing a nice sunrise, but there were too many clouds on the eastern horizon for a good one.
Cooler temps were nice. A few more people out than I normally see.
Went by a scary tan bellied something. :)

Wally met Kelly and I for a hike on South Mountain. We were hopeful of finding a speckled rattlesnake.
Cloudy skies and a breeze made hiking conditions excellent for an August day. We checked out a bunch of mines along the way. No snakes seen.
Good conversation. Fun hike. Thanks you two. :)

I took the chance to hike with John & Kelly. After slacking off for a few weeks a needed a push. They were nice enough to wait up a few times on the up hill. The weather was nice and it never really warmed up. South Mountain is about 4 to 7 miles farther than the Supes for me. The trails are nice. Thanks to John & Kelly for letting me hike with them.

Only 84 degrees this morning! Had a chat with Jeff from MN who I see on a regular basis. He was hiking the loop in the opposite direction second week in a row. A few more people on the trails than I have been seeing lately, but the parking lot was almost empty when I finished. The flora looks much better following some good rain a week ago. :)

Started very early on Bursera going clockwise. The humidity is increasing adding some cloud cover.
Cicadas are beginning to make their appearance. Of course one flew into me, bouncing off my neck. They have a terrible sense of direction. Also got stung by a bee, ambushed from behind.
Quite a few people ascending Pyramid as I was descending. Hopefully we will get some rain. :)

I was the first car in the lot a bit before first light. Hiked the loop clockwise beginning with Bursera. I dropped down off the National on Ruins, ascending again on Lost Ranch Mine. Naturally Goat Hill was the next destination. I then took Ranger down to Summit Rd and back up finishing via National/Pyramid.
Saw two owls and heard two others.
The first half of the hike was pre-dawn or shaded by the mountain which was nice. Got a little warm the last couple miles. :)

With high gas prices and nice temps forecasted we decided to keep it local today. Great loop hike with light traffic the entire time. Crossed paths with @johnlp on National, great to final meet you John :) Saw a small gopher snake coming down Pyramid. Great day on the trails.

Hiked the Pyramid/Bursera loop counterclockwise. Took Ranger down to Summit Rd and back and stopped by Goat Hill.
Ran into Hikerdw (Dave) and Ryan on the National trail! Great to finally meet them.
Jogged parts of the loop. Not many people out for a Saturday. :)

Got a late enough start at 6am that the early bird who had occupied the closest parking spot had left already, so I got a good spot right at the trailhead this time. :y: It felt pleasantly cool at the start that I decided to do the loop even though I was starting later than I originally intended. Headed up Bursera first because I like to end on Pyramid. Saw a few folks out on the trail, but it wasn't crowded at all. When I got to National I saw another hiker coming up behind me, and that motivated me to keep up the pace. He got closer and closer and was about to catch up to me when I got to the Goat Hill spur trail. Had some water and an energy bar on Goat Hill and adjusted my boots. I spent a good while on top because it was so nice with a cooling breeze and no flies this time! Last time I was up here the flies were extremely annoying. This time they didn't even bother to show up. :y:

The rest of the hike was good, but the breeze went away after getting off the Pyramid hill and into the flatland. It was already about 90° and rapidly warming, and I was grateful for the A/C in my car when I reached the lot.

The saguaros were starting to bloom. Also saw some teeny tiny baby lizards only about 2" long scampering across the trail.
