Another training hike at South Mountain, combining a couple of loops 2x each. First up was the title loop - up Pyramid, across National and around on Bursera. Then hit up Eliminator coming down Lost Ranch Mine before heading back to the TH for lunch. After lunch did the same two loops, doing the first clockwise for a different view. Was a little warm, but not too bad - will definitely have to head to higher country this Sunday. A lot of folks in the AM, not too many in the PM. I didn't bother doing the little section up to Goat Hill, so subtracted that from my estimated mileage/AEG.

Two more big trainers before the first of the two upcoming GC dayhikes.

Pyramid/Bursera loop with Ranger and Goat Hill thrown in. Temps in the 40's and cloudy to start. Didn't take long for the sun to come out. South Mountain got some decent rain from this front (I got a little over half an inch at my house). Signs of runoff on the trails and quite a few puddles still out there. Saw a few wildflowers but not as many as a couple weeks ago.
The air is very clear now. Views of the Estrellas showed a lot more detail than usual. Steam rising from Palo Verde easily visible. Great day for a hike. :)

One of my variations of the Bursera Pyramid loop. Unexpectedly cloudy, which was nice. Only real breeze was up on National. Saw five coyotes near the start. Not many people out today, but I did see Kelly & Fletch as I was finishing up, chatted with them for a few minutes. Starting to see some green out there.

Started hiking just before first light. Witnessed a coyote kill about a mile in. Heard a rush and a squeal nearby. Then a flurry of vicious activity. I couldn't see much in the low light. Thought it was a coyote chasing and catching a rabbit or maybe two javelinas fighting. Within a couple seconds two coyotes came flying in to the melee with more squeals, so I'm pretty sure there was a rabbit involved.
Only saw e few people once I got up on the National. Very busy going down Bursera back to the trailhead. Cars were lined up on Chandler Blvd almost to 17th Ave.
Saw Warren from work and his grown up puppy as they were going up Bursera. Beautiful day to get out and hike. :)

Nice loop of the western part of South Mountain that I haven't explored too much. Got to the TH a little before 6 AM and the lot was half full. Cool temps at 43 degrees. The old mines were a real highlight for me. Not a crazy amount of people for a Saturday. Wish I had time to explore a little more.

Up Pyramid, west on National, with a side trip to Goat Hill. Took National all the way west to hop on Gila at that saddle. Gila south, then east , up to the saddle at the connector. Took the connector up to Bursera, then west, down Bursera Canyon, then back to the trailhead on the unnamed lower Bursera trail. Saw one coyote, lots of squirrels, and not very many hikers. Warm, not much breeze, dirty air.

Variation of the big loop. Headed west on the still unnamed lower Bursera trail, then up Bursera Canyon. Went east on Bursera to the high point, then down the connector to the saddle on Gila. I noticed the Area Closed sign on the rest of the connector is gone, so I stayed on that all the way up to the top of the Ruins trail. The Area Closed sign at the top is gone now too. Both signs were there a week or two ago. I like the connector more than any of the three Lost trails. Once on National, I headed east to Goat Hill. I came down off the east side of Goat Hill to the mines and took the old trail back down to National.

Something about the area around the National/Ranger junction attracts a vortex of stupidity. Today, there were a bunch of coyotes howling on both sides of National—one pack was somewhere near the Max Delta mine, and the other pack was in the drainage between National & Pyramid—and there was an older couple just east of Ranger who did not know what was making all that noise. I said it was coyotes. They got all upset and said they shouldn’t be allowed out during the day. Huh??? I told them the park welcomes visitor feedback and suggested they find a ranger. Managed to keep a straight face too.

After that, I headed down Pyramid (which had lots of masked hikers) to finish out the loop, crossing paths with JJ along the way. More side trails have been blocked off with brush and rocks, but people seem to be moving that stuff out of the way. Pleasantly cool temps the entire way, but some clouds would be nice.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve hiked this full loop. Headed up Bursera first, then east on National. Quick stop on Goat Hill, then down Pyramid. Cool and breezy, with clouds for the first half. Very windy coming down Pyramid. Didn’t see many people, mostly on the first half of Bursera.

South Mountain roller coaster :y:

I took the loop in a clockwise direction. I've only done a variation of this loop once before, January 2017, in a CCW direction. Ascending the Bursera trail at the end of that hike wore me out, so I decided to get Bursera out of the way first. The slog up National seemed like it was never going to end, but what a great workout.

Goat Hill was next, then the hard part was over. A couple of miles zooming along the ridge was fun. After one last short ascent on National a quarter mile before the Pyramid trail, the rest of the hike is mostly downhill. By then, I was ready for downhill.

I crossed paths with @JuanJaimeiii at the top of Pyramid just as he was powering up the last few yards. Good to see you John!

The weather was cool when I started at 7:00am, a little warm at the end when I finished. Smoke and haze dominated the skies. My throat was getting raw towards the end and I was wheezy. Nevertheless, it was a great hike and a great workout.

My phone isn't tracking miles and elevation correctly, so I used the guide stats.

He soared into the wind next to me for my viewing pleasure. My Larabar turned into a chocolate mess. Had to lick the wrapper to clean off the melted chocolate. :)

Deserted trails compared to last Saturday. A low temperature of 90 degrees will do that I guess. Nightlife observed: gecko, great horned owl, bat, night hawks. Sweaty hike but not too hot. When I finished it was 97 degrees. :)

I postponed my regularly scheduled massage to take advantage of today’s cooler weather. I started up Telegraph around 7:45. I’m not a big fan of this trail, but it’s okay when nobody else is on it. Headed west on National then down Pyramid. Still a ghost town at that point. I took off my vest before heading up Bursera, as the breeze had died down. Bursera went by quickly, then I headed east at National. Took off the wool arm sleeves at the biggest climb on National, and started to wish I had worn shorts instead of pants. Quick side trip to Goat Hill, then back down National to Telegraph Pass. There was a woman just below the Eagle’s Nest who was frozen in fear about the ledges. I was confused, because the trail was a good 4-5’ wide right there, with nothing I would consider to be a big drop. Regardless, she did not feel the same way about things. I talked with her for a moment and she asked me to take her dogs back downhill so she could focus on getting herself back down. I grabbed their leashes and took them most of the way back down to Telegraph Pass while she followed. While we walked, I gave her a few suggestions of local trails she might like a little better during the two weeks she’ll be in town. After that, I tried to make up for the lost time the rest of the way back to the trailhead. A few more people on Telegraph at that point, but still pretty empty. Perfect temps today, and nice to get a slightly longer workout hike in.

Finally feeling good enough to hike again, but kept the pace pretty mellow. Up Bursera, with a side trip to the high point of 1956’. Lots of flowers (mustard?) at the west end of Bursera, with hundreds of bees all over them. Nice to see, but I hurried through that section. East on National, taking my time to get pictures of the mines. I noticed the first poppies just east of the Ranger junction. Pleasant hike down Pyramid. Warm, but breezy. Two weeks ago it was winter, today was spring—kind of sad about that. I’m hoping for some more winter storms in February.
