Decided to camp at Ashurst lake for the weekend, arriving around 11pm on Friday night. Friday night was a pleasant temperature with little wind.

After waking up Saturday, we took a ~8 mile off-trail hike from the campground to see nearby Indian Lake and Ducksnest Lake in a big loop. Although both lakes were dry, it was a nice hike. Stormy skies above the volcanic prairie with mountains around made for a beautiful and awesome backdrop. We were also lucky enough to see a herd of Antelope from a distance near Ducksnest Lake. Saturday evening was colder and quite a bit windier, but comfortable with a fire.

Sunday morning gave us a really nice surprise, with a layer of snow all around us. Waking up to the snow among the junipers next to the lake was great. After a muddy packing-up, we hit the road and drove back to Phoenix through Sedona. The rain and mist in the red rocks was a highlight of the drive home.

we headed up to ashurst lake on friday afternoon. we got our favorite spot (#1) at forked pine campground. it's amazing how much prices have risen there but they still don't have additional amenities. $18 per night and no flush toilets, solar lights in the bathroom, or showers, which you get at organ pipe cactus national monument for $16 per night. seems a ripoff... but, we do love vic, our camp host. and we love to fish here. we pay extra to walk just a few feet from our tent to the lake shore. we got rained on in the middle of the night on saturday night, and didn't have any real weather otherwise until we were on our way home. the water is so high this year, too. we caught four on saturday and three on sunday. but you should've seen the one that got away... it was soooo big - biggest i've ever seen outside the hatchery. it took my hook with it.

another hot one in the valley, and yet another reason to like phoenix: all of the glorious ways to get out of town. it is ALWAYS windy at ashurst lake - no exception. but we like it. we can camp within steps of fishing, and sometimes the fishing is good. and man the fishing was good! :y: we fished in the evening right before sundown, and then in the morning before 9. we caught four big ones (12-13.5 inches long) in the evening, and four in the morning before calling it quits since bobby didn't need any more fish he didn't want to clean/cook/eat. we headed up to flagstaff before heading back to the valley - had a couple of oh so yummy clear creek sandwiches.

ashurst lake is almost always windy, but we have luck there occasionally, so it's still on the list. besides, we like to camp at forked pine campground, where vic, the camp host, always remembers both of our names. we set up the tent and then it rained for a bit, so we sat in the truck and waited it out. the sun came out and the wind died down about an hour before sunset, so we walked out to go fishing. bobby caught three good sized trout and a pike (which we left out for the birds). i caught two small trout that we let live. it was hard to come in the fishing was so good, but the light was dying on us. in the morning, the wind had come back, but the fishing was still good. we caught one ample sized trout each, then the cold wind was telling us to pack up and head out. we had breakfast at the place in flagstaff, before heading down the road to montezuma well and montezuma castle on our way back to the phoenix area.

Spent the night in the (not yet officially open for the season) Forked Pine campground, then fished in the morning. Slow at first, then three bites quickly in succession and then two nice holdover rainbows (14" and 15") one right after the other. Slowed down again after that so we decided to move on towards Flagstaff.

part 3 of staying cool did just that. the wind died down around sundown - and then it started to cool down in a major way. i think the low was around 35 or so here. my main aim for the weekend was to get away from the valley, though, into the cooler climes. nice little lake. i was beginning to think that i was bad luck for southpawaz's fishing though, until he caught two large rainbow trout right in a row in the morning.
